Attitudes of high school learners towards sexuality education in Zululand

Myeza, Nonhlanhla Patience January 2008 (has links)
A dissertation submitted for the fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Masters of Arts (Counselling Psychology) in the Department of Psychology, University of Zululand, 2008. / With the constant rise of HIV/AIDS and pregnancies amongst teenagers in South Africa, it is important for research to investigate and evaluate attitudes held by teenagers towards their sexuality education. This research study examined teenagers attitudes towards sexuality education with a questionnaire, eliciting both quantitative and qualitative data, which was administered in two schools, one urban and one rural, to 200 participants whose ages ranged from 12to 20 years. The findings indicated that learners held generally positive attitudes towards sexuality education, with female and urban learners holding significantly more positive attitudes than male and rural learners respectively. Learners indicated that the sexuality programme provide valuable information especially with regard to their own bodies and self-respect. They were of the opinion that teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS could be prevented through abstinence, condom and contraceptive use, parental involvement, stopping grants for teenage pregnancy, promoting virginity, masturbation the use of sex toys. Finally they thought that sexuality education could be improved parents and teachers telling the truth, through the teaching of values and morals and by making the subject more practical, prominent in churches. Discussion is concerned with findings and recommendations which are of special relevance in the South African context.

January 2013 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Sexual education was inserted on scholar curriculum in Brazil by the publication of the National Curricular Parameters, by the Education Ministry (MEC, in Portuguese), in 1997. In 2010, UNESCO published the International Guidelines on Sexuality Education, recommending to all countries in the world to discuss themes related to sexuality in scholar education, proposing manners to perform this task with kids since five years old, teenagers and adults of all ages. So, this work consists in an analysis of these proposals according to the historical-dialectical materialism and based on historical-critical pedagogy, in order to identify the interests that sexual education at school comes to satisfy. The starting point of this work is the set of information extracted from the referred proposals, as well some aspects of the pedagogical contemporary ideary that provide their basis, and also some historical information about sexuality and sexual education (empirical reality). In order to unveiling the mediations and internal contradictions of the phenomenon are adopted the assumptions of historical-critical pedagogy referred to its human development conception, scientific knowledge and school functions (theoretical mediation). By the relation between the objectives, methods and contents proposed by the analysed documents and the historical-social totality, this work intends to overcome the apparent apprehension of sexual education at school and identify the interests related to this process (concrete reality). The collected information allows to conclude that historically sexual education is proposed in order to control society, what is also verified in the analysed proposals. By joining to the new pedagogy, the sexual education recommended by MEC and UNESCO omits scientific contents and emphasizes the empirical student interest in the educational process... Living With Muscular Dystrophy: Sexual Education

Beers, Leanne 01 January 2018 (has links)
Sexual pleasure and intimacy are fundamental and innate human needs. Individuals with physical disabilities often find it difficult to meet these needs because of such factors as impaired mobility and lack of knowledge about sexual health. People with physical disabilities are often seen as asexual and not capable of having sex, and sexuality is often not considered a concern among this population. These misconceptions can result in individuals with physical disabilities not receiving basic sex education or advice and guidance when issues arise. Not receiving this attention may impede disabled individuals' sexual potential and personal relationships. This study's focus was on the unique challenges individuals with muscular dystrophy (MD) face regarding sexual pleasure and intimacy. Humanistic psychology and the human rights theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, 4 individuals with MD were asked what sexual education, if any, they received, and if they did receive sexual education, whether it met their needs. Data were analyzed using open and axial coding. Key findings were that there is an overarching theme of sexual silence and lack of sex education for people with MD. These findings can help inform efforts to provide more inclusive education for people with MD and individuals with other types of physical disabilities. Study findings contribute to social change by showing the importance of the need for more inclusive sexual education. Providing such education will better meet the basic human needs of an often undeserved and stigmatized population and end the silence that individuals with physical disabilities have regarding sexual health and intimacy.

Adolescent Sexual Behavior and Sexual Education in the United States

Orbea, Therese B 01 January 2010 (has links)
This review of sexual education in the United States broadly defines the two most common approaches in sexual education seen in this country today. I cover the status of certain sexual behaviors and risks amongst the teenage population in the U.S. and specifically cover reported sexual activity in high school students and overall data on teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This work specifically looks at Maine, California, Texas, Maryland, North Carolina, and New Mexico to highlight the variety of state policies concerning sexual education and the differences in teenage sexual behaviors that exist within each of those six states. A description of how cultural influences can affect a young person’s sexual behavior is also given. In the final discussion section of this paper I have emphasized the need for more comprehensive sexual education programs in the United States and the importance of providing culturally sensitive programs in order to continue the fight against teenage pregnancy and STI rates in adolescents.

Salvador
