The purpose of this study was to try to identify the impact of ambiguity and risk on the auditor's judgment about inherent risk and control risk when planning the audit. A second purpose was to determine how ambiguity tolerance/intolerance affects judgment.

It is well established that patterns of relationship formation in young adulthood are becoming increasingly complex. There is a growing heterogeneity in the types of relationships young adults can form, and there is evidence that the processes of relationship formation are marked by substantial ambiguity. This lack of structure in the young adult dating scene may be accompanied by more flexible gender roles in dating behaviors. Historically men’s roles centered on proactive initiation and women’s roles were characterized by reactive passivity; these gender roles structured the commencement and the progression of early relational ties into formalized unions. However, the deinstitutionalization of dating may have allowed women and men to enact new roles in the pre-relationship phase. This research asks if women and men equally exercise control in both the commencement of relationships and in determining their trajectory. Results indicate that men possess a unique controlling role of the ability to define a relationship, while women typically inhabit a role of clearly communicating their interests levels to men while simultaneously attempting to clarify men’s intentions. / text

The classical mean-variance model, proposed by Harry Markowitz in 1952, has been one of the most powerful tools in the field of portfolio optimization. In this model, parameters are estimated by their sample counterparts. However, this leads to estimation risk, which the model completely ignores. In addition, the mean-variance model fails to incorporate behavioral aspects of investment decisions. To remedy the problem, the notion of ambiguity aversion has been addressed by several papers where investors acknowledge uncertainty in the estimation of mean returns. We extend the idea to the variances and correlation coefficient of the portfolio, and study their impact. The performance of the portfolio is measured in terms of its Sharpe ratio. We consider different cases where one parameter is assumed to be perfectly estimated by the sample counterpart whereas the other parameters introduce ambiguity, and vice versa, and investigate which parameter has what impact on the performance of the portfolio.

Controversies have existed for some time about cybernetics as a subject and difficulties have existed for students in obtaining an overview despite the fact that at some level several cybernetics concepts can be grasped by twelve year olds. An attempt is made to unpack the notion of a subject entity and to indicate how far elements in cybernetics conform to such a concept within a generally acceptable philosophy of science. Ambiguities and controversies among key themes of cybernetics are examined and resolutions offered. How far the nature of cybernetics is likely to create problems of understanding is discussed, along with approaches towards the empirical examination of how cybernetic ideas are understood. An approach to better understanding is formulated and used in an investigation of how and how effectively the concept of feedback is grasped by various groups. Suggestions are offered from the foregoing analysis as to the balance of problems within cybernetics and effective strategies for the future.

Social scientists have been concerned for quite some time with the relationship between tolerance of perceptual ambiguity and ethnocentrism. Some investigations have approached the problem by utilizing ambiguous visual designs. It is the purpose of this research to add a new dimension to these studies by employing different types of visual figures and investigating relationships between perception and ethnocentrism.

Since Frenkel-Brunswick (1948, 1949) introduced the concept of Intolerance of Ambiguity, many investigators have tried to establish both its validity and generality as a personality variable, and its relationship to other personality variables, especially anxiety. The results have been mixed and contradictory. This study further explores the relationship between Intolerance of Ambiguity and anxiety, taking into account certain methodological difficulties in previous work.

I wanted to devote a year of my life toward creating a building and participating in a body of research that was meaningful. My goal proved to be much more complex than originally thought, for meaning itself is ambiguous. Although ambiguous, meaning is not without definition: it is bounded by the contingency of our "cogito" or horizons of experience. And so I argue that if we assign meaning through a function of self reflection, than perhaps a shared experience may transcend the self and reflect community. In an attempt to fertilize community through the built environment, I designed a Charter School on the abandoned 1400 block of Walnut Street in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. / Master of Architecture
