As the massive increase of electronic mail (email) usage continues, SPAM (unsolicited bulk email), has continued to grow because it is a very inexpensive method of advertising. These unwanted emails can cause a serious problem by filling up the email inbox and thereby leaving no space for legitimate emails to pass through. Currently the only defense against SPAM is the use of SPAM filters. A novel SPAM filter GetEmail5 along with the design rationale, is described in this thesis. To test the efficacy of GetEmail5 SPAM filter, an experimental setup was created and
a commercial bulk email program was used to send SPAM and non-SPAM emails to test the new SPAM filter.
GetEmail5s efficiency and ability to detect SPAM was compared against two highly ranked commercial SPAM filters on different sets of emails, these included all SPAM, non-SPAM, and mixed emails, also text and HTML emails.
The results showed the superiority of GetEmail5 compared to the two commercial SPAM filters in detecting SPAM emails and reducing the users involvement in categorizing the incoming emails.
This thesis demonstrates the design rationale for GetEmail5 and also its greater effectiveness in comparison with the commercial SPAM filters tested.

Circuits (ASICs), Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms can now be used to
achieve fully programmable, multiple channel demodulation of Frequency Modulation
(FM) multiplexes. This paper describes the DSP algorithms and ASIC implementation
used in the design of a digital FM demodulator system. Each digital demodulator has
programmable subcarrier frequency demodulation to 4 MHz, programmable digital
output filtering, and tape speed compensation (TSC). The demodulator output is
available in both digital form for direct computer interface and in analog form for
conventional analysis.

M.Sc. (Information Technology) / Recommender systems assist a system user to identify relevant content within a specific context. This is typically performed through an analysis of a system user’s rating habits and personal preferences and leveraging these to return one or a number of relevant recommendations. There are numerable contexts in which recommender systems can be applied, such as movies, tourism, books, and music. The need for recommender systems has become increasingly relevant, particularly on the Internet. This is mainly due to the exponential amount of content that is published online on a daily basis. It has thus become more time consuming and difficult to find pertinent information online, leading to information overload. The relevance of a recommender system, therefore, is to assist a system user to overcome the information overload problem by identifying pertinent information on their behalf. There has been much research done within the recommender system field and how such systems can best recommend items to an individual user. However, a growing and more recent research area is how recommender systems can be extended to recommend items to groups, known as group recommendation. The relevance of group recommendation is that many contexts of recommendation apply to both individuals and groups. For example, people often watch movies or visit tourist attractions as part of a group. Group recommendation is an inherently more complex form of recommendation than individual recommendation for a number of reasons. The first reason is that the rating habits and personal preferences of each system user within the group need to be considered. Additionally, these rating habits and personal preferences can be quite heterogeneous in nature. Therefore, group recommendation becomes complex because a satisfactory recommendation needs to be one which meets the preferences of each group member and not just a single group member. The second reason why group recommendation is considered to be more complex than individual recommendation is because a group not only includes multiple personal preferences, but also multiple personality types. This means that a group is more complex from a social perspective. Therefore, a satisfactory group recommendation needs to be one which considers the varying personality types and behaviours of the group. The purpose of this research is to present PerTrust, a generic framework for group recommendation with the purpose of providing a possible solution to the aforementioned issues noted above. The primary focus of PerTrust is how to leverage both personality and trust in overcoming these issues.

3D Computer graphics is becoming an almost ubiquitous part of the world in which we live. being present in art. entertainment. advertising. CAD. training and education. scientific visualisation and with the growth of the internet. in e-commerce and communication. This thesis encompasses two areas of study: The design of algorithms for high quality. real-time 3D computer graphics rendering hardware and the methodology and means for achieving this. When investigating new algorithms and their implementation in hardware. it is important to have a thorough understanding of their operation. both individually and in the context of an entire architecture. It is helpful to be able to model different algorithmic variations rapidly and experiment with them interchangeably. This thesis begins with a description of software based modelling techniques for the rapid investigation of algorithms for 3D computer graphics within the context of a C++ prototyping environment. Recent tremendous increases in the rendering performance of graphics hardware have been shadowed by corresponding advancements in the accuracy of the algorithms accelerated. Significantly. these improvements have led to a decline in tolerance towards rendering artefacts. Algorithms for the effective and efficient implementation of high quality texture filtering and edge antialiasing form the focus of the algorithm research described in this thesis. Alternative algorithms for real-time texture filtering are presented in terms of their computational cost and performance. culminating in the design of a low cost implementation for higher quality anisotropic texture filtering. Algorithms for edge antialiasing are reviewed. with the emphasis placed upon area sampling solutions. A modified A-buffer algorithm is presented that uses novel techniques to provide: efficient fragment storage; support for multiple intersecting transparent surfaces; and improved filtering quality through an extendable and weighted filter support from a single highly optimised lookup table.
