Esta dissertação tem por objetivo organizar a discussão temática sobre a \"agricultura sustentável\", como tentativa de elucidar as implicações práticas e teóricas desta noção. Inicialmente, investiga-se como se consolidou a agricultura moderna e a chamada agricultura \"alternativa\". A seguir discuti-se a \"gênese\", as principais definições, as dúvidas e as contradições que cercam a expressão \"agricultura sustentável\". A pesquisa mostra que desde meados dos anos 80, a noção de sustentabilidade se estabelece como um novo \"paradigma\" da sociedade moderna e passa a concentrar o debate sobre a interface produção alimentar/meio ambiente. É fácil perceber que esta discussão indica uma insatisfação com o status quo, isto é com a chamada agricultura \"convencional\", e, ao mesmo tempo, o desejo de um novo padrão produtivo que garanta a segurança alimentar e a conservação dos recursos naturais. No entanto, não há um consenso estabelecido sobre o que se entende por agricultura sustentável. O que se tem hoje é um diálogo construtivo, envolvendo vasta gama de especialistas e de produtores, que certamente resultará em mudanças, mesmo que ocorram lentamente. Conclui-se que a agricultura sustentável é um anseio, ou objetivo, cujo prazo de realização é imprevisível. O mais importante é que já está em curso um processo de transição, no qual é possível identificar duas grandes limitações: o incipiente desenvolvimento da abordagem sistêmica sobre a produção agrícola e a timidez das pressões sociais pela salubridade dos alimentos e conservação dos recursos naturais. / The purpose of this work is to organize the thematic discussion about \"sustainable agriculture\" attempting to clarify practical and theoretical implications of this notion. The study first looks at how the modern and the so called \"alternative\" agriculture have been consolidated. Next, the \"genesis\" of sustainable agriculture; the most important definitions; the issues; and the contradictions that surround the expression \"sustainable agriculture\" are discussed. The research shows that since the mid 1980\'s, the notion of sustainability has become a new \"paradigm\" of modern society and concentrates its debate on the relationship between food production and the environment. Obviously, this debate reflects a dissatisfaction with the status quo, the \"conventional\" agriculture, and at the same time, the desire for a new productive pattern which can guarantee both food security and the conservation of natural resources. However, there is no established consensus about what sustainable agriculture really is. Currently, there is a constructive dialogue involving an immense range of specialists and farmers that will certainly result in changes, even if these changes occur slowly. The conclusion is that altough sustainable agriculture is an objetive, and the timeframe of its implementation is unknow. Most importantly, a process of transition has already begun, in which it is possible to identify two main limitations: the incipient development of a systemic approach to agrarian systems and the weakness of social pressure to demand the salubrity of food as well as conservation of natural resources.
