Ecology, Economy and Ecotourism: Sustaining People and the Environment

Snow, Richard 01 May 1996 (has links)
Tourism is the world's largest industry. The fastest growing segment of the travel and tourist trade is ecotourism. The concept of sustainable development insists that humans cooperate with nature in the search for an ecological economy which can support present and future populations. Ecotourism attempts to attain this elusive goal by preserving ecosystems while generating revenue for local communities. In this study, the researcher examines the positive and negative effects of ecotourism on people, culture, and landscape. An analysis of tourism data seems to suggest that developing countries, which are popular ecotour destinations, are benefitting economically and ecologically from properly planned ecotourism.

Evaluation of Constructed Wetlands for the Waste Management of a Large Scale Swine Production Unit

Sutton, Robert 01 December 1996 (has links)
The effectiveness of using constructed wetlands to remove unwanted nutrients, increase dissolved oxygen while at the same time decreasing the biological oxygen demand, and to reduce the levels of the Fecal Coliform Bacteria from a swine operation was evaluated. The indicator of proper waste purification will be the result of testing for the following: ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, total suspended solids, dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, and Fecal Coliform Bacteria. The wetland was divided into nine connected cells that covered approximately 3.8 hectares. Material was loaded from an anaerobic holding lagoon on four separate occasions during the testing period. As the material passed through the wetland, the vegetation, water column, substrate, and microbial populations functioned as the purification factors in the wetlands. During the sampling period, water was collected from each cell and analyzed for results. The data indicated that the constructed wetlands were effective in the waste management at a large swine production unit. Ammonia nitrogen showed an acceptable decrease, allowing nitrogen to be freed or converted into nitrate nitrogen. Total phosphorus and dissolved solids showed an expected decrease. Total suspended solids showed an overall decrease from the upper cells to the lower cells; however, results fluctuated during the testing period. Dissolved oxygen and biological oxygen demand showed an almost perfect inverse relationship with dissolved oxygen increasing as biological oxygen demand decreased. The removal of Fecal Coliform Bacteria was the most impressive, with the majority of bacteria being removed in the upper cells.

Analysis of The Net Benefit form Doing Protection Measures of Nature Resources of Inshore Fishing in Taiwan, R.O.C.

Tsuey, Luo 31 August 2004 (has links)
Though it bears favorable natural environment, the development of Taiwan coastal fishery is blocked by many factors. Among which, the exhausted fishery resources stays at the top, resulting from the various pollution, over-fishing and illegal fishing etc.. In addition, subject to the WTO regulations, the fiercer competition facing fishing products is another factor. To improve this situation, the Fisheries Administration takes many measures, in order to protect the fishery resources, realize the sustained development and increase the income of fishermen. This research is to, by the method of policy analysis and the principle of the fisheries economics, discuss the protection measures on Taiwan coastal fishery resources in recent years. Taking the policy planning into consideration, other than restoring the cultivation and re-productivity of the fishery resources, the diverse development is also concerned. While the analysis of the fish output, production value, unit fishing effort and the income of the fishermen presents a well performance. This research is designed to discusses, with the method of cost-benefit-analysis, the executive benefits of the measures in 2000, 2001 and 2002, with the results showing the proportion of the profits to the cost over 1 and the net profits also speaking for the well performance. Suggestions: 1. The policies for the coastal fisheries should be pertinence of the concrete targets, in order to avoid the decrease in profits resulting form the conflict regulations. The harmony among regulations is important for realization of the diverse development. 2. More detailed statistics is necessary for objective assessment of the executive performance. 3. The results attained always lag the policy application, so that the timing and the durative of the execution cannot be neglected or all efforts may be in vain. And experts are necessary to supervise and assess if the running cost of the policy enforcement is regarded as the scale economy, and such performance should survive the changes in personnel and the decrease in outlay.

Unequal Error Protection on SLCCA Image Encoded Bit Stream

Li, Chien-Hao 30 June 2002 (has links)
In SLCCA , the location and magnitude of significant coefficients are specified by the so-called significance map and magnitude respectively . As we know significance map is susceptible , error will propagate when data was deteriorated . This paper address this critical problem and provide an novel approach . In the significance map , the importance of data is interlaced . And our approach is to re-organize the significant map according to encoded symbol¡¦s characteristic . In SLCCA , four symbols are used to encode : POS , NEG , ZERO , LINK . POS or NEG represents the sign of a significant coefficient . ZERO represents an insignificant coefficient . LINK marks the presence of a significance-link . Symbol LINK is more important than POS NEG ZERO . Because when error happen in symbol LINK , it will lead to propagation error . Re-organized data is protected by differRS code . More important data are allocated more parity symbols .
