The hippocampus, retrograde amnesia, and memory deconsolidation

Epp, Jonathon, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2005 (has links)
There are numerous clinical and experimental accounts of retrograde and anterograde amnesia resulting from damage to the hippocampus (HPC). Several theories on the HPC hold that only certain types of recent memories should be affected by HPC damage. These theories do not accurately predict the circumstances within which memories are vulnerable to HPC damage. Here I show the HPC plays a role in the formation and storage of a wider range of memories than is posited in contemporary theories. I will demonstrate that an important factor in elciting retrograde amnesia is the number of similar learning episodes. Exposure to multiple problems in the same task context leads to retorgrade amnesia that is not observed when only one problem is learned under otherwise identical parameters. When multiple discriminations are learned, the output of the HPC blocks recall from and future use of the extra-HPC memory system. / x, 78 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.

Urban regeneration and sustainability : conflicting or mutually supportive agendas within contemporary cities : a case study of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Hannan, Sylvia. January 2012 (has links)
In the context of globalization and neo-liberal urban restructuring, cities have been attempting to reposition themselves within the competitive global landscape through focusing on their images and their enhancement since the 1970’s. Rebuilding the city became the goal of urban policy through the process of urban regeneration, and large-scale, emblematic urban development projects or ‘mega-projects’ began to play a major role in this endeavour. However, in the current landscape of uncontained economic growth, social decline and ecological destruction, sustainability has become a critical concept, and the pursuit of a ‘sustainable city’ is a desirable goal. Urban policy consequently focuses on urban regeneration and sustainability as parallel agendas. This study focuses on the South African city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, where regeneration has become particularly evident in recent years, with the focus intensifying when the country was awarded the bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, sparking the planning and construction of a number of mega-projects. Simultaneously sustainability has gained greater focus, as the need to develop within environmental limits has been recognized. Three particular mega-projects within the city are investigated: the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Warwick Junction Mall, and the Point Development; in order to explore the relationship between the two dominant agendas of contemporary urban policy. This is achieved through the exploration of the urban policy and regeneration landscape of the city, and the particular role which mega-projects play. Subsequently, the three mega-projects are assessed in terms of sixteen sustainable city principles to determine the extent to which they incorporate sustainability, and thereby the extent to which sustainability is considered in the city’s urban regeneration. The research findings reveal that although sustainability is present in the policy and planning rhetoric of the city, the mega-projects and urban regeneration do not include these principles to any meaningful extent. It is therefore concluded that these two policy strands are currently conflicting agendas within the planning and development landscape of Durban. There is a consequent need for sustainability to be practically incorporated to a greater extent in order to ensure a sustainable future for the city. i / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2012.

South Africa’s Gini coefficient : causes, consequences and possible responses.

Harmse, Liana 11 October 2013 (has links)
South Africa is acknowledged as having the highest Gini coefficient in the world. The Gini coefficient is a measure of income inequality in a country. The eradication of all forms of inequality was probably the most important aspiration for people pre-democracy. After two decades of democracy, not only has the eradication of inequality not materialised, but inequality has worsened. The aim of the research is threefold. Firstly, to understand the origins and the ensuing reasons for inequality as it is experienced in South Africa in 2013 and secondly, to investigate what the effects of this inequality are on the lives of South Africans, socially, politically and economically. Lastly, the research aims to find what, if anything, South Africans can do to address the issue, in order to determine if the aspiration is indeed attainable. Qualitative exploratory research was conducted by interviewing 16 prominent South Africans with the requisite knowledge of the topic and experience in their respective fields. Semi-structured, in-depth face-to-face interviews were performed. Content and theme analysis were carried out on the transcripts, followed by the recording of the responses in logically ordered tables. The literature informed the interpretation of the results in the tables. The reasons for and causes of South Africa’s high Gini coefficient were identified, with the apartheid legacy and the present government’s governance style as the two greatest contributors. The effects of the high inequality in the South African context were considered far more detrimental to society, than to the politics and the economy of the country. The research yielded a number of actions that could be considered to reduce inequality, thereby improving the Gini coefficient. The two most important proposals were addressing the current poor education system and finding a solution for unemployment. / Dissertation (MBA)--Gordon Institute of Business Science, 2013 / mn2014 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted

Appreciating the present : Smith, Sutherland, Frye, and Pacey as historians of English-Canadian poetry

Kokotailo, Philip, 1955- January 1992 (has links)
This thesis argues that as historians of English-Canadian poetry, A. J. M. Smith, John Sutherland, Northrop Frye, and Desmond Pacey explicitly promote the value of past conflict reconciled into present harmony. They do so by claiming that such reconciliation marks the maturity of English-Canadian culture. This thesis also argues, however, that the interactive progression of their histories implicitly undermines this value. It does so because each critic appreciates a different group of poets for realizing their shared cultural ideal, thereby establishing contradictory representations of what they all claim to be the culmination of English-Canadian literary history. The thesis concludes that while their lingering sense of present cultural maturity should now be fully renounced, the value these critics place on reconciliation is well worth preserving and transforming.

Regulation of β2-integrins by signalling pathways and cytoplasmic interacting partners

Lek, Hwee San January 2015 (has links)
In the immune system, integrin-mediated adhesion is important for leukocyte trafficking, signalling, activation and effector functions, but how integrin-mediated adhesion is regulated in leukocytes is still incompletely understood. The main focus of this thesis was to investigate signalling pathways and mechanisms which regulate lymphocyte adhesion under flow conditions and integrin recycling and integrin-mediated phagocytosis in myeloid cells, respectively. Traditionally, cell adhesion assays have been carried out in static conditions using immobilized ligands. We have now developed shear flow assays to study integrin-mediated cell adhesion and signalling pathways involved in a physiologically-relevant manner. Integrin regulation in naïve T cells has been studied extensively in the past, and therefore the focus of this thesis was to investigate signalling pathways that regulate β2-integrins (particularly LFA-1, Lymphocyte Function-associated Antigen 1) in B cells and effector T cells. It was now shown that B cells do not require Protein Kinase C βeta or Protein Kinase D for integrin-mediated cell adhesion but inhibition of Phosphoinositide 3-kinase and Akt reduced chemokine-(Stromal cell-Derived Factor 1-) induced B cell adhesion to the LFA-1 integrin ligand ICAM-1 (Intracellular Adhesion Molecule 1) under shear stress. In contrast, integrin-mediated adhesion of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was not affected by Akt inhibition under shear flow conditions, indicating that adhesion in different lymphocyte subtypes is regulated by different signalling pathways. I show here that effector cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) have high LFA-1 integrin expression and display high spontaneous binding to ICAM-1 under static conditions. Unlike B cells, these cells were able to adhere to ICAM-1 under shear stress in the absence of chemokines. However, cytotoxic T lymphocyte adhesion to ICAM-1 under shear flow was dependent on calcium/calmodulin signalling and an intact actin cytoskeleton. β2-integrins in myeloid cells are continuously recycled and mediate both cell trafficking and phagocytosis of complement (iC3b)-coated particles, but how these processes are regulated remain incompletely understood. I show here that a triple threonine-motif in the β2-integrin cytoplasmic domain is important for in integrin-mediated adhesion in primary mouse macrophages and dendritic cells. This motif also prevents integrin lysosomal degradation in primary myeloid cells, and is required for integrin-mediated phagocytosis of iC3b-coated particles. I also show that an R77H substitution in the extracellular domain of the Mac-1 integrin, which is associated with the inflammatory disorder systemic lupus erythematosus, leads to impaired cell adhesion to ICAM-1 and iC3b as well as impaired phagocytosis. In conclusion, in this thesis I have successfully developed methods to investigate integrin-mediated adhesion in leukocytes. In addition, I have investigated signalling pathways and mechanisms involved in regulation of β2-integrin-mediated functions in primary lymphocytes and myeloid cells. These studies have led to an increased understanding of how integrins in immune cells are regulated both in the presence and absence of shear stress.
