Detection and significance of blood in firearms used in contact gunshot wounds

Visser, Jo-Mari 09 May 2005 (has links)
Firearm fatalities in South Africa are responsible for a very large number of fatalities. For purposes of judicial administration, determination of manner of death, in particular, differentiating between homicidal, accidental and suicidal death, is one of the primary objectives in fatal shooting investigations. Determining the muzzle-target distance can assist in establishing the manner of death, since contact gunshot wounds are seldom seen in cases of homicidal or accidental death. It has been reported that muzzle-target distance can be confirmed by detection of blood back spatter on the inner and outer surfaces of the weapons. To determine whether this phenomenon was being used to assist the forensiometric analysis of fatalities, a study was undertaken whereby weapons used to inflict fatal contact gunshot wounds in victims presenting at the Pretoria MLL, were requested for biological analysis during the period June 2002 to June 2003. Of the 123 cases identified, only 30 firearms were delivered to the FSL for analysis. Blood was found on the inside of barrels in 70% of cases, and the outer surface in 40%. These figures do not correlate well with international studies. The very low retrieval rate of weapons for analysis precludes the use of an important forensiometric tool in medico-legal investigation of firearm related fatalities in Pretoria. The urgent need to develop adequate protocols with respect to police handling of weapons is hereby confirmed. / Dissertation (MSc(Medical Criminalistics))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Forensic Medicine / unrestricted

A public health approach to gun violence: evaluating strategies to improve intervention and public awareness

Spinrad, Michael 02 November 2017 (has links)
The United States is experiencing a significant public health problem in the form of gun violence. Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the US exhibits significantly higher rates of fatal and non-fatal firearm injuries than other wealthy, industrialized nations. Despite this issue, the debate on gun control is one of the most heated topics discussed across the political spectrum. The constitutional right to own and possess a firearm is defended fiercely by gun advocates that desire fewer restrictions. The content of this thesis provides a detailed overview on the history of gun control through the 20th and 21st century. Current evidence on four major classifications of gun violence: homicide, suicide, non-fatal firearm injuries, and mass shootings are then presented, followed by a brief of discussion of commonly perceived risk factors for gun violence. After the context of gun violence has been defined, the thesis explores several strategies and preventative measures found within the literature. The available data is limited by a lack of research on gun violence. Although inferring true efficacy was limited, based on the established knowledge of prevalence and risk factors for gun violence some conclusions could be made. The expansion of the national background check, along with updated definitions for exclusion criteria could provide the most immediate and far reaching reduction in gun violence. While it was difficult to prove other solutions as effective, good communication and raising awareness could increase implementations of strategies designed to limit gun violence. Well-constructed media campaigns and messages are proposed for raising awareness of the risk factors for gun violence and to promote the public’s interest in research and prevention.

Analysis of the Pass Cavallo shipwreck assemblage, Matagorda Bay, Texas

Borgens, Amy Anne 30 September 2004 (has links)
A survey conducted in February of 1998 located an anomaly originally believed to be the remains of L'Aimable. L'Aimable was one of four ships utilized by Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, for his voyage to colonize the Gulf Coast in 1684. The anomaly, a wrecked vessel with a heavy iron signature, was located outside the entrance to the historic pass into Matagorda Bay, Texas. Artifacts were extracted from the wreck site to aid in the identification of the vessel, which was subsequently determined to be more recent in origin. A preliminary examination of the artifacts indicates that the shipwreck dates to the first half of the 19th century. The survey recovered over two hundred artifacts. The assemblage of artifacts includes over 80 lead shot, over 40 examples of brass firearm furniture, over 15 firearm fragments, several pieces of copper sheathing, and iron bar stock. Almost two-thirds of the material is associated with small arms. The majority of the identifiable firearms are military arms of three patterns: the British Short Land Pattern, the British India Pattern, and the 1757 Spanish musket. Historical research has determined that these arms were circulating in Texas, New Orleans, and Mexico, as early as 1815. The British Pattern arms were both purchased for the Mexican army in the 1820s, and used by the British Infantry in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. The 1757 Spanish musket was used chiefly by Spanish expeditionary forces in North America in the late 18th century. Evidence garnered from the artifacts suggest that the firearms were shipboard cargo onboard a small, wood-hulled sailing vessel that wrecked between the years 1815 and 1845. Archival and historical research isolated nine wreck candidates for this period. Historical research and artifact analysis suggest the Hannah Elizabeth as the primary candidate for this wreck site. The Hannah Elizabeth was a small merchant schooner from New Orleans laden with a munitions cargo for Texas troops stationed at Goliad. The vessel wrecked at the entrance of the historic Pass Cavallo while evading capture from a Mexican brig-of-war in November of 1835.
