Bayesian Filtering In Nonlinear Structural Systems With Application To Structural Health Monitoring

During strong earthquakes structural systems exhibit nonlinear behavior due to low-cycle fatigue, cracking, yielding and/or fracture of constituent elements. After a seismic event it is essential to assess the state of damage of structures and determine if they can safely resist aftershocks or future strong motions. The current practice in post-earthquake damage assessment relies mainly on visual inspections and local testing. These approaches are limited to the ability of inspectors to reach all potentially damaged locations, and are typically intended to detect damage near the outer surfaces of the structure leaving the possibility of hidden undetected damage. Some structures in seismic prone-regions are instrumented with an array of sensors that measure their acceleration at different locations. We operate under the premise that acceleration response measurements contain information about the state of damage of structures, and it is of interest to extract this information and use it in post-earthquake damage assessment and decision making strategies. The objective of this dissertation is to show that Bayesian filters can be successfully employed to estimate the nonlinear dynamic response of instrumented structural systems. The estimated response is subsequently used for structural damage diagnosis. Bayesian filters combine dynamic response measurements at limited spatial locations with a nonlinear dynamic model to estimate the response of stochastic dynamical systems at the model degrees-of-freedom. The application of five filters is investigated: the extended, unscented and ensemble Kalman filters, the particle filter and the model-based observer. The main contributions of this dissertation are summarized as follows: i) Development of a filtering-based mechanistic damage assessment framework; ii) Experimental validation of Bayesian filters in small and large-scale structures; iii) Uncertainty quantification and propagation of response and damage estimates computed using Bayesian filters.

Esta dissertação apresenta novos resultados para a solução de problemas de implementação computacional na estimativa de sistemas singulares e sistemas Markovianos. São apresentados algoritmos alternativos para problemas de filtragem de maneira a minimizar problemas causados principalmente por erros de arredondamento e mal condicionamento de matrizes. O trabalho envolve basicamente algoritmos array e filtragem de informação para a estimativa de sistemas singulares nominais e robustos. Também é deduzido um algoritmo array para a filtragem de sistemas lineares sujeitos a saltos Markovianos. / This dissertation presents new results to solve computational implementation problems to estimate singular and Markovian systems. Alternative algorithms to handle computational filtering errors due rounding errors and ill-conditioned matrices are developed. This dissertation comprehends basically array algorithms and information filters for the estimate of nominal and robust singular systems. Also, it is developed an array algorithm for Markovian jump linear systems filtering.

Signal Processing Using Short Word-Length.

Recently short word-length (normally 1 bit or bits) processing has become a promising technique. However, there are unresolved issues in sigma-delta modulation, which is the basis for 1b/2b systems. These issues hindered the full adoption of single-bit techniues in industry. Among these problems is the stability of high-order modulators and the limit cycle behaviour. More importantly, there is no adaptive LMS structure of any kind in 1b/2b domain. The challenge in this problem is the harsh quantization that prevents straightforward LMS application. In this thesis, the focus has been made on three axes: designing new single-bit DSP applications, proposing novel approaches for stability analysis, and tacking the unresolved problems of 1b/2b adaptive filtering. Two structures for 1b digital comb filtering are proposed. A ternary DC blocker structure is also presented and performance is tested. We also proposed a single-bit multiplierless DC-blocking structure. The s tability of a single-bit high-order signma-delta modulator is studied under dc inputs. A new approach for stability analysis is proposed based on analogy with PLL analysis. Finally we succeeded in designing 1b/2b Wiener-like filtering and introduced (for the first time) three 1b/2b adaptive schemes.

Combined map personalisation algorithm for delivering preferred spatial features in a map to everyday mobile device users

In this thesis, we present an innovative and novel approach to personalise maps/geo-spatial services for mobile users. With the proposed map personalisation approach, only relevant data will be extracted from detailed maps/geo-spatial services on the fly, based on a user’s current location, preferences and requirements. This would result in dramatic improvements in the legibility of maps on mobile device screens, as well as significant reductions in the amount of data being transmitted; which, in turn, would reduce the download time and cost of transferring the required geo-spatial data across mobile networks. Furthermore, the proposed map personalisation approach has been implemented into a working system, based on a four-tier client server architecture, wherein fully detailed maps/services are stored on the server, and upon a user’s request personalised maps/services, extracted from the fully detailed maps/services based on the user’s current location, preferences, are sent to the user’s mobile device through mobile networks. By using open and standard system development tools, our system is open to everyday mobile devices rather than smart phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) only, as is prevalent in most current map personalisation systems. The proposed map personalisation approach combines content-based information filtering and collaborative information filtering techniques into an algorithmic solution, wherein content-based information filtering is used for regular users having a user profile stored on the system, and collaborative information filtering is used for new/occasional users having no user profile stored on the system. Maps/geo-spatial services are personalised for regular users by analysing the user’s spatial feature preferences automatically collected and stored in their user profile from previous usages, whereas, map personalisation for new/occasional users is achieved through analysing the spatial feature preferences of like-minded users in the system in order to make an inference for the target user. Furthermore, with the use of association rule mining, an advanced inference technique, the spatial features retrieved for new/occasional users through collaborative filtering can be attained. The selection of spatial features through association rule mining is achieved by finding interesting and similar patterns in the spatial features most commonly retrieved by different user groups, based on their past transactions or usage sessions with the system.

Advanced Texture Unit Design for 3D Rendering System

In order to achieve more realistic visual effect, the texturing mapping has become a very important and popular technique used in three-dimensional (3D) graphic. Many advanced rendering effects including shadow, environment, and bump mapping all depend on various applications of texturing function. Therefore, how to design an efficient texture unit is very important for 3D graphic rendering system. This thesis proposes an advanced texture unit design targeted for the rendering system with the fill rate of two fragments per cycle. This unit can support various filtering functions including nearest neighbor, bi-linear and tri-linear filtering. It can also provide the mip-map function to automatically select the best texture images for rendering. In order to realize the high texel throughput requirement for some complex filtering function, the texture cache has been divided into four banks such that up to eight texels can be delivered every cycle. The data-path design for the filtering unit has adopted the common expression sharing technique to reduce the required arithmetic units. The proposed texturing unit architecture has been implemented and embedded into a 3D rendering accelerator which has been integrated with OpenGL-ES software module, Linux operation system and geometry module, and successfully prototyped on the ARM versatile platform. With the 0.18um technology, this unit can run up to 150 Mhz, and provide the peak throughput of 1.2G texel/s.

Personalized Document Recommendation by Latent Dirichlet Allocation

Accompanying with the rapid growth of Internet, people around the world can easily distribute, browse, and share as much information as possible through the Internet. The enormous amount of information, however, causes the information overload problem that is beyond users¡¦ limited information processing ability. Therefore, recommender systems arise to help users to look for useful information when they cannot describe the requirements precisely. The filtering techniques in recommender systems can be divided into content-based filtering (CBF) and collaborative filtering (CF). Although CF is shown to be superior over CBF in literature, personalized document recommendation relies more on CBF simply because of its text content in nature. Nevertheless, document recommendation task provides a good chance to integrate both techniques into a hybrid one, and enhance the overall recommendation performance. The objective of this research is thus to propose a hybrid filtering approach for personalized document recommendation. Particularly, latent Dirichlet allocation to uncover latent semantic structure in documents is incorporated to help us to either obtain robust document similarity in CF, or explore user profiles in CBF. Two experiments are conducted accordingly. The results show that our proposed approach outperforms other counterparts on the recommendation performance, which justifies the feasibility of our proposed approach in real applications.

Control and Optimization of a Compact 6-Degree-of-Freedom Precision Positioner Using Combined Digital Filtering Techniques

This thesis presents the multivariable controller design and implementation for a high-precision 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) magnetically levitated (maglev) positioner. The positioner is a triangular single-moving part that carries three 3-phase permanent-magnet linear-levitation-motor armatures. The three planar levitation motors not only generate the vertical force to levitate the triangular platen but control the platen's position in the horizontal plane. All 6-DOF motions are controlled by magnetic forces only. The positioner moves over a Halbach magnet matrix using three sets of two-axis Hall-effect sensors to measure the planar motion and three Nanogage laser distance sensors for the vertical motion. However, the Hall-effect sensors and the Nanogage laser distance sensors can only provide measurements of the displacement of all 6-axis. Since we do not have full-state feedback, I designed two Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) multivariable controllers using a recursive discrete-time observer. A discrete hybrid H2/H(infinity) filter is implemented to obtain optimal estimates of position and orientation, as well as additional estimates of velocity and angular velocity for all 6 axes. In addition, an analysis was done on the signals measured by the Hall-effect sensors, and from there several digital filters were tested to optimize the readings of the sensors and obtain the best estimates possible. One of the multivariable controllers was designed to close the control loop for the three-planar-DOF motion, and the other to close the loop for the vertical motion, all at a sampling frequency of 800 Hz. Experimental results show a position resolution of 1.5 micrometers with position noise of 0.545 micrometers rms in the x-and y-directions and a resolution of less than 110 nm with position noise of 49.3 nm rms in z.

The information that World Wide Web (WWW) provides have grown up very rapidly in recent years, which resulted in new approaches for people to reach the information they need. Although web pages and search engines are indeed strong enough for us to reach what we want, it is not an efficient solution to present data and wait people to reach it. Some more creative and beneficial methods had to be developed for decreasing the time to reach the information and increase the quality of the information. Recommendation systems are one of the ways for achieving this purpose. The idea is to design a system that understands the information user wants to obtain from user actions, and to find the information similar to that. Several studies have been done in this field in order to develop a recommendation system which is capable of recommending movies, books, web sites and similar items like that. All of them are based on two main principles, which are collaborative filtering and content based recommendations. Within this thesis work, a recommendation system approach which combines both content based (CB) and collaborative filtering (CF) approaches by capturing the effect of time like purchase time or release time. In addition to this temporal behavior, the influence of demographic information of user on purchasing habits is also examined this system which is called &ldquo / TDRS&rdquo / .

Cluster-based Collaborative Filtering Recommendation Approach

Recommendation is not a new phenomenon arising from the digital era, but an existing social behavior in real life. Recommendation systems facilitate such natural social recommendation behavior and alleviate information overload facing individuals. Among different recommendation techniques proposed in the literature, the collaborative filtering approach is the most successful and widely adopted recommendation technique to date. However, the traditional collaborative filtering recommendation approach ignores proximities between items. That is, all user ratings on items are deemed identically important and given an equal weight in neighborhood formation process. In this study, we proposed a cluster-based collaborative filtering recommendation approach that takes into account the content similarities of items in the collaborative filtering process. Our empirical evaluation results show that the cluster-based collaborative filtering approach improves the prediction accuracy without sacrificing the prediction coverage, using those achieved by the traditional collaborative filtering approach as performance benchmarks. Due to the sparsity problem, when a prediction is made based on few neighbors, the cluster average method could achieve a better prediction accuracy than the proposed approach. Thus, we further proposed an enhanced cluster-based collaborative filtering approach that combines our approach and the cluster average method. The empirical results suggest that the enhanced approach could result in a prediction accuracy comparable to or even better than that accomplished by the cluster average method.

Curvelet processing and imaging: adaptive ground roll removal

In this paper we present examples of ground roll attenuation for synthetic and real data gathers by using Contourlet and Curvelet transforms. These non-separable wavelet transforms are locoalized both (x,t)- and (k,f)-domains and allow for adaptive seperation of signal and ground roll. Both linear and non-linear filtering are discussed using the unique properties of these basis that allow for simultaneous localization in the both domains. Eventhough, the linear filtering techniques are encouraging the true added value of these basis-function techniques becomes apparent when we use these decompositions to adaptively substract modeled ground roll from data using a non-linear thesholding procedure. We show real and synthetic examples and the results suggest that these directional-selective basis functions provide a usefull tool for the removal of coherent noise such as ground roll
