"Jag vill inte sträckas ut" : En studie om översättning av Pippi Långstrump på kinesiska

This thesis uses the problems and strategies categorised by Mona Baker for non-equivalence in translations on word level. These theories are applied on a material made up of selected parts from the book “Boken om Pippi Långstrump” – Chang wazi Pipi《长袜子皮皮》– the source text by Astrid Lindgren (1952) in translation to Chinese by Li Zhiyi 李之义 (1983). The text is analysed through a close-read and examples are given of Bakers strategies for translation. Additional categories are identified in the text, developed by alumni of sinology at the department of linguistics at Uppsala University. In addition to these pre-exiting categories, an additional eight have been identified. The four problems were: the use of the nonsense genre, the use of semantic/pragmatic fouls, the use of sociolectic neologisms and difference in written language. The four identified strategies were: translating by a less neutral/more expressive word, translating by idiom, translation by paraphrase using a related pronunciation and translation by transliteration. These can be argued to be particularly common, for the specific cases of translations to Chinese, translation of children’s literature, and translation of the specific work.
