Reliability evaluation of power distribution systems considering electric vehicles and distributed generation / Tillförlitlighetsanalys av elkraftdistributionssystem med hänsyn till elfordon och distribuerad produktion

Qiu, Kaiqing January 2020 (has links)
As human society develops, there is an increasing demand for electricity. However, the reserves of fossil fuels on earth are limited and may run out in the foreseeable future. Therefore, the possibility of replacing traditional fossil fuels with renewable energy sources is widely being investigated to resolve the world-faced energy shortage and environmental problems. The first method is to utilize more renewable energy such as wind and solar power and increase the percentage of distributed generation. Another method is to popularize electric vehicles due to their environmental-friendly and energy-saving characteristics. However, the integration of distributed generation and electric vehicles may greatly influence the operation and planning of power systems in several ways. This might result in deterioration of power system reliability. Since the society development highly depends on a safe and reliable power grid, it is essential to ensure high reliability of power systems when integrated with renewable energy resources. This master thesis aims to investigate the reliability performance of power distribution systems after integrating distributed generation and electric vehicles. First, the probabilistic model of distributed generation and electric vehicles for various scenarios are simulated. After that, a set of reliability analyses based on a standard reliability test system are carried out, in which a sequential Monte-Carlo simulation method is adopted to estimate average reliability indices. The overall conclusion is that the integration of distributed generation enhances power system reliability performance through supplying power to nearby customers in island mode. For electric vehicles, the proper regulation of charging behavior can help reduce the deterioration of power system reliability to the most extent, and the Vehicle-to-Grid mode can also improve system reliability. Furthermore, the electric bus dynamic charging mode has no additional harm to power system reliability performance than non-dynamic charging and has a promising prospect.

Control of Power Conversion Systems for the Intentional Islanding of Distributed Generation Units

Thacker, Timothy Neil 13 January 2006 (has links)
Within the past decade, talk has arisen of shifting the utility grid from centralized, radial sources to a distributed network of sources, also known as distributed generation (DG); in the wake of deregulation, the California energy crisis, and northeastern blackouts. Existing control techniques for DG systems are designed to operate a system either in the connected or disconnected (islanding) mode to the utility; thus not allowing for both modes to be implemented and transitioned between. Existing detection and re-closure algorithms can also be improved upon. Dependent upon the method implemented, detection algorithms can either cause distortions in the output or completely miss a disturbance. The present re-closure process to reconnect to the utility is to completely shutdown and wait five minutes. The proposed methods of this study improve upon existing methods, via simulation and hardware experimentation, for DG systems that can intentionally islanding themselves. The proposed, "switched-mode", control allows for continuous operation of the system during disturbances by transitioning the mode of control to reflect the change in the system mode (grid-connected or islanding). This allows for zero downtimes without detrimental transients. The proposed detection method can sense disturbances that other methods cannot; and within 25 ms (approximately 1.5 line-cycles at 60 Hz). This method is an improvement over other methods because it eliminates the need to purposely distort the outputs to sense a disturbance. The proposed re-closure method is an improvement over the existing method due to the fact that it does not require the system to de-energize before re-synchronizing and reconnecting to the utility. This allows for DGs to continuously supply power to the system without having to shut down. Results show that the system is generally ready to reconnect after 2 to 5 line cycles. / Master of Science

The content of this Master´s Thesis is creating of dynamic models of distributed energy sources in PSCAD and their validation in chosen operation regimes. In the introduction of this thesis is summarized theoretical knowledge about methods for power systems analysis and there is a comparison of static and dynamic methods for power systems analysis. Static methods are used to calculate electric variables in grid nodes. In compare with them, dynamic methods are used to study instantaneous electrical and mechanical variables not only in grid nodes, but also at components of power system. Secondly, we individually designed distributed energy sources in according to requirements, we made a topology of distribution grid and we integrated these energy sources to the distribution grid. Finally, we chose some operation regimes, and studied a behavior of energy sources during these operation regimes.

Microgrid systems: a study on the state-of-the-art and contribution for the dimensioning, application and trading of the power produced.

Del Carpio Huayllas, Tesoro Elena 16 June 2015 (has links)
After the occurrence of some major blackouts like the one that affected the Northern and Northeastern part of the United States in 2003, the one that affected the Southeast, Midwest and Northeastern part of Brazil including Paraguay, in 2009; and the blackout that affected the whole Italy in 2003, to mention a few a few of them, there was a rush for seeking some alternatives to deal with such events or at least find out feasible solutions that can contribute to diminish their impact. The lack of electric power, for whatever reason it was, unveiled one common fact, our modern society is so dependent on electricity that during the blackouts areas like the electrical transport system, financing activity, academic institutions, industries, health centers with no emergency or standby generation, public and residential lighting and even some communication systems failed to operate. The establishment of microgrid systems proved to be an alternative that could be used for this purpose; thus, not only critical loads, but also some of the activities mentioned earlier on could continue their operation during such emergency periods. In addition, the concept of micro-grid systems has recently gained particular attention due to the increasing penetration of distributed generation and also due to the incentives provided by the governments to promote the generation of electricity from renewable sources such as wind power, solar, biomass, small hydroelectric schemes, etc. At present, countless settlements located in remote areas worldwide use microgrid systems to generate and distribute electricity. In this work, the results related to the microgrid technology, specifically its performance towards system conditions such as the islanding mode and grid connected mode of operation will be presented. Particularly, the transition to the islanded mode of operation demanded a more dedicated study during the simulations performed. As for the energy trading between the microgrid and the utility, which can occur when the microgrid generators are lightly loaded, it will be presented a critical analysis about the possible tariff methods to be applied. Such tariffs are so far only applied in the form of government subsidies to promote the use of renewable energy sources. Additionally, an analysis of a microgrid economic feasibility to show how competitive or complimentary this technology is with the utility will be presented herein.

An approach to handle sudden load changes on static voltage stability analysis / Abordagem para considerar variações súbitas de carga na análise estática de estabilidade de tensão

Colombari, Luan Filipe dos Santos 03 March 2017 (has links)
In the context of static Voltage Stability Assessment (VSA), as the power system load grows, bus voltages tend to drop. This reduction may lead to generator or load disconnections caused by undervoltage protection schemes. These events comprise sudden parametric variations that affect the equilibrium diagram and the Voltage Stability Margin (VSM) of power systems. Practical examples of such sudden load changes are caused by the mandatory disconnection of Distributed Generation (DG) units and Undervoltage Load Shedding (ULS). There are no thorough studies in the literature concerning these load parametric variations and the discontinuities that they cause in power system equilibria. This dissertation describes a predictor/corrector scheme specifically designed to handle these discontinuities, so it is possible to evaluate their effect on the VSM of power systems. This method successively calculates the load discontinuities that exist in the equilibrium locus of the system under analysis. It results in the sequence of sudden load variations that happens and their overall impact on the system. When applied to quantify the effect of DG mandatory disconnections and ULS, the proposed predictor/corrector scheme yielded better results than the traditional Continuation Power Flow (CPFLOW), which experienced convergence problems caused by the discontinuities under analysis. However, due to its design, the applicability of the proposed method should be restricted to power systems that go through several successive sudden load changes. In this sense, it should not be regarded as a replacement for the CPFLOW, but rather as a technique that could award this traditional VSA tool with new features to enhance its performance.

Microgeração fotovoltaica no Brasil: condições atuais e perspectivas futuras / Photovoltaic microgeneration in Brazil: current conditions and future prospects

Nakabayashi, Rennyo Kunizo 15 December 2014 (has links)
The economic attractiveness of micro and minigeneration is intrinsically related to conventional electricity price, as the benefit from the financial side, to the micro/minigerador is the avoided cost with the energy purchase. In this way, an economic assessment of photovoltaic distributed generation was performed (from the perspective of the residential consumer). The analysis was made for the 27 brazilian capitals and the following results are presented: Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback (return time on investment). A sensitivity analysis was made, besides a probabilistic approach for the year 2020, using Monte Carlo Simulation. For 2015, the expectation is that in most brazilian capitals already exist favorable conditions for photovoltaic micro/minigenerators, mainly because the electricity tariffs readjustments approved in 2014. It was also observed that, depending on the difference between the prices with and without taxes, self-consumption percentage could greatly influence the financial attractiveness of microgeneration. By 2020, it is expected that the probability of viability for photovoltaic microgeneration, could be over than 90% in the brazilian capitals, while in 2015, the probability of viability for the 27 capital cities is near 62%.

Cassanelli, Luís Guilherme Trovó 01 July 2016 (has links)
With the growing search for sustainable energy countries around the world struggle to dominate more and more new technologies in this competitive market. In this context distributed generation has leveraged most new research to generation or cogeneration of electricity. This paper proposes two reactors hydrogen fuel cell operation. The hydrogen generation from both reactors occurs by reaction between water and aluminium assisted by sodium hydroxide. They were studied on different variables of this reaction mainly the influence of the temperature and the concentration of sodium hydroxide. There was an investigation of sustainable aspects of the reactor, indicating the importance of the industrial reactor and its non-residue environmental degradation, as well as the possible use of empty aluminium cans for producing hydrogen for use in a PEMFC.
