Regional development planning : an analysis of the approach in Pictou County, Nova ScotiaCornejo, Daniel January 1975 (has links)
efforts to initiate and sustain broad-based development activity. The study showed that though a variety of studies were conducted, they were initiated by and conducted with the intimate involvement of Pictou County residents who had been and would continue to be affected by the decisions arrived at. The study further showed that Pictou County residents were fast learning through their involvement that so much of what would likely happen in Pictou County depended on the initiatives they would take. What was happening in Pictou County by virtue of the Development Opportunities Project was found to embrace quite closely the concepts which form the theory of social learning.
The study concluded by saying that while great care was necessary to rule out cause and effect relationships that may be spurious, the previous federal and provincial regional development planning efforts seemed to have had marginal influence on the economic well-being of residents in Nova Scotia regions and may have even hindered social and political development. On the other hand, evidence appeared to exist to suggest that social and political development was taking place as a result of the Development Opportunities Project. No hard data existed on the economic effects of the Project. Generally, however, this study suggested that regional development planning that strengthens the process of social learning within the region will have more fundamental and worthwhile effects than the more traditional approaches. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

A Method for the Analysis of Economic Polarization: Two Case Studies; Halifax-Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Quebec City, QuebecJozsa, John 09 1900 (has links)
A methodology is developed that describes the spatial-temporal trends of economic welfare levels in a region. The focus of the region is assumed to be a key city; that is, a growth pole. The methodology depicts the degree of economic polarization on the pole as time and distance change. Two case studies, Halifax-Dartmouth and its hinterland the Province of Nova Scotia and Quebec City with a hinterland 160 miles in diameter were used to test the methodology. For the 30 year period 1941-1971, the nature of economic growth in the pole cities and their hinterlands and the pole-hinterland growth relationship were determined. Some conclusions regarding the requirements for improved regional welfare levels are offered. The methodology proves itself to be sufficient for the description of spatial-temporal trends in regional welfare levels. These descriptions are suitable for use in preliminary policy formulations and subsequent preliminary plan evaluation. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

An Interprocessor Communication Link for Data MinicomputersBrett, Michael Edward 05 1900 (has links)

The ACTR (Asynchronous Communications Transmitter Receiver) is a serial data transfer link for the Data General ECLIPSE and NOVA minicomputer lines. The ACTR allows the interconnection of computers in the NOVA and ECLIPSE lines into a multiprocessor system by permitting blocks ot data to be transferred through the computers' program I/O tacitities. Such a small computer multiprocessor system is a powerful, high flexible alternative to a single large computer in many applications. The major application of the ACTR is in systems where the linked processors are either far remote from one another or where the system is so configured that a master/slave environment is practical.

This report will deal with the theory of Operation of the hardware as well as the software control of the ACTR. A method of handling the ACTR in a multi-tasking environment under the Data General operating systems, RDOS/RTOS, will also be developed.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)
