A lo largo de sus doscientos años como repúblicas independientes, Chile y Argentina han emprendido guerras contra sus vecinos pero jamás se enfrentaron entre sí. Este dato
adquiere mayor relevancia si se tiene en cuenta que ambos Estados comparten una de las fronteras más extensas del mundo. Debe agregarse que a lo largo del siglo XIX y
XX existieron distintos proyectos tendientes a lograr un proceso de integración que recurrió a la metáfora de “cordillera abierta” como forma de expresar el espíritu que lo impulsaba. Resulta sugestivo entonces que los actuales procesos de cooperación
binacional se presenten a la opinión pública en términos de quiebre, como si constituyeran un cambio profundo dentro de una larga historia basada en desencuentros provocados por la disputa limítrofe. La presente tesis analiza las representaciones sobre Chile desde los inicios de la pretorización del Estado argentino, interpelando la imagen del “vecino expansionista” impuesta por las dictaduras y las corrientes nacionalistas. Con este objetivo se indaga la construcción discursiva sobre las relaciones argentino-chilenas que circularon en la prensa norpatagónica desde 1960 hasta 1984. La mirada desde la región complejiza dichos discursos debido a las particulares condiciones de producción y circulación que
le imprime una zona caracterizada por la afluencia permanente de migrantes chilenos, los tempranos y estrechos vínculos con la economía trasandina, y la sempiterna presencia del temor a una invasión, alimentado por las fantasías en torno a la débil argentinización de la Patagonia.
La investigación se centra en el diario Río Negro, medio que durante los años analizados adquirió una creciente influencia en la región. Fundado el 1 de mayo de 1912 por Fernando Emilio Rajneri, este periódico editado en la ciudad de General Roca constituye la única experiencia periodística en alcanzar una presencia centenaria en la región. Esta prédica antigua y cotidiana lo convierte en una referencia ineludible en el estudio de la prensa. / Throughout their two hundred years as independent republics, Chile and Argentina have
been at warfare against its neighbors but never faced each other. This data becomes relevant if one considers that both States share one of the longest borders in the world. In this sense, it is important to mention that all along the XIX and XX century there were different projects aimed to achieve a process of integration based on the metaphor of "open borders" as a way to express the spirit that drove it. Thus, it´s suggestive that the current processes of binational cooperation are presented to the public in terms of a
breakdown, as if they were a profound change within a long history of misunderstandings prompted by the border dispute issues.
This thesis analyzes the representations about Chile since the beginning of the militarization of the Argentine State, challenging the image of the "expansionist neighbor" imposed by dictatorships and nationalistic currents of thought. With this aim,
this essay explores the discursive construction of the relationship between Argentina and Chile that circulated in the Patagonian press from 1960 to 1984. The view from the region complicates these speeches because of the particular conditions of production
and circulation in an area characterized by permanent migration of Chileans, the early and close ties with the trans-Andean economy, and the everlasting fear of an invasion, powered by the fantasies around the weak “argentinization” of Patagonia. The research focuses on the Río Negro newspaper, a media that in the analyzed period acquired a growing influence in the region. Founded on May 1, 1912 by
Fernando Emilio Rajneri, this newspaper edited in General Roca city constitutes the only journalistic experience to reach a century-old presence in the region.
