An Architectural Investigation Of Leisure Spaces In The Roman Domestic Context: The Case Of EphesusCinici, Ahmet 01 October 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Leisure is most basically defined as the time free from work. The ancient conception and forms of leisure were quite different from the modern ones, which came into discussion during the industrial era. The Roman society was highly stratified and comprised of diverse social classes for which leisure acquired different forms and meanings. Every stratum of the Roman society enjoyed the possibilities and pleasures of leisure proportional to its hierarchy in the social system, so that leisure can be investigated in both public and private contexts in the Roman world. This study aims to investigate leisure, which was one of the main driving social forces in the Roman society, in spatial terms with reference to Roman domestic architecture. The study focuses on central Italy and particularly on Ephesus, the latter of which is a good example to discuss how the Roman conception of leisure was spatially materialized in a provincial private setting since a group of well studied, documented, and published houses constitute an appropriate comparative sample and context in Ephesus. The spatial organization and characteristics of the spaces housing leisurely activities are discussed on the basis of an axes-scheme that regulated and even dictated the visual and bodily interaction of the participants with certain spaces and elements during leisure activities either in a static state (sitting, reclining), or a kinetic one (walking, perambulating). The visual axes are those perceived in either of these states, along which the eye is directed towards a visual focal point, whereas the dynamic axes are those along which people move during a kinetic leisurely activity. The location, architecture, and use of leisure-oriented spaces in the Roman period houses in Ephesus, such as triclinium, exedra, oecus, museion, and peristyle courtyard are examined with reference to the proposed axes-scheme to present and compare the operation of leisure in the Roman provincial and private setting.

Archaeometrical Studies On Plasters Of Some Historical BuildingsCiftci, Burcu Devrim 01 February 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The present study aims to investigate the composition of historical plasters to get information about their material characteristics and their technology. Plaster samples were obtained from four Ankara Citadel houses built in late Ottoman period.
In order to determine the raw material characteristics and mineralogical properties of plasters / chemical analyses, optical observation of cross sections, petrographic analyses of thin sections, elemental analyses by ICP-OES, X-ray powder diffraction analyses for the determination of mineral phases, thermogravimetric analyses and FTIR analyses were carried out. Interpretation of all the analytical examination was used to understand the composition and unique character of plaster samples studied.
Observation of thin sections revealed more plaster layers than those observed in cross sections. Up to twelve layers could be observed with different colours, such as blue, red, yellow, green, white and brown.
Generally, thicknesses of white plaster layers were found to be thicker than the others. In two samples, two black boundaries between plaster layers were identified which could be an indication of the use of asphalt for isolation purposes, like dampness proofing or heat insulation. Soluble salt contents of the plaster samples were in the range 3.04%-9.22%, with an average being 6.62%. The anions identified were Cl-, SO42-. In few samples, PO43-, NO2- and NO3- were found. Binder was found to be lime and gypsum. The amount of binder in terms of total calcium oxide, CaO, was found to be in the range of 33.5-43.6%, with an average being 37.9%. Amount of aggregate was about 62.1% as average. The main minerals identified in plaster samples were calcite and gypsum. Gypsum might be added to increase the strength of the plaster. Beside calcite and gypsum, quartz and pozzolanic activity related mineral, Opal-A, were found in some of the samples. In red plaster layers hematite mineral was also identified. Other colour effective elements were found to be Fe, Sb, Mn, Cu, Cr and Ni. Presence of organic additives was observed but clear identification was not established.

Turkey has a rich cultural heritage and traditional houses. However, this
heritage is under the danger of extinction due to several reasons. On of the
most important reason is not being able to make simple repair and maintenance
of these buildings. Actually, to leave this heritage to future generations the
most effective and low cost method for conserving traditional buildings is the
simple repair and maintenance. In Turkey, the responsibility and authority of
simple repair and maintenance is delegated to local administrations by the law
of Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage no 2863 amended by law no
5226. According to this law Conservation Implementation Control and
Education Bureaus (KUDEB) is the responsible organ in municipalities for
simple repair and maintenance. In this thesis, in the light of current regulations
KUDEB& / #8217 / s tasks in simple repair and maintenance together with functioning
points. Later, a model was proposed regarding the functioning and financing of
simple repair and maintenance in order to fill these missing points. Moreover,
these proposals were tested in Sivrihisar scale and illustrated on the facades of
Sivrihisar Houses.

Christopher Alexander' / s Concept Of " / living Structure" / : Theories Of " / wholeness" / And " / centers" / And Its Application To Traditional Kastamonu HousesMelez Bicer, Yasemin 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to gain an insight to the properties that make a living structure and examine these properties and the concept of living structure in traditional Kastamonu Houses in the light of Christopher Alexander& / #8217 / s theories of wholeness and centers.
Especially in the last century, building activity has become a significant field with the developments in the construction techniques and technology. In this way, human life is being shaped also, beside the earth. The traditional housing fabric, which is the heritage of years of experience and the reflection of the lifestyle of a particular society, is being neglected. In any part of the world, the number of the buildings, resembling each other so much, increases / and most of the time, they lack the values that support the quality of life.
Within the scope of this thesis, first of all, Alexander& / #8217 / s definition of order, theories of wholeness and centers, concept of living structure are studied. Then, traditional Kastamonu houses are analyzed, both visually and spatially / and properties that make a living structure are examined. The relation between living structure and expression of self and the importance of belonging to own time and place are put forward. Then, how different centers are united together by the help of these features is seen.
This study helps to understand, how to create more sensitive environments to live by studying and understanding traditional housing concepts before losing them totally. Moreover, it emphasizes the values of traditional Kastamonu houses, which support the quality of life.

Post Disaster Temporary Houses: The Production Of Place In The Case Of 1999 Marmara Earthquakes In KocaeliBas, Sibel 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This master thesis will be focusing on prefabricated temporary houses and settlements in
Kocaeli &ndash / as a place-making process &ndash / throughout post disaster reconstruction period of
1999 Marmara Earthquakes. Main stimulant for this research is the lack of
acknowledgement of transforming urban and social environments under the overwhelming
forces of disasters both in academic and professional domains in the country.
Appropriation and self-identification of temporary accommodation is a way of adaptation
and a reaction to disruption caused by forced relocation due to disasters. Personalization
process transforms the houses into homes, spaces into places. This transformation is to be
analyzed within the framework of altering urban areas, disasters and adaptation processes
of householders for the resumption of home. Case study will be based on temporary
housing settlements &ndash / prefabricated houses &ndash / in city of Kocaeli.
The aim of this work is to understand the effective forces operating during post disaster
temporary housing periods, to improve reconstruction and planning processes with the
information generated out of the research and to provide data for the policy-making
authorities and academic field.

Från 2D till BIM i ett trähusföretag : Transition from 2D-CAD to BIM in a timber frame home companyFält, Pernilla January 2009 (has links)

A prefabricated timber frame house previously built by Villafabriken AB has been modeled in Autodesk Revit Architectural, a 3D-program based on BIM-technology. This has been done tosee if it’s possible to produce the publications that Villafabriken demands from the designengineer’s work, and examine which possible extra values that may arise compared to traditional 2D-CAD drawing.BIM is short for Building Information Modeling. Everything is stored in a single database and a change in the project file is automatically updated across the project. BIM provides more than just drawings since information from the model can be retrieved in various ways such as lists and quantity schedules. It was possible to produce the publications that Villafabriken demanded using Revit, but BIM doesn’t only mean a new way of drawing, it also require a change in the company’s process were the information from the model is being used.
