Wednesday: En modern Pippi Långstrump : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av TV-serien Wednesday

The aim of this study is to examine how the female character Wednesday Addams in the Netflix-series Wednesday is portrayed and if her character reproduces or breaks norms for femininity. Furthermore, the thesis examines which myths and stereotypes are being embodied through Wednesday. The thesis is structured through a case study design and uses semiotic analysis as a method. With the help of the semiotic tools denotation and connotation, 8 episodes of the Netflix-series were analyzed, looking at semiotic resources like attributes, posing, gaze and color. The study relies on a theoretical framework consisting of semiotics, gender theory and various theoretical concepts, such as myths, the gender contract, the performative gender, male gaze, respectability, heteronormativity and stereotypes. The result demonstrates that the Netflix-series Wednesday has made Wednesday's character visible through a femininity that is allowed to be both norm-breaking and normative. Wednesday shows that she is flexible in her representation as a woman. Instead of regarding Wednesdayas an opposite to the male, and what separates her from everyone else, one can argue that her character is questioning and problematizing how a woman should be.
