James Street: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"A knowledge of regional literature is important to librarians in the South both as an aid to selection and as a support for interpretation. Perhaps no one state in the Southeast has contributed more richly to recent Southern literature than has Mississippi, and among Mississippi writers of recent years, few have received more widespread recognition than James Street. Because of this and because the writer of this paper is a native Mississipian, James Street was chosen as the subject for a bio-bibliography"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Louis Shores, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

Edison Marshall: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this paper is to present the life of Edison Marshall, particularly those aspects which have direct bearing on the production of his novels, together with an annotated listing of his published novels. A listing of articles and short stories written by him will be included in an appendix. Since 'librarians have been forced increasingly into bibliographic activity' and, since the expressed 'purpose of the bio-bibliography is to present biographical and bibliographical material to library users,' this form has been selected as the best means of presentation of this study"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Sara K. Srygley, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 50-55).

Bio-bibliography of Marchette Chute

Unknown Date (has links)
"Brief articles about Marchette Chute, her life, and her writings have appeared at various times in the past few years, but in no one place could there be found any account that was extensive or complete. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to bring together information about the life of Miss Chute as well as information about books and articles she has written"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 45-55).

Rebecca West: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"The procedure followed in writing this paper has been to read and analyze these significant publications of Rebecca West and all available information concerning her life. Publications and their editions were identified in The United States Catalog, Cumulative Book Index, and the Library of Congress Catalogs. Bibliographic tools used in the search for biographical information include Essay and General Literature Index, Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, International Index to Periodical Literature, New York Times Index, and Biography Index"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 66-79).

Burke Davis: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"Because librarians need a more comprehensive knowledge of literature and its attendant influences, this writer has selected an author who he believes will test his professional skills in the utilization of the basic tools of librarianship and who will require intensive and extensive use of bibliographic sources. The procedure for this study has been to identify, read, and analyze all available material written by Burke Davis. Because of the few references to Mr. Davis in conventional biographical tools the predominant biographical material in this paper is from original sources. Correspondence with Mr. Davis and his wife assured this writer of their complete cooperation and assistance in making his study. Several extensive questionnaires, as well as a number of letters, secured information and facts unavailable from any other source. Mr. Davis was gracious enough to answer all queries with exceptional frankness, candor, and insight, and he has been freely quoted in this paper. The purpose of the paper is to provide a sketch of the life of Burke Davis, to survey the critical aspects of his writing to date, and to present a bibliography of his works"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1961." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Robert Clapp, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 38-41).

A bio-bibliography of Carl Jonas

Unknown Date (has links)
"Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and presently residing in Aspen, Colorado, Carl Jonas has located four of his five novels as well as his two published short stories in the Middle West. Mr. Jonas has written five novels published since 1945, when his first novel appeared. He has written book-length fiction exclusively since that time and it is as a novelist, somewhat regional, then, that we shall regard him. The purpose of this paper is to give a sketch of the life of Carl Jonas, to make a survey of the criticism of all of his writing to date, and to present a bibliography of those works"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 38-41).

Harry Hervey: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"In spite of Hervey's productiveness and his recognition as a popular author, biographical material about him is available only in scraps scattered through a variety of literature. The majority of his short stories written during the early years of his career are also elusive, since they appeared in current pulp magazines, which are not indexed. It is the purpose of the paper to assemble the available biographical and bibliographical material on Harry Hervey"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Ruth H. Rockwood, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

A bio-bibliography of Norman Mailer

Unknown Date (has links)
"Norman Mailer has often been criticized on the grounds implied above. His naturalistic style has evoked revulsion, his political beliefs ridicule and reproof, and the sensational quality of his material the accusation of dishonesty. Confronted by the writings themselves, and by Mailer's nonfiction essays on art and politics, such reactions appear irrelevant. To the greater understanding of the man, in both artistic and political roles, this paper is devoted"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "August, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Louis Shores, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

Rumer Godden: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"Quite aside from her books about India, Miss Godden has contributed notably in another area of great interest to American readers, that of childhood and adolescence. There is increasing consciousness of the importance of comprehending the inner life of children, so that adults may deal more sympathetically with their problems. Miss Godden writes with sensitivity and subtlety of the thoughts, emotions and values which children cannot express for themselves. For these reasons, Rumer Godden seemed to be an author well worth studying as a subject for a bio-bibliography. This choice was confirmed by checking the Standard Catalog for High School Libraries, the Standard Catalog for Public Libraries, the Fiction Catalog, and the Bookman's Manual which list a generous number of her works. The decision to do a bio-bibliography was made in order to obtain skill in bibliographic research as an essential tool for the librarian. The paper is limited to the books for adults and excludes the books written for children and stories and articles which have appeared in periodicals"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / Includes a glossy black and white photo of R. Godden (leaf [i]). / "January, 1961." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degrees of Master of Science." / Advisor: Agnes Gregory, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 72-84).

Munro Leaf: A bio-bibliography

Unknown Date (has links)
"In the field of humorous writing for children an outstanding author-illustrator is Munro Leaf. According to Hardy R. Finch, then Book Review Editor of Scholastic Teacher, Leaf is a 'writer for all children of all ages.' He was selected as the subject of this study because as a child the present writer, although a foreigner to this country, enjoyed the Munro Leaf books, especially The Story of Ferdinand. Yet of the many books Munro Leaf has written for children, Children's Catalog, an authoritative list of approved books, recommends only nine titles. This fact further encouraged this writer to investigate the works of Munro Leaf. This writer hopes that a bio-bibliography of Munro Leaf may prove of some value to others in addition to being an educational experience. He will examine the books for young children by Munro Leaf and summarize the criticism of these publications as found in book reviews in an attempt to evaluate his juvenile work"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.
