Basin Analysis of the Porter Group, Castle Hill Basin, Canterbury: Implications for Oligocene Tectonics in New Zealand.

Congdon, Linda Marie January 2003 (has links)
A basin analysis of the Oligocene Porter Group rocks in Castle Hill Basin, Canterbury, was completed. The Porter Group contains the Coleridge Formation which comprises a lower sandstone unit and an upper micritic limestone unit, and the Thomas Formation which consists of biosparite limestone and interbedded tuffs. Basin analysis provided evidence that the Coleridge Formation lower sandstone unit was deposited in an inner shelf setting based upon its moderate sorting, large grain size range, laterally continuous geometry and lack of bedforms due to intense bioturbation. The upper micritic limestone is a mid shelf deposit composed of micrite and minor clastic grains. Provenance analysis has classified the lower sandstone unit as a quartz arenite. Both metamorphic and plutonic source areas are likely for the sandstone, along with reworked grains from underlying Formations based on QFL, SEM-CL, heavy mineral and glauconite analysis. The Thomas Formation limestone is a typical New Zealand cool water biosparite deposited on the inner shelf as a result of storms and debris flows, with the upper cross-bedded limestone lithofacies being reworked by currents in shallow water. Petrographic data showing multiple stages of diagenesis at the upper contact of the Thomas Formation provides evidence for a major tectonic event. The interbedded tuffs are a result of basaltic marine volcanism on the inner to mid shelf. The tuffs are reworked and deposited by turbidity current, debris flow and storms. Analysis of a dike within the Thomas Formation volcanics showed a weakly alkaline geochemical signature that is indicative of volcanism related to extension. A regional synthesis compared the Porter Group rocks in Castle Hill Basin with Oligocene rocks in North Canterbury, West Coast and North Otago. Oligocene quartz-rich sandstones are found in Castle Hill Basin, Harper Valley, Avoca and Culverden while micritic limestone is found on the East Coast from Marlborough to Otago. Oligocene basaltic volcanics interbedded with limestone and karst unconformities are found in Castle Hill Basin, Culverden and Otago. Normal faulting may be responsible for thickness variations and several regional karst unconformities in the eastern South Island. Plate reconstructions based on sea floor magnetic anomalies also suggests the New Zealand region was tectonically active during the Oligocene. Mounting evidence, including Eocene-Oligocene faulting and volcanism in the South Island, suggests that New Zealand may not be best described as a passive margin during the Early-Mid Tertiary.

Společenstvo epigeických brouků aktivního vápencového lomu / Insect community structure and insect biodiversity in active limestone quarry

TULACHOVÁ, Marie January 2014 (has links)
We focused on the study of epigeic beatles living in a lime pit Černý Důl. This locality is situated in the buffer-zone of Natural park of Krkonoše - 7 km far from Vrchlabí. We used e method of falling traps. We chosed non-toxical solution of NaCl as a preservative medium because of the lokality characteristics. The traps were put on a upper part of the pit. We put traps on the three of five chosen localities. 50 traps could be found on each of these three localities. We caught 2024 individuals of the order Coleoptera. These families were most abundant: (1825 pc), Silphidae (158 pc) and Staphylinidae (24 pc). 726 individuals were caught on the locality number 0, 813 on the locality number 1, and 485 on the locality number 2. The most abundant species were: Pterostichus melanarius (529 pc), Abax parallelepipedus (455 pc) and Abax ovalis (339 pc). We found 11 eurotype species, 17 antropogenic species, and 1 relict species (Cychrus attenuatus). We computed an index of antropogenic influence (ISD) on the Carabidae species. The ISD value was 34.74, which means that beatles are influenced. Platydracus stercorarius (6 pc) was the most abundant species of family Staphylinidae and Nicrophorus vespilloides (100 pc) was the most abundant species of the family Silphidae.

The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the limestone, and gypsum in the ground tillage of cotto crop was submitted to different methods of fertilizer application in the sowing. / This paper analyzes the technological properties of two types of limestone, commercially known as Crema Paraná and Crema Brasil, and clarifies doubts about the genesis of the material, to contribute to the specification of this type of dimension stone in architecture. As a newly entered the market material, little is known about the behavior of limestone, a fact that may compromise its performance and the aesthetic aspect of the building in which will be employed. The Limestone is a sedimentary rock with na allochemic origin, with fine grain and composed mainly of calcite (CaCO3), which draws the attention of architects, mainly due to its light color and fine and homogeneous texture. The work thus covers the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of two types of limestone, from the current regulations, and chemical change tests. The chemical and mineralogical composition was obtained by petrographic and x-ray diffraction. The physical indexes analyzed were the density, porosity and water absorption. The mechanical tests determined the compressive strength and flexural strength in 4-point, the hard body impact and abrasion. The values of Crema Parana’s physical indexes (3.87% water absorption) fit those recommended by ASTM C568, indicating low fluid absorption capacity. Already Crema Brazil presented a percentage of 3.59%, slightly higher than the established parameters. In regard to compressive strength both showed satisfactory results. In flexural strength test, in spite of this standard to establish values only for flexion in 3 points, the rocks analyzed showed the result of 9,30MPa (Crema Paraná) and 7,20MPa (Crema Brasil) in saturated condition - which points to be more favorable as regards resistance, giving more value than that recommended by ASTM. The abrasion resistance after 500m path, presented total loss of polishing of the both rocks. It is, therefore, a low hardness and high density material, having restricted applications and should be avoided especially in areas of high foot traffic and wet environments due to the mineralogical composition of carbonate nature and fine texture.
