Les quartiers durables sont de plus en plus nombreux à voir le jour, dans un contexte de mise en question des principes de l'urbanisme appliqués en Europe depuis une quarantaine d'années. La thèse porte sur les processus d'aménagement de quartiers urbains durables, analysés en tant que processus de territorialisation du développement durable. L'hypothèse est que ces initiatives locales, si elles sont encore minoritaires, contribuent toutefois à un renouvellement de la réflexion urbanistique. Deux quartiers européens sont analysés, en observant plus particulièrement les articulations entre la qualité environnementale prônée dans ces quartiers et la réal ité sociale qui s 'y construit, de façon concomitante. A partir de cette analyse de terrains, la thèse s'interroge sur deux principaux aspects de cette articulation: d'une part, sur l'action des habitants sur leur environnement et, d'autre part, sur l'importance du local, des milieux de vie: comment cette question est-elle perçue en aménagement aujourd'hui? Cette importance du local serait-elle caractéristique d'un nouveau courant dans l'urbanisme? / Sustainable neighborhhods are increasingly numerous, are in a position to question the urban planning principles applied in Europe for sorne forty years now. This Thesis effort is about the planning process of sustainable urban neighborhoods, analyzed as a process ofterritorialisation of sustainable development. We propose the hypothesis that these local initiatives, even ifthey are still in the minority, contribute nonetheless to sorne fresh thinking about urban planning. Two European neighborhoods are analyzed, observing more precisely what connections there are between the environmental quality extolled in these neighborhoods and the social reality which takes shape there, in the same time and way. Based on the analysis ofthese areas the thesis wonder about the two principle aspects of this connection: on one hand, on the action of the inhabitants about their environment and, on the other hand, about the importance of place, of spaces for living: how is it perceived today in development planning? This importance of place, will it be characteristic of a new trend in urban planning?
