The Brazilian retail industry has been significantly growing in the past few years, which can be partially justified by increasing its capacity to include a segment of the population that was not part of the consumer market until the 1990´s. This inclusion is a consequence of the credit and installment conditions that have been responsible for the effective increase in sales. The effect of credit can be perceived as a relevant attribute in the consumers´ purchase decision and justifies the interest for extensive research that allows a better understanding of the decision-making process of financing and its influence on the consumers´ decision. Based on the descriptive and quantitative research on consumers of durable and semi-durable goods living in the city of São Paulo, this dissertation evaluated demographic and socio-economic variables affecting the preference for credit agreements and financing contracts offered by the Brazilian retail industry. The specific objective was to measure the consumers´ sensitivity to variations in credit rates and the influence of the \"framing effect\" caused by presenting installments options in financing decisions, confirming the importance of the considerations about \"bounded rationality\" and the limitations in the decision-making processes for financing in retail. The outcomes and the analysis of the preferences over payment alternatives allowed the identification the lack of consumers\' sensibility on the variations of the interest rates, thus identifying evidences of limited rationality in the credit acquisition process. It has also been possible to demonstrate the preference for installments option, which indicates the influence of the payment presentation format, confirming the \"framing effect\" over the consumers´ choices.

There are many academic studies dedicated to addressing the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI). However, few researchers emphasize the internal decision-making process inside corporations, that guiding the choice of a location abroad for the investment, whether in manufacturing plants or research and development centers (R & D). This paper aims to analyze how is the locational decision-making process of multinational companies (MNCs) with regard to the installation of R & D centers abroad. Emphasis will be given to understanding the context in which these decisions are made and what factors interfere in this process. This work questions the supposed existence of rationality in innovation strategies pursued by multinationals when they choose to set up a R & D center outside their home country and concludes that decision making process of MNCs are influenced by the relationships established with different sources of information about the potential location. In this sense, we discuss the role of social networks in decision-making process, taking into account the criteria that multinationals use to form perceptions about certain location. The methodology chosen was to perform an exploratory research supported by a multidisciplinary review of the literature, which included contributions from the following disciplines: Economics, Management and Economic Sociology. This perspective has important consequences both for the formulation of policies aimed at attracting FDI in R & D - since it gives a more complete picture of how multinational companies actually perform location decisions - such as implications of a theoretical nature, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary analyzes well as the limitation of the neoclassical economic approach in the treatment of corporate decision-making process / Mestrado / Politica Cientifica e Tecnologica / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica

The impact and power of Business Intelligence (BI) on the Decision making process in Uppsala University: A case studyAziz, Mustafa Nizamul, Sarsam, Ziyad January 2013 (has links)
Information Systems (IS) is the use of Information Technology (IT). Business Intelligence (BI) is a specific type of IS. A BI system is an information system that uses tools to produce and deliver information. BI has become very important in the recent era as the organizational environments are getting more complex and changing faster than ever before. Research on BI uses in academia has been somewhat limited so far. Most decisions in a university are made based on large amounts of data from internal and external sources. So, a BI tool is necessary there in operational and strategic decision making, and also to compete well in the global environment which is very important for an international university like Uppsala. We made a case study on the large BI tool at Uppsala University. The tool has been used for more than ten years with around five hundred regular users currently. The system is called GLIS (in Swedish: Generellt Lednings Informations System) for Generalized Management Information System. It would be very interesting to investigate how the adoption of this BI system may influence the decision making process in Uppsala University, and thus it becomes the main purpose of this thesis. An inductive approach using a qualitative method was used in this thesis. The data collection was carried out by interviewing seven experts at Uppsala University and from some documents provided by them. Techniques from the grounded theory approach were applied for analyzing data. Our analysis shows positive effects of GLIS in Uppsala University with big improvements in decision making. The thesis draws a conclusion that the BI tool does affect the decision making process in UU as decision making activities take less time, provide better quality decisions, and are much easier using the tool. The thesis also suggests some possible improvements of GLIS for a better functionality and more user involvement. For IS practitioners, the thesis shows the power of IS tool in decision making and university management. For the IS research community, the thesis contributes with the extension of existing theory on BI uses in academia.

"I heard it through the grapevine" : En studie om varför kinesiska studenter väljer att studera på universitetsnivå i Sverige / "I heard it through the grapevine"Enmark, Linnea, Persson, Tova January 2017 (has links)
Vilka faktorer spelar in i kinesiska studenters jämförelse av olika studiedestinationer? / Purpose and research question: The aim of the thesis is to examine why Chinese students choose Sweden as a destination for studies abroad. With the above stated purpose in mind, the research questions are as follow: What factors influence Chinese students’ decision- making of studying abroad? What factors influence Chinese students comparison between different study destinations? How do these factors affect the decision to study in Sweden? Method: The study is based in a qualitative research method. The empirical data is collected through a pilot study with three semi-structured interviews with staff from Linnaeus University and a study with eight semi- structured interviews with Chinese students that currently are studying in Sweden or have studied in Sweden. Conclusion: Chinese students are highly affected by recommendations from alumni with experience from studying in Sweden. The result of the study indicate the importance of advice and recommendations from social links with similar experiences in the decision making when buying a high-involvement service in a culuture with a high degree of Hofstedeés cultural dimensions: collectivism and uncertainty avoidance.

Le rôle des think tanks dans le processus décisionnel européen / The role of think tanks in the european decision making processSoulard, Ombeline 16 November 2018 (has links)
.Think tanks are actors that are part of a didactic and influence perspective. Through expertise and political recommendations, they seek to reach the political sphere. Although most of them emerged in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s and their growth began in the 2000s, think tanks are emerging players in the European decision-making process. They quickly managed to seize the various access points proposed by the European institutions and gradually became key and influential actors in the European decision-making process. The action targets are more specifically the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee. The modalities and strategies of influence put in place by the think tanks to reach these institutions and organs take various forms.

PARENTAL FOOD CHOICE FOR THEIR PRESCHOOL AGED CHILD: A MEANS-END INVESTIGATIONElizabeth I Kielb (10955094) 04 August 2021 (has links)

Preschoolers
in the US are not meeting dietary guidelines, which is concerning since
experience with foods during early childhood may influence food preferences in
later life. To better understand why preschoolers are not meeting dietary
guidelines it is necessary to understand the factors that influence why parents
offer their children specific foods. The purpose of this study was to use the
means-end framework and the laddering interview technique to better understand why parents of preschoolers decide to offer
their children certain foods and why certain feeding strategies are
helpful. A total of
33 parents of preschoolers (3–5-year-olds) completed one-on-one phone
interviews regarding the foods they typically offer their child. Laddering data were elicited for
three food groupings: foods parents typically offer, foods parents typically
avoid, and foods parents prefer to offer. The resulting data were analyzed and
summarized in a series of hierarchical value maps (HVMs). Parent and child-centric themes
emerged as factors that influenced the foods parents offered their preschooler.
The results of this study provide insight into the meanings and beliefs that
impact the food decisions and feeding strategies used by parents of
preschoolers.
