Public bioethics & the reality of religious pluralism: coping with moral diversity in bioethical methodology

Durante, Christopher January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines the problems that religious and moral diversity raise in public bioethics, both in the historical development of the field and in our contemporary situation, and is an attempt to develop the foundations of a bioethical methodology that is able to adequately address the issues of pluralism without losing sight of the fact that bioethics emerged out of the need for shared moral guidelines and rigorous ethical analysis of novel medical technologies. It has been my intention to contribute new insights into the processes of bioethical inquiry, deliberation and policy formation through the development of a dialogical method of public ethics that is able to quest for consensus while simultaneously maintaining a respect for, and making possible the accommodation of, incommensurable moral and ontological differences amongst religious traditions and philosophical systems. The aim is to implement modes of deliberation that can adequately cope with the reality of pluralism and to help produce bioethical policies suited for our multicultural and religiously diverse society.

The interface of medicine, spirituality, and ethics : a case study of the McGill programs in whole person care

Prokopy, Jordan Julia-Anne. January 2008 (has links)
Academic and medical institutions are responding to rising critiques of mainstream, scientific medicine (biomedicine). One response is the establishment of centers and programs devoted to whole person care. I assess the response of the McGill Programs in Whole Person Care (WPC) to these critiques, particularly its incorporation of spirituality into medicine. Through textual hermeneutics, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with faculty members, I argue that WPC is constructing its own worldview and normative framework. It does this by selectively drawing from the religious traditions of ancient Greece, Buddhism, and Christianity, interpreting these selections in terms of Jungian psychology, and sometimes secularizing them. My aim is to better understand the theory and praxis of whole person care in McGill University's Faculty of Medicine as a case study but also the ethical issues it raises. I conclude by providing points of reflection for institutions wishing to incorporate these health ideas and practices into conventional medicine.

Preaching the Great War: Canadian Anglicans and the war sermon 1914-1918

Davidson, Melissa January 2013 (has links)
When the British declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, the Dominion of Canada, as part of the British Empire, was also at war. As an overwhelmingly Christian nation, Canada's mobilization included not only its manpower, industrial capacity, and agricultural wealth, but also its spiritual resources. This thesis focuses on views of the Great War offered by Canada's Anglican clerics from 1914 to 1918 through an analysis of sermons and other documents. Situated at a crucial junction between the religious and political life, clerical rhetoric about the war provides an invaluable tool for understanding how a people's religious and national identities shaped one another during this critical period. Rather than painting the conflict in stark terms of 'good and evil,' Canada's Anglican clerics appealed to theological ideas of repentance and righteousness. The clerics denounced national sins and called on Canadians to shoulder their responsibilities both as citizens of the Empire and as Christians. Identifying and negotiating the responsibilities of citizenship in the crucible of war were key elements in the clerical rhetoric, as they sought to construct and connect their overlapping identities as Anglicans, citizens of the Empire, and as Canadians.

Mawlānā Abū-L-Kalām Āzād’s concept of religion and religions according to his Tarjumānu-L-Qur’ān : a critique.

Hahn, Ernest Norman. January 1965 (has links)
After the death of Sri Jawaharlal Nehru, it was reported that the Secretary of the Congress Parliament Party suggested that Nehru's portrait be placed in the only vacant panel in the Central Hall of Parliament along side the eleven portraits which had already been installed. It is not coincidental that one of these eleven panels bears the portrait of a Muslim, and it is even less coincidental that this portrait is of Abū-L-Kalām Āzād. [...]

The leap of faith and heroic despair : a comparison of the philosophies of authentic existence, according to S. Kierkegaard and J.P. Sartre.

Carpenter, Peter A. January 1966 (has links)
The rise of Existentialism in the 20th century has engendered mixed reactions in the minds of most critical observers of the philosophical scene. Some have tended to dismiss it lightly as a passing phase, comparing it, for example, to the post-World War I cult of dadaism. They regarded it as a mere product of the times which was bound to pass away as times changed. [...]

The "cheap unseemly, and readily despised" one: a rhetorical understanding of Blandina's gendered performance in «The Martyrs of Lyons and Vienne»

Machabée, Stéphanie January 2013 (has links)
The Martyrs of Lyons and Vienne is a second-century Christian martyrology. Of the victims narrated in this letter, the female slave Blandina appears to have a prominent role. This thesis analyzes how the author uses Blandina as a rhetorical tool to communicate his concept of martyrdom to his audience. Each time she makes an appearance in the amphitheatre, an authoritative, gendered image is invoked by her performance. Each metamorphosis (athlete, Christ, and mother) embodies the necessary qualities that constitute the ideal martyr identity. Because Blandina exemplifies all three personas, she is constructed to be a 'super martyr.' Blandina's remarkable performance aims to change the audience's beliefs regarding the weakness of this female slave, or the potential weakness of any Christian body, in order to demonstrate that all Christians are capable and ought to embrace martyrdom.

[A] Study onf Intercalated Pericopae in the Gospel of Mark

Hardiman, Alan January 1978 (has links)
Five passages in the Gospel of Mark are examined in which two separable narratives are intertwined': 5:21-43, 6:7-32, 11:12-25, 14:1-11, and 14:54-72. Literary analysis demonstrates that Mark is responsible for these intercalations. As to his motives, further investigation shows that they cannot be satisfactorily attributed to topical, literary or stylistic factors. The thesis defended here is that theologica1 motive behind these intercalations; that is; that the evangelist repeatedly employs this device primari1y to make a theological point. The theological implications which Mark thus draws are then described. In brief, they are that in fulfilling God's will, Jesus must suffer and die; nevertheless, his vindication and exaltation are assured.

Saiva Siddhanta polemics: a translation and analysis of the Civanna Cittiyar-Parapakkam

Balasubramanian, Ranganathan January 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT This thesis is a Tamil to English translation of the first part of the Civañāṉa Cittiyār, called the Parapakkam composed by Aruṇanti Civācāriyār in the middle of the thirteenth century. The Parapakkam contains three hundred and one verses written in viruttam style; it is an amplification and illustration of the Civañāṉapōtam, the seminal and foundational work of Meykaṇṭatēvar, which became the catalyst in the formation of the Śaiva philosophical canon named after him—the Meykaṇṭa Cāttiraṅkaḷ. The Parapakkam is a review and criticism of fourteen systems of religious philosophy, including Jaina and Buddhist schools. The arguments of Aruṇanti are framed from the standpoint of Śaiva Siddhānta. The Cupakkam, which is not addressed in the thesis, is the second part of the Civañāṉa Cittiyār; it elaborates on the basic tenets of Śaiva Siddhānta philosophy. Besides providing the translation of the Parapakkam, the thesis analyzes the language and methods employed by Aruṇanti to establish the superiority of his school of Śaiva Siddhānta over the competing schools with reference to the development of Indian polemical philosophy.

Popular hermeneutics : a comparison of Roman Catholic and secular responses to sexual imagery in popular culture

Bramadat, Paul A. January 1992 (has links)
This thesis explores Roman Catholic and secular responses to sexual imagery in popular culture. The Catholic and socio-philosophical responses may be subdivided according to specific ideal types to elucidate the major ideological and ethical movements operative within these two hermeneutical traditions. I use the media luminary Madonna as a case study to illustrate the inadequacy of much that Catholic and secular cultural critics have written about religiously ambiguous and sexually provocative popular culture phenomena. Typically, secular critics neglect the religious implications of such phenomena, while Catholic critics overlook their ideological implications. I shall demonstrate both that hermeneutical exclusivity weakens the two major approaches and that only methodologies which take seriously both Catholic and secular insights are appropriate for analyzing this aspect of popular culture.
