Zazzer: Forming Friendships on Digital Social Networks

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Strong communities are important for society. One of the most important community builders, making friends, is poorly supported online. Dating sites support it but in romantic contexts. Other major social networks seem not to encourage it because either their purpose isn't compatible with introducing strangers or the prevalent methods of introduction aren't effective enough to merit use over real word alternatives. This paper presents a novel digital social network emphasizing creating friendships. Research has shown video chat communication can reach in-person levels of trust; coupled with a game environment to ease the discomfort people often have interacting with strangers and a recommendation engine, Zazzer, the presented system, allows people to meet and get to know each other in a manner much more true to real life than traditional methods. Its network also allows players to continue to communicate afterwards. The evaluation looks at real world use, measuring the frequency with which players choose the video chat game versus alternative, more traditional methods of online introduction. It also looks at interactions after the initial meeting to discover how effective video chat games are in creating sticky social connections. After initial use it became apparent a critical mass of users would be necessary to draw strong conclusions, however the collected data seemed to give preliminary support to the idea that video chat games are more effective than traditional ways of meeting online in creating new relationships. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Trainee counselling psychologists' perspectives on the therapeutic uses of self in an online text based simulated counselling session

Warwick, Gregory January 2017 (has links)
Background and Literature: Technology is slowly but surely finding its way into the therapy room. As such, it is moving from the position of being used to aid therapy, such keeping notes on a computer, to being used to facilitate therapy such as online counselling. The sub-type of online counselling known as internet relay chat is a form of counselling that relies solely upon text alone; having no visual or audial cues to aid the therapy and is what this study focuses on. The therapeutic use of self is a difficult concept to define even 55 years after being first introduced. It is a concept that pervades all therapeutic approaches in some way and can be referred to as the planned use of personality, insights, perceptions, and judgments as part of the therapeutic process. It is therefore an important part of therapeutic work with five types of use of self being identified in the literature: use of personality, use of belief system, use of relational dynamics, use of anxiety and use of self-disclosure. However, prior to completing this study it was unknown as to how this core skill could be translated to internet relay chat. Methodology: Eight participants provided transcripts from 20-minute long internet relay simulated counselling sessions. These sessions were part of a training exercise with participants being students from the University of Manchester who were practising online counselling with each other. This study was a mixed-methods study following an explanatory sequential design. The first quantitative stage was a directed content analysis that coded the transcripts for therapeutic uses of self. The second stage was a qualitative grounded theory analysis that analysed semi-structured interviews that looked at the reasons behind why the uses of self from the first stage were used and their perceived impact. Findings: The directed content analysis found that therapeutic uses of self could indeed be translated within this medium with 53 occurrences of self-disclosure, 45 uses of relational dynamics and 15 uses of personality. There were no examples of use of belief system or use of anxiety within this study. The grounded theory analysis resulted in 463 open codes, which were organised under the core category of therapeutic use of self online. This was succeeded by 7 axial codes which were, Conducting Research, Context of Internet Relay chat, Impact of Using Uses of Self, Patterns of Behaviour, Reasons for Using Uses of Self or Not, Therapeutic Use of Self and Impact of Training Exercise. Discussion and Conclusions: The use of self differed from the way it is reported to be used in the participant's face-to-face work and the compensatory techniques used proved similar to those found in the existing literature. It is recommended that that this is a useful exercise for trainee counselling psychologists to undertake as part of their training. This holds value as not all participants knew what a therapeutic use of self was, despite their importance within therapy. It is also beneficial due to the shift in communication we as a society are experiencing.

Introduction: Partial monosomy 5p (Cri du Chat syndrome) and partial trisomy 5p are clinically well characterized syndromes, with several cases described in the literature. This, however, is the first molecular-cytogenetic and clinical study with both syndromes present in the same family. We describe eleven alive affected individuals with partial 5p monosomy or trisomy resulting from a parental balanced translocation t(5;15)(p13;p12). Objectives: The objectives of this work were to identify cytogenetically and clinically the 5p monosomy and trisomy cases and the carriers of the balanced translocation in the family, to determine molecularly the breakpoint involved in the translocation, to evaluate the intrafamilial phenotypic variations, to establish a genotype-phenotype correlation in 5p monosomy and trisomy, and to provide genetic counseling to the family. Casuistic and methods: Four generations of a family were studied. Cytogenetic evaluation was performed on G- and NOR-banded cultured lymphocytes. The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique with bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) probes was used to determine the breakpoint on 5p. Results: Six individuals with partial 5p monosomy and five with partial 5p trisomy were identified, presenting the karyotypes 46,XX or XY,der(5)t(5;15)(p13;p12) and 46,XX or XY,der(15)t(5;15)(p13;p12), respectively. Seven carriers of the balanced translocation were identified, six of them with affected children. After using 12 BAC probes, the breakpoint was mapped to the region corresponding to BAC RP11-1079N14, at 5p13.3, resulting in a deletion or duplication of about 32 Mb in the studied patients. The intrafamilial clinical evaluation of the patients with 5p monosomy showed that they presented most of the characteristics described in the cat eye syndrome, whereas the patients with 5p trisomy displayed a greater clinical variability, compared to the cases from the literature. Conclusions: The study identified the individuals with 5p monosomy and trisomy and the carriers of the balanced translocation, thus enabling to provide genetic counseling to the family. The determination of the breakpoint and of the unbalanced chromosome segment made it possible to establish a more precise karyotype-phenotype correlation and to better characterize the partial 5p monosomy and trisomy syndromes. / TEDE / BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertações

Preparing for Baby Boomer Retirement: Improving the Video Chat Experience in Intergenerational Communication

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of baby boomers' attitudes toward video chat applications and software based on their user experiences through the measurement of the level of use, usefulness, usability and aesthetics preferences. 133 participants recruited at a local public library and at three senior centers took the survey and 14 respondents were interviewed. The results of the study indicate: (1) Baby boomers have diverse attitudes and experiences in video chatting, but their attitudes do not present a significant difference from those of older generations; (2) Baby boomers' preferences for interface design are influenced by their psychological characteristics rather than physical changes; (3) Family members and close friends are a great resource for assistance and motivation for boomers. The knowledge of motivational factors and barrier factors could help maintain the existing baby boomer users and encourage potential users by providing an improved video chat experience design for them to connect with younger generations. This research could also lead social services into the telehealth age by bridging the gap between a traditional intervention and modern instant video communication. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2014
