The Trumpet and Cornet Works of Emile Joseph Trognee (1868-1942): Musical and Pedagogical Contributions

Scheusner, Geoffrey Herther January 2009 (has links)
Emile Joseph Trognee's career took place not only during a time unsurpassed with regards to the musical and constructional developments of the trumpet, but also in the highly important and evolving musical environment of Imperial and Soviet Russia. As a result of an investigation of their inherent musical qualities, this document will establish how Emile Trognee's works are representative of European trumpet and cornet pedagogical and musical trends of the early 20th century. Through formal, thematic and harmonic analysis of these works, the key pedagogical and stylistic features are identified and discussed as consistent or unique to those of the period. Preceding that analysis and critical to an understanding of the contextual relevance of this material is a summation of the important 19th and early 20th century musical developments that influenced the instruction and use of the trumpet and cornet in Russia and Europe. It is hoped that modern study of the challenging works of that period will benefit from a better understanding of the performance and educational practices of those who were present at their inception or particularly adept in their performance.

A Call For Autonomy And Compassion

Leduc, Lucie 15 July 2013 (has links)
The current blanket prohibition of assisted death in Canada continues to be the subject of much debate. This thesis examines the shortcomings and strengths of the Belgium Law on Euthanasia of 2002 and discusses whether similar legislation could be implemented in Canada. More particularly, the thesis looks at the spirit and intent of the law, the conditions under which assisted death is permitted, and the control mechanism present in the Belgian law. The analysis of Belgium’s ten years of experience with assisted death allows us to argue that the risks inherent in assisted death regime can be controlled in a system where an exception is made for competent people in a situation of unbearable suffering. Important safeguards to prevent abuse and protect people from vulnerable groups are identified in the Belgian statute. This thesis recommends in its conclusion to regulate assisted death as an expression of compassion for suffering patients, in line with Canada’s longstanding commitment to respect for patient autonomy.

The psychological contract of international business travellers with their employers : perspectives of Belgian travellers

Pareit, Els Maria Elodia January 2014 (has links)
Subsequent to the growing need for internationally mobile talent, alternative forms of international assignees have arisen (Collings, Scullion and Morley 2007; PricewaterhouseCoopers 2010). This study focuses on such newly appointed internationally working employees, particularly International Business Travellers (abbreviated to IBTs). Inspired by a lack of research attention relating to this labour population, this DBA project opens up the black7box of the IBT working partnership. This is achieved by surveying the role of the IBT as well as the distinctiveness and the state of the psychological contract that the employees involved have with their current employer. The research described and substantiated in this work was devised from the IBT’s perspective, and occurs within a Belgian context. Consistent with a – methodologically revitalising – interpretive phenomenological framework, the study was operationalised on the basis of qualitative, semi7structured interviews with nine IBTs. The thematic data analysis carried out indicated the multifarious, intercultural and strategic role of the IBT, and brought skills specifically characterising the IBT to light. The IBT psychological contract was summarised by eighteen content7related obligations, which contemporaneously display contrasts and similarities with related reference research. The contract in question proved to be evaluated generally positively by the research participants and to develop itself in a unique manner through a noteworthy relational base mixed with a non7negligible transactional facet. Along with a discussion of the principal insights found/contributions made, this thesis includes a number of study limitations, recommendations for further research and implications for successful IBT psychological contract management. Personal reflections are, where relevant, also provided throughout this work.
