Ce travail vise à mettre en perspective la position du français dans le processus d’évolution démocratique de l’Afrique du Sud, dont l’histoire n’est pas liée à celle de la francophonie. Les perspectives du français changent avec les représentations qu’il engendre et donc avec les défis auxquels font face les enseignants du secondaire et les enseignants-chercheurs, sur qui l’innovation repose. Le français présente en effet de nombreux intérêts en tant que langue africaine pour le positionnement international de l’Afrique du Sud tout autant que pour contribuer à la renégociation du rapport à l’identité/ altérité en représentant une ouverture valorisée sur d’autres formes de pluralités. Ce travail amène notamment à questionner les manières de travailler avec les francophonies dites minoritaires. / This work aims at giving perspective to the position of French in the South-African democratic process, whose history is not linked to that of the francophone world. The outlook for French changes with perceptions of the language and, in turn, with the challenges faced by secondary school teachers and university researchers of French, on whom innovation depends. In fact, as an African language, French represents several points of interest for South Africa’s international position, as well as for its contribution to the renegotiation of identity/ otherness, given that French is perceived as a valued opening to other forms of plurality. This research leads ultimately to questioning the type of relations established with francophone situations labelled as being in the minority.
