The problem with which this study is concerned is that of a descriptive analysis of counseling techniques being used by selected child welfare workers. The method determining the counseling techniques being used was a questionnaire. Seven counseling techniques were tested on the questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed through the use of various sources. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire were not tested. The findings were inconclusive, based upon the data. The workers tended to show eclectic use of techniques. Psychoanalysis and client-centered therapy did poll the greatest number of positive responses. Z-scores and probability between the counseling techniques were determined. The findings supported the responses received by psychoanalysis and client-centered therapy. No recommendations were made.

The role of attachment style in overall family functioning and in individual substance abuse patterns has been researched extensively. Lifestyle constructs have been seen as predictors of substance abuse related behaviors, including future drug related difficulties. Dysfunctional family environments have been seen as predictors of poor mental health outcomes in family members. Despite the high rates of co-morbidity in alcohol and drug dependent individuals, parental lifestyle, attachment style, and the overall influence of family environment on the psychological traits of substance dependent individuals had not been previously examined. This study examined a group of parents and their adult children (actively in substance abuse treatment, with diagnoses of substance dependence) who participated in a weeklong family education program at an inpatient treatment center. Direct effects were found between attachment style, lifestyle and patient traits, as well as several significant total effects (combined direct effect and the effect of overall family environment). Specific indirect effects were also found from individual family environment mediators, including moral religious emphasis and control, on the relationship between independent and dependent variables. An analysis of the results is given, along with a discussion of clinical implications and directions for future research. / by John W. Major psychotic disorders are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, having severe impacts on the people who suffer from the conditions, their families and society. There is evidence that if these conditions are identified and treated early, the prognosis is improved. The purpose of this dissertation study is to produce two manuscripts related to the use of family aided community treatment (FACT) with individuals who are experiencing early psychotic disorders. Using a proof of concept design with multiple repeated-measure t tests, this study focused on first-episode psychotic disorder participants (n = 8), with an average age of 19.6 (sd = 3.28) and males comprising 75% of the sample engaged in a family aided community treatment (FACT) protocol in order to examine if psychiatric symptoms scale scores decreased post-intervention. The hypothesis which stated that a year-long family aided community treatment (FACT) intervention would reduce psychiatric symptoms when assessed by the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS), the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), and the Global Functioning Scales in a first episode psychotic disorder sample, is supported. The FACT intervention decreased psychiatric symptom scores in this population. Implications of this study include improved training on early recognition for mental health clinicians and students, implementation of a specific treatment model in community settings, and policy around treatment funding allocation. / Graduation date: 2012
