Calculation of Wave Propagation for Statistical Energy Analysis ModelsBashir, Hussam January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates the problems of applying Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) tomodels that include solid volumes. Three wave types (Rayleigh waves, Pressure wavesand Shear waves) are important to SEA and the mathematics behind them is explainedhere. The transmission coefficients between the wave types are needed for energytransfer in SEA analysis and different approaches to solving the properties of wavepropagation on a solid volume are discussed. For one of the propagation problems, asolution, found in Momoi [6] is discussed, while the other problem remains unsolveddue to the analytical difficulties involved.

The Corner Market - Connecting the Past and Future NeighborhoodNguyen, Katrina Trozado 18 September 2013 (has links)
The Corner Market on Columbia Pike and South Walter Reed Drive in Arlington, Virginia was to stand at the intersection of yesterday and tomorrow. It would knit together a neighborhood segmented by real estate development and economics. It would fill the cerebral need to connect, interact, and relate through the corporeal needs of nourishment, medicine, and shelter.
The building of four functions, market, pharmacy, bakery, and housing, would complete the fourth corner of Walter Reed Drive and Columbia Pike. It would stand on a four-cornered site with four faces: the welcoming North, serene South, diligent East, and leisurely West. The joining of one side with another would be celebrated architecturally, creating moments of importance and delight.
The Corner Market would speak for its citizens in a timeless language free from the assumptions of newness within an old fabric. It would say that the neighborhood meets at the corner. / Master of Architecture

The impact of grid geometry on displacement calculationsJimenez Arismendi, Eduardo A. 15 November 2004 (has links)
Reservoir simulation models are becoming increasingly sophisticated in tandem with the rapid development of geological modeling methods. Widely used commercial simulators usually model flow through heavily faulted and structurally complex geometries with the flexibility provided by corner-point geometry. However, the nonorthogonality component present within these frameworks may compromise the solution accuracy of the model and the subsequent operational decisions involved.
We propose a systematic methodology to evaluate the impact of complex gridding introducing a new streamline formulation for corner-point geometry. Based on a new time-like variable, the new formulation provides a significantly simpler and more robust development to handle the complexity in structurally demanding and faulted systems. It retains the simplicity and speed of streamline-based flow models and provides an efficient way to visualize nonorthogonal effects.
Applied to various geometries showing challenging features of geology and flow, the displacement fronts obtained from streamline-derived analytic calculation identified the discrepancies characteristic between known solutions and results from two widely used commercial simulators.

Investigation and control of three-dimensional separation/stall in compressorsSun, Jinjing 29 January 2018 (has links)
Pas de résumé / As one of the key components in the modern propulsion system, compressor plays an important role on the performance of the aero-engine. Flow near the endwall in the compressor is complex and corner separation which generates at the corner region by the blade suction surface and the endwall is an inherent flow structure in the blade passage. As a reduction of the compressor performance can be caused by the corner separation especially at off-design and multi-stage conditions. Understanding the mechanism and also control of the corner separation is an effective approach to enhance the compressor stability. Mechanism and control methods of the corner separation in the cascade passage have been investigated in this thesis, following contents are included: l. Simulation by the RANS methods on a highly-loaded PVD cascade has been conducted. The numerical method used is verified by the comparison with the experiment. The topology analysis, overall performance and the flow characteristics of the corner separation are analyzed. The effects of some aerodynamic parameters such as the solidity, aspect ratio and blade fillet on the corner separation have also been studied. 2. The control effects of one active control method by the boundary layer suction and two passive control methods by the slot at the root of the blade and the hub clearance on the corner separation in PVD cascade are studied and compared systematically. The slot configuration on the blade combined under the influence of the aerodynamic parameters have also been conducted in order to know the cascade performance by the aerodynamic parameters under the introduction of the control method. 3. Optimization of the slot configuration at 4° incidence angle is conducted on the NACA65 cascade of LMFA in Lyon. The optimized slotted cascade is verified by the experiment at three incidence angle. 4. DDES method based on the SST k - ω model is used to simulate the optimized NACA65 slotted cascade. The turbulent characteristics in the corner separation and slot jet flow are analyzed, such as the turbulent anisotropy and the velocity spectra. 5. The study of the slot configuration on the corner separation is carried out on a realistic fan stator with high loading and high Mach number. The feasibility and effectiveness of this passive control method in the practical engineering are verified.

Corner Flows in Free Liquid FilmsStocker, Roman, Hosoi, A.E. 24 August 2004 (has links)
A lubrication-flow model for a free film in a corner is presented. The model, written in the hyperbolic coordinate system ξ = x² – y², η = 2xy, applies to films that are thin in the η direction. The lubrication approximation yields two coupled evolution equations for the film thickness and the velocity field which, to lowest order, describes plug flow in the hyperbolic coordinates. A free film in a corner evolving under surface tension and gravity is investigated. The rate of thinning of a free film is compared to that of a film evolving over a solid substrate. Viscous shear and normal stresses are both captured in the model and are computed for the entire flow domain. It is shown that normal stress dominates over shear stress in the far field, while shear stress dominates close to the corner.

Corner Detection Approach to the Building Footprint Extraction from Lidar DataYun, Guan-Chyun 29 January 2008 (has links)
The essential procedure of constructing 3-D building models in urban areas is to extract the building boundary footprint. In the past researches, the common procedures used in extracting the building footprint are applying edge detection, vectorization, and generalization. However, the derived boundary lines occasionally occur zigzag patterns, thus, it still needs further building footprint regularization. This study proposed a new approach in the point of view that the points, lines and polygons are the essential elements in reconstructing 3-D building models. The proposed new method is based on ¡§corner detection approach (CDA)¡¨ and ¡§Adjustment of building footprints and corner points (ABFCO)¡¨ algorithm on Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) or binary classification resultant imagery. This study implements Harris and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) corner detection, afterward, connects all detected points by using convex hull algorithm. However, ortho-non-rectangle buildings would compose poor outlines after convex hull. This study combines open and dilation morphology with the find ignored point algorithm to improve any incorrect connections. Finally, performs the ABFCO algorithm to those points which belong to the same boundary to generalize a line segment, and to figure out the intersections and boundary lines of the buildings.
The experiment results have proved that the overall accuracy of LBP corner detection is about 3.5% higher than Harris corner detection, its overall accuracy is about 92% in rectangular buildings and about 91% in non-rectangular buildings, its standard deviation of boundary length is 0.29m and better than Harris¡¦s 0.55m. We also compared LBP corner detection with edge detection. The overall accuracy of corner detection is about 3% higher than edge detection, standard deviation of boundary length 0.37m is also better than edge detection 0.75m. This study not only proved the corner detection is better than edge detection from data, but also developed ABFCO algorithm is helpful for extracting more accurate building footprint lines.
