Relationships between childhood victimization, self and world beliefs, and coping patterns in adult male undergraduatesHayes, Sean Michael January 1991 (has links)
In recent years, there has been an increased interest in broadening the study of sexual abuse to include male child victims and to investigating the well-being of male adults with a history of sexual abuse. The research is however primarily descriptive. This study applied a theoretical framework to the investigation of coping patterns amongst three groups of male undergraduate students (those with a history of childhood sexual abuse, those with a history of negative events other than sexual abuse, and those with a non-victimizing history) attending a large Canadian university and a large community college. One hundred and thirty-five male respondents (M age = 22.17 years) completed a survey regarding their self-worth, assumptions about the benevolence and meaningfulness of the world, degree of gender role stress, choice of coping strategies in interpersonal stressful situations, and history of negative childhood events. Thirteen respondents reported having been sexually abused as a child (9.63% of the total), 25 respondents reported
having experienced victimizing events other than sexual abuse (18.52%),
and 97 respondents reported no victimizing events (71.86%).
Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the
effect of the self and world assumptions, and gender role stress upon
the relationship between victim status and the use of coping strategies
in a interpersonal stressful situation. As hypothesized, there was a
significant linear relationship between the schema and gender role
stress scores, and the coping score, which accounted for 21% of the
variance. Distortion in schematic patterns and high gender role stress
distortion upon the relationship between victimization status and the use of maladaptive coping patterns, however did not arise. The findings contribute knowledge about the effect of undergraduate men's values and beliefs upon coping patterns. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Motivations for safe sex: How Fundamental Social Motives influence safe sex behaviorsJanuary 2020 (has links)
archives@tulane.edu / While sexual behavior is both a biological imperative and fundamental aspect of close relationships, engaging in it can lead to the development of negative health consequences. Three studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between social motivations, perceived susceptibility to infection and disease, disgust sensitivity, and various measures about condom use. Study 1 (N = 198) was utilized as an exploratory study to get a preliminary look at which motivations significantly predicted condom use behaviors and intentions. Based on the results of Study 1, for Study 2 (N = 328), affiliation, mate seeking, mate retention, and kin care motives were predicted to have the most robust effect on increased condom use and intentions. Results found affiliation to predict positive increases in condom use, perceived subjective norms, and intent, mate seeking to predict positive increases in condom use, and kin care to predict positive increases in intent to use condoms. No effects were found for mate retention. For Study 3 (N = 413), affiliation, mate seeking, and kin care were predicted to have the most robust effect on the condom use measures. Affiliation emerged as the strongest predictor; all three subscales of affiliation significantly predict changes in condom use behaviors, intentions, and perceived behavioral control. Contrary to the original prediction, affiliation independence did not predict the relationship in the expected direction. Dispositional variation in worry about disease did not predict any differences in condom use, which calls into question whether it plays a role in shaping sexual behavior. Limitations of the current studies and future directions for research regarding motivations on sexual behavior are considered. / 1 / Kyra R. Ness-Lanckriet

Attitudes of high school learners towards sexuality education in ZululandMyeza, Nonhlanhla Patience January 2008 (has links)
A dissertation submitted for the fulfillment of the requirement
for the degree of Masters of Arts (Counselling Psychology) in the
Department of Psychology, University of Zululand, 2008. / With the constant rise of HIV/AIDS and pregnancies amongst teenagers in South Africa, it is important for research to investigate and evaluate attitudes held by teenagers towards their sexuality education. This research study examined teenagers attitudes towards sexuality education with a questionnaire, eliciting both quantitative and qualitative data, which was administered in two schools, one urban and one rural, to 200 participants whose ages ranged from 12to 20 years. The findings indicated that learners held generally positive attitudes towards sexuality education, with female and urban learners holding significantly more positive attitudes than male and rural learners respectively. Learners indicated that the sexuality programme provide valuable information especially with regard to their own bodies and self-respect. They were of the opinion that teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS could be prevented through abstinence, condom and contraceptive use, parental involvement, stopping grants for teenage pregnancy, promoting virginity, masturbation the use of sex toys. Finally they thought that sexuality education could be improved parents and teachers telling the truth, through the teaching of values and morals and by making the subject more practical, prominent in churches. Discussion is concerned with findings and recommendations which are of special relevance in the South African context.

Juror perceptions in a rape trial :examining the complainant's ingestion of chemical substances prior to sexual assaultStewart, Destin Nicole 11 August 2007 (has links)
Despite the high incidence of rape in the United States, there are comparatively low rates of reports, arrests, and convictions. More research is needed to examine the factors that influence trial decisions for rape cases. This study examined the impact of a rape complainant?s willingness to ingest a chemical substance (willing or unwilling) and the type of ingested substance (alcohol, GHB, or marijuana) on the decisions of 229 mock jurors. Overall, jurors were biased by the complainant?s use of substances, the complainant?s choice about using, and by rape myths. The complainant?s use of alcohol, regardless of the willingness to use, led to the highest guilt ratings for the defendant. Complainants who willingly ingested a substance were viewed as less credible and more to blame for the rape, compared to those who unwillingly used a substance. The complainant was perceived as the most credible when she unwillingly ingested GHB or marijuana.

Heteronormatividade e homofobia na educação básica pública / HETERONORMATIVITY AND HOMOPHOBIA IN PUBLIC BASIC EDUCATION (Inglês)Barreira, Marília Maia Lincoln 13 August 2015 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2015-08-13 / The work presented here discusses, from the Cultural Studies, Foucault s theory, and Queer
Theory, the (re) production of heteronormativity and homophobia in the context of public
education of Fortaleza. For this, it uses mixed search method, combining quantitative and
qualitative basis. They were applied 400 questionnaires of Prejudice scales against Sexual and
Gender Diversity with teachers, staff and students over 18 years in the municipal and state
schools. Then, formed two focus groups of ten participants from the amount of interlocutors
of the previous phase, one group of students and the other, composed by teachers. Thus, it is
noticed a guided speech on standardization of lifestyles, based on what we deem to be
accepted in society. In conclusion, despite some attempts, in terms of public policies in favor
of including the LGBT community in the school context, the veiled homophobia is still a
reality in these places, manifested by verbal and buoyed by a heteronormative discourse
aggression. It is understood, also, the lack of appropriate information and training of teachers
as some of the major difficulties in promoting an education designed through the concepts of
citizenship and respect for diversity.
Keywords: heteronormativity, homophobia, schooling. / O trabalho aqui apresentado problematiza, a partir dos Estudos Culturais, foulcaultianos
e da Teoria Queer, a (re)produção da heteronormatividade e da homofobia no contexto
da educação pública fortalezense. Para isto, utiliza-se de pesquisa de método misto,
unindo bases quantitativas e qualitativas.
