Studium vybraných parametrů lidské kůže v závislosti na aplikaci kosmetických prostředků / Bioengineering testing of the human skin and the use of cosmetic productsFreudlová, Michaela January 2008 (has links)
Kůže chrání organismus zejména proti vlivům mikroorganizmů a chemickým látkám.

Chemické a fyzikální transformace huminových kyselin / Chemical and Physical Transformations of Humic AcidsVlčková, Zoja January 2009 (has links)
Modifikace organickými kyselinami byla inspirována procesy podporujícími biologické funkce v rizosféře, t.j. kořenový systém vylučuje exudáty způsobující změny v supramolekulové struktuře okolní organické hmoty čímž zlepšuje její mobilitu a prostupnost buněčnými stěnami. Primární struktura huminových kyselin připravených v této práci byla zkoumána prostřednictvím elementární analýzy a spektrálních metod (13C CPMAS NMR, EPR a UV-VIS spektroskopie). Testovány byly dva různé protionty – draselný a amonný. Obě zvolené metody předúpravy lignitu prokázaly svůj potenciál produkovat huminové kyseliny s rozmanitými biologickými vlastnostmi, aplikovatelné v zemědělství, životním prostředí a potenciálně i ve farmakologii.

Hydratace huminových látek / Hydration of Humic SubstancesBursáková, Petra January 2011 (has links)

Simulations multi-échelles du comportement du carbone à l'interface zircone/eau : relâchement et spéciation / Multi-scale simulations of carbon behaviour at the zirconia/water interface : release and speciationPlantet, Paul-Emile, 16 April 2019 (has links)
In this study, we are interested in the release of carbon in CSD-C (Standard Package of Compacted Waste) by atomic simulation. Carbon 14 can reach the surface of zirconia through two mechanisms: pore diffusion and/or migration in porosities. Migration in porosities was modelled by migration on an anhydrous zirconia surface. The calculated diffusion coefficient is equal to 10⁻¹⁵ cm²/s at the study temperature of 50 °C. This represents a migration in the order of mm per 100 000 years (time scale considered). Interstitial migration was studied by jumps in the vicinity of the subsurface. The thickness of the subsurface corresponds to the 2 oxide layers (0.7 nm) for which the interaction energy of carbon is different from bulk. Carbon migration is preferred towards the surface in this area. We have also analyzed the hydration of the surface with water that could arrive in the storage site. A new configuration of the surface hydration monolayer is proposed whose temperature stability has been studied by molecular dynamics. The hydration monolayer remains unchanged in the presence of water. Mechanisms associated with speciation once the carbon is on the hydrated surface have been simulated. The basic conditions have been taken into account. The desorption of CO and CO₂ requires accessible activation energies of up to 0.40 eV. Desorption of CH₄ seems more difficult. Carbon could also be trapped on the surface.

Influence of Chemical and Physical Properties of Poorly-Ordered Silica on Reactivity and Rheology of Cementitious MaterialsJedadiah Floyd Burroughs (8065844) 02 December 2019 (has links)

Silica fume is a widely
used pozzolan in the concrete industry that has been shown to have numerous
benefits for concrete including improved mechanical properties, refined pore
structure, and densification of the interfacial transition zone between paste
and aggregates. Traditionally, silica
fume is used as a 5% to 10% replacement of cement; however, newer classes of
higher strength concretes use silica fume contents of 30% or greater. At these high silica fume contents, many
detrimental effects, such as poor workability and inconsistent strength
development, become much more prominent.

In order to understand
the fundamental reasons why high silica fume contents can have these
detrimental effects on concrete mixtures, eight commercially available silica
fumes were characterized for their physical and chemical properties. These included traditional properties such as
density, particle size, and surface area.
A non-traditional property, absorption capacity, was also determined. These properties or raw material
characteristics were then related to the hydration and rheological behavior of
pastes and concrete mixtures. Other
tests were performed including isothermal calorimetry, which showed that each
silica fume reacted differently than other silica fumes when exposed to the
same reactive environment. Traditional
hydration models for ordinary portland cement were expanded to include the
effects that silica fumes have on water consumption, volumes of hydration
products, and final degree of hydration.

As a result of this
research, it was determined necessary to account for the volume and surface
area of unhydrated cement and unreacted silica fume particles in water-starved
mixture proportions. An adjustment factor
was developed to more accurately apply the results from hydration
modeling. By combining the results from
hydration modeling with the surface area adjustments, an analytical model was
developed to determine the thickness of paste (hydration products and capillary
water) that surrounds all of the inert and unreacted particles in the system. This model, denoted as the “Paste Thickness
Model,” was shown to be a strong predictor of compressive strength
results. The results of this research
suggest that increasing the paste thickness decreases the expected compressive
strength of concretes at ages or states of hydration.

The rheological behavior
of cement pastes containing silica fume was studied using a rotational
rheometer. The Herschel-Bulkley model
was fit to the rheological data to characterize the rheological behavior. A multilinear model was developed to relate
the specific surface area of the silica fume, water content, and silica fume
content to the Herschel-Bulkley rate index.
The Herschel-Bulkley rate index is practically related to the ease at
which the paste mixes. This multilinear
model was shown to have strong predictive capability when used on randomly
generated paste compositions.

Additionally, an
analytical model was developed that defines a single parameter, idealized as
the thickness of water surrounding each particle in the cementitious system. This model, denoted as the “Water Thickness
Model,” incorporated the absorption capacity of silica fumes discovered during
the characterization phase of this study and was shown to correlate strongly
with the Herschel-Bulkley rate index.
The Water Thickness Model demonstrates how small changes in water
content can have a drastic effect on the rheology of low w/c or high silica
fume content pastes due to the combined effects of surface area and absorption. The effect of additional water on higher w/c
mixtures is significantly less.

Oily Molecule Hydration-shell: The Influence of Crowding, Electrolytes and Small MoleculesAria J Bredt (10573115) 07 May 2021 (has links)

Open questions remain on the influence of various conditions and ion behavior on the hydration-shell of oily molecules. My research uses Raman spectroscopy and Raman multivariate curve resolution to study the hydration-shell of oily molecules as tools to help answer some of these open questions.

More specifically, I present results on the effect of molecular crowding on the structure of water around various oily molecules, and report the effect of molecular crowding on hydrophobic crossover. These results are important, as crowding has the potential to influence several fields, such as biology and environmental sciences. This work shows that increasing molecular concentration results in oil-oil crowding, decreases the tetrahedrality of the water structure around the oily molecules, and subsequently, the crossover temperature.

In addition to studying the hydration-shell under crowded conditions, I also present work on ion affiliation for the hydration-shell of an oily molecule. Ion affiliation for oil/water interfaces has been an ongoing topic of research since the Hoffmeister experiments because of their effect on biological processes. This study focuses on hydroxide and its affiliation for tert-butyl alcohol in comparison to other electrolytes. These results show iodide is less repelled by the oil/water interface in comparison to hydroxide.

Finally, I present findings on the influence of hydrogen peroxide in comparison to other small molecules on the water structure of an oily molecule. Hydrogen peroxide has been shown to reach supercooled temperatures, which may be useful in future studies of liquid phase transitions or studies on solute behavior at supercooled conditions. It is found that hydrogen peroxide does not significantly influence the water structure around tert-butyl alcohol, while other small molecules display significant water structure changes.

All these projects aim to contribute results to heated debates, as well as share information for future experiments.
