Reservoir characterization, performance monitoring of waterflooding and development opportunities in Germania Spraberry Unit.

The Germania Unit is located in Midland County, 12 miles east of Midland, Texas and is part of the Spraberry Formation in the Midland Basin which is one of the largest known oil reservoirs in the world bearing between 8.9 billion barrels and 10.5 billion barrels of oil originally in place. The field is considered geologically complex since it comprises typically low porosity, low permeability fine sandstones, and siltstones that are interbedded with shaly non-reservoir rocks. Natural fractures existing over a regional area have long been known to dominate all aspects of performance in the Spraberry Trend Area. Two stages of depletion have taken place over 46 years of production: Primary production under solution gas drive and secondary recovery via water injection through two different injection patterns. The cumulative production and injection in Germania as of July 2003 were 3.24 million barrels and 3.44 million barrels respectively and the production level is 470 BOPD through 64 active wells with an average rate per well of 7.3 BOPD and average water cut of 60 percent. This performance is considered very low and along with the low amount of water injected, waterflood recovery has never been thoroughly understood. In this research, production and injection data were analyzed and integrated to optimize the reservoir management strategies for Germania Spraberry Unit. This study addresses reservoir characterization and monitoring of the waterflood project with the aim of proposing alternatives development, taking into account current and future conditions of the reservoir. Consequently, this project will be performed to provide a significant reservoir characterization in an uncharacterized area of Spraberry and evaluate the performance of the waterflooding to provide facts, information and knowledge to obtain the maximum economic recovery from this reservoir and finally understand waterflood management in Spraberry. Thus, this research describes the reservoir, and comprises the performance of the reservoir under waterflooding, and controlled surveillance to improve field performance. This research should serve as a guide for future work in reservoir simulation and reservoir management and can be used to evaluate various scenarios for additional development as well as to optimize the operating practices in the field. The results indicate that under the current conditions, a total of 1.410 million barrels of oil can be produced in the next 20 years through the 64 active wells and suggest that the unit can be successfully flooded with the current injection rate of 1600 BWPD and pattern consisting of 6 injection wells aligned about 36 degrees respect to the major fracture orientation. This incremental is based in both extrapolations and numerical simulation studies conducted in Spraberry.

In Analogie zu den Systemen für die KKW Saporoshje und Rovno wurden für die drei Blöcke des KKW Südukraine und für den ersten Block des KKW Chmelnitzky technische Systeme zur verbesserten betrieblichen Überwachung eingerichtet. Dazu werden der Aufsichtsbehörde vor Ort und im Krisenzentrum in Kiew einmal pro Minute für jeden Block bis zu 51 sicherheitsrelevante technologische und 16 radiologische Parameter zur Bewertung mittels moderner technischer Ausrüstungen online zur Verfügung gestellt. Die entwickelte Auswertesoftware gestattet die Darstellung der Bewertungsergebnisse in Form von Tabellen, Grafiken und Schemata. Außerdem ermöglicht ein Archivmodus Trendanalysen. Mit der Integration der für die geschützte Warte gelieferten Ausrüstungen in das am Standort des KKW Saporoshje betriebene Fernüberwachungssystem ist es nunmehr möglich, die wesentlichen sicherheitsrelevanten Parameter des gesamten Standortes auch bei außergewöhnlichen Ereignissen mit Hilfe moderner Technik zu erfassen und zu bewerten.

The system uses multiple sensors, including Hall-effect, anisotropic magnetoresistor, ultrasonic ranging, and vision. A user is alerted using a conventional cell phone network of the presence of the vehicle. The system is microcontroller based, uses photovoltaic power supply, and leverages commercial off the shelf components wherever feasible. The system detection algorithm was made adaptable, to minimize false alarms and missed detections.

To this end, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has created the Continuous Diagnostic and Mitigation (CDM) program [1] (also known as Continuous Monitoring, CM). It strives to establish a technology framework whereby agency federal government IT networks can be continuously monitored for threats and vulnerabilities, providing an analysis and correlation capability that will enable entities to better evaluate risk. It also defines a hierarchical dash-boarding capability that facilitates both aggregation and communication of each agency's network health status into abstracted levels of summary so the federal system as a whole can be better evaluate their IT security posture. Going forward, these technologies will dramatically impact all government agencies, the Department of Defense (DOD), and commercial entities.

The development of an automated system for on-line tool wear monitoring

An investigation has been completed to determine the feasibility of using vibration measurement to develop an online tool wear monitoring system.Conventionaltransducers and FFT signal analysers have been used as the starting point for data collection and analysis. Additional software has been developed in order to obtain additional and enhanced analysis using statistical data such as percentile analysis and 4th statistical moments. The signal analysers have been interfaced with an IBM compatible PC to allow efficient data collection and analysis. • The measurement of surface finish via the use of centre line average has been selected as the primary indicator of tool wear. An experimental programme has been completed which examines the relationship between vibration measurement and surface finish during turning operations. This has provided sufficient general rules and guidelines to enable the method to be extended to other processes. It also provides information from which commonly occurring faults such as looseness of the tool holder, changes in material properties and swarf presence in the toolholder can be identified. Tests have been completed using cast iron, ENS and EN3 steels. An expert system has been developed. It has been demonstrated that sufficient data can be collected during the setting-up stage or commissioning part of a machining process from which, using the expert system, reliable tool wear monitoring can be achieved for all subsequent tests. In addition to predicting'the surface for all stages of tool life, the system can identify common faults such as looseness of the toolholder, the presence of swarf in the toolholder and changes in material properties. This system has been evaluated in relation to the available data, the present expectation of quality assesment required from the machine operation and relative to available commercial monitors. The system offers significant improvements.

Sampling-based Program Execution Monitoring

For its high overall cost during product development, program debugging is an important aspect of system development. Debugging is a hard and complex activity, especially in time-sensitive systems which have limited resources and demanding timing constraints. System tracing is a frequently used technique for debugging embedded systems. A specific use of system tracing is to monitor and debug control-flow problems in programs. However, it is difficult to implement because of the potentially high overhead it might introduce to the system and the changes which can occur to the system behaviour due to tracing. To solve the above problems, in this work, we present a sampling-based approach to program execution monitoring which specifically helps developers trace the program execution in time-sensitive systems such as real-time applications. We build the system model and propose three theorems which determine the sampling period or the optimal in different scenarios. We also design seven heuristics and an instrumentation framework to extend the sampling period which can reduce the monitoring overhead and achieve an optimal tradeoff between accuracy and overhead introduced by instrumentation. Using this monitoring framework, we can use the information extracted through sampling to reconstruct the system state and execution paths to locate the deviation. Based on the statistically significant data, we also model the trend of the sampling period with the instrumentation steps. Based on the modelling results, we devise a scheme for predicting the number of markers we need to reach a certain sampling period. Last, we build a tool chain to instrument and monitoring the software system and further prove the soundness of our approach.
