THE ROOT AND HUE OF SCIENCE: BLACK FEMALE STEM PROFESSIONALS IN PALM BEACH COUNTY

Research shows that the United States of America is losing its competitive stance in the area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) relative to other countries. One strategy that could solve this problem would be to diversify the field of STEM to include more women of color. The purpose of this narrative, qualitative research study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women with advanced/terminal degrees who are current STEM professionals in Palm Beach County. Fourteen Black women participated in this study, which yielded four major findings that included early exposure to education’s value. importance of a strong sense of self/self-identity, challenges, and discrimination. The hope is that these findings will provide local administrators and elected officials/decision-makers (e.g., the school district, higher education, and government agencies) with information that could advise future practices and policies to close the gap of under-represented Black women in STEM industries. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (PhD)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Orizaba Urban Design Plan

The site area for the Orizaba Design District is located in central Long Beach, California. Historically the physical development of the area has been heavily influenced by the existence of the Pacific Electric Railroad, which has a right-of-way running diagonally through the site. With the existence of the railroads, as well as the Districts proximity to the Port of Long Beach and major thoroughfares, the area has developed as an industrial site. Despite the industrial nature of the area, starting in 2007 a small group of creative business owners, including architects, graphic designers, interior designers, and others, started to locate in the District, mainly along Coronado and Gladys Avenues. This private investment spurred further development and led to the identification of the site as having the potential to grow into a unique Design District. Based on these realities, the Orizaba Urban Design Plan seeks to provide conceptual and design principles that will provide the City of Long Beach and local business owners with insight into development opportunities. The Plan envisions Orizaba has a safe, pedestrian friendly District that builds on the existing character of the City. To accomplish this, the Plan incorporates elements of site analysis and community meetings into conceptual development, which is further refined to create Plan objectives. The Plan objectives address elements of land use and circulation and explore ways the District can utilize sustainable design principles, particularly Low Impact Development. Finally, form-based codes incorporate Plan objectives into clearly defined design standards. The standards, which address elements of building envelopes, streetscape, visual quality, signage and wayfinding, and street furniture, are provided to aid in implementation and the realization of the District’s potential.

The apparent lack of interest in copepods parasitizing compound be attributed to the manliness of the animals, their associations with both Zooids and the colonial matrix which makes dissection difficult and the chaotic condition of their taxonomy.

The Effects of Beach Restoration on Marine Turtles' Nesting in South Brevard County, Florida

The south Brevard coast of Florida is a major nesting ground for the Atlantic loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). A beach restoration project was completed in the winter of 1980-81 at Indialantic and Melbourne Beach. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of beach restoration on marine turtle nesting during the summer months of 1981 and 1982. A 3.1 km restored beach study area and two control beach study areas, each 3.1 km in length and consisting of natural beach sands, were established. The entire study area (9.3 km) was monitored for nesting and non-nesting emergences (false crawls) and a tagging program was established. The objectives of the study were to determine the effects of the restoration project on the nesting behavior of adult female turtles, and to develop an understanding of the effects of restored beach sands on the survival of marine turtle eggs and hatchlings. During the 1981 nesting season 2,766 marine turtle emergences were recorded. The nesting success rates (nesting emergences/total emergences x 100) for 1981 on the north control beach and the south control beach were 54% and 51% respectively, whereas the restored beach had a statistically significant lower nesting success of 28%. This reduction of nesting success was attributed to a compact substrate that was markedly less friable than the sands of the control beaches. In 1981, the turtles emerging to nest in the restored area often displayed aberrant digging behavior when they encountered the compact sand. By the following summer of 1982, it was evident that the restored beach substrate was less compact. The nesting success for 1982 in the restored beach (46%) rose to a level equal to that of the control beaches (48% and 46%). A total of 3,144 marine turtle emergences were recorded in the 1982 nesting season. To study the effects of beach restoration on the eggs and hatchlings, nests were marked, left to incubate on the beach, and later excavated to determine hatch success. Hatch data and hatchling emergence data were collected on 30 clutches in each of the three beach sections for both the 1981 and 1982 seasons. No significant difference was found between the hatch percentage for the restored beach and the hatch percentages for the control beaches in either study year. The hatchling emergence data, which would indicate the hatchlings' ability to emerge from the sand, indicate no significant difference between the restored beach and control beaches for 1981 and 1982.

Byggnaden inhyser även restaurang och lokaler som står fria för allmänheten. En större, kontinuerlig närvaro tryggar och förlänger säsongen, lokalerna går att hyra för evenemang och under sommarhalvåret kan de öppnas upp, bre ut sig mot skogen eller rulla ner i slänten.Gestaltningen av den nya strukturen vill gå jämte en tanke om social och ekonomisk hållbarhet, byggnaden smyger upp för backen och ska vara inbjudande. Solvarmt, bullar och kaffe. En lek både med klassiska material, lånade drömmar om romanser under en pir och livad dans på blekta plank. The design of the new structure wants to go hand in hand with an idea of ​​social and economic sustainability, the building creeps up the hill and should be inviting. Sunny, buns and coffee. Piping plover population dynamics and effects of beach management practices on piping plovers at West Hampton Dunes and Westhampton Beach, New York

In the early 1990's, a series of habitat changes caused by storms and subsequent beach management by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE, The Corps) provided a unique opportunity to study piping plover population dynamics in a changing environment. In this study, 1993-2004, we attempt to determine the factors that limit or influence the abundance and distribution of piping plovers in West Hampton Dunes (WHD), Long Island, NY, a renourished, highly developed, and high human disturbance area. The piping plover population on Westhampton Island increased after the hurricane of 1938, and declined thereafter. The decline co-occurred with beach development and vegetative succession. After storms in the winter of 1992-1993 breached the island at West Hampton Dunes, piping plovers re-colonized the area. The New York District USACE filled the breach in 1993, and renourished the beach in 1996 and 2000-2001. USACE renourished parts of the groinfield in Westhampton Beach in 1997. Each spring and summer, we monitored plovers intensively at WHD and part of the adjacent town of Westhampton Beach (The Reference Area) 1993-2004. We located nests and estimated reproductive and nest and chick survival rates. We monitored plover management efforts and determined causes of nest loss when possible. We monitored piping plover behaviors and obtained an index to plover food supply. We estimated area of plover habitats and defined areas unsuitable for piping plover nesting. We also obtained indices to human and predator presence on the beach. The WHD piping plover population increased from 0 pairs in 1992 to 39 in 2000 then decreased to 18 pairs in 2004. This decline was closely associated with changes in potential nesting habitat which increased from 22.4 ha in 1992 to 50.1 ha in 2000 then declined to 31.1 ha in 2004 The primary process regulating the WHD population appears to be density dependent immigration and emigration. No other vital rates (clutch size, renest rate, fertility, egg survival, nest survival, chick survival, brood survival, chicks fledged/pair) were correlated with density. The higher equilibrium density at WHD (~1 pair/ha) than at The Reference Area (~0.4 pair/ha) appeared to be a function of the large bay intertidal flats at WHD. The most common nest predators, cats (WHD = 13% of known predated nests), American Crows (17% of known predated nests) and foxes (37% of known predated nests), are newcomers to piping plover habitats. Thus, plovers may be especially vulnerable to them. Predator removal from the study area appeared to improve nest success and chick survival (R2 = 0.79). Predator exclosures at nests reduced nest loss (WHD = 34% exclosed nests lost vs. 43% of unexclosed nests lost, though in one year, one or more foxes learned to exploit plovers in exclosures (22% of all exclosed nests were predated by foxes in 1995). This study highlights the long suspected piping plover paradox: increasing beach width can temporarily raise the carrying capacity of an area, but preventing overwash can reduce or eliminate the natural formation of the bay side foraging flats that increase piping plover density, and sometimes, survival. Moreover, beach stabilization allows human development of the habitat which also reduces the carrying capacity of the environment for piping plovers, increases human/plover interactions, and attracts potential predators. / Ph.
