'Nursing by the long stretch of the arm' : an exploration of community nursing middle managers' experiences of role enactment within Community Health Partnerships in three regions of Scotland

Allan, Elaine January 2014 (has links)
Aim: This thesis aimed to explore community nursing middle manager role enactment in managing change within Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) in three regions of Scotland from 2008-2011. Background: CHPs were established to play a key role in shifting care from the acute to the community setting. Within this context the community nursing workforce has been adapting roles in response to Scottish Government (SG) directives. However literature review demonstrated there has been very little research into the role of Community Nurse Middle Managers (CNMMs) in the midst of this change. This investigation sought to address this deficit in the literature. Design and Methodology: The study was conducted in four distinct phases comprising of the reflexive, foundational, recursive and expansive. A total of 42 semi-structured interviews were conducted over the period of investigation. The investigation was qualitative and phenomenological in character. A hermeneutic approach was adopted, broadly based on Heideggerian philosophy. More specifically this study drew on the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach of Jonathan Smith (1996). Main findings: In general CNMMs perceived that their jobs had become more complex, with the pace and intensity of work having increased. They held a wide range of responsibilities managing the challenges of driving change within a hierarchy and professional bureaucracy. Opportunities for education and learning were felt to have reduced. A small but significant proportion had left and some were considering leaving the NHS service. A primary motivation for CNMMs was maintaining an implicit connection with service users. They were proud to be members of the nursing profession and aligned their identity with their career history. This was perceived to influence their management and leadership style. In overcoming some of the personal challenges they faced they identified protective factors or “assets” to counteract stress. The application of a salutogenic perspective emerged as important in supporting this. Conclusion: The study has addressed a knowledge gap in literature. It contributes to understandings of NHS community nursing, middle management, role, change and Community Health Partnership literature. In particular it gives a voice to the perspectives of community nursing middle managers in Scotland. It suggests that much more attention needs to be paid to the needs, constitution and sustenance of middle managers in Scottish community nursing and that this has policy, practice, education and research implications.

Evaluating the implementation of E-Government in developing countries : the case of Nigeria

Ashaye, Olusoyi Olatokunbo Richard January 2014 (has links)
E-Government applications have emerged rapidly in the developing world. This is due to its usefulness as an enabling tool to increase efficiency and enhance transparency. This research focuses on insights into the implementation process of e-Government within the context of developing countries. Institutional theory was the change theory applied since it explains why organisational structures and values endure. The neo-institutional theory was adopted by using multi-level approach and multi-stakeholder analysis, and these enable environmental forces to be used with other factors such as organisational and role of network actors. Due to its flexibility, institutional theory has been combined it with other theories and models such as: Lewin’s 3-stage model (deeply enriches understanding of how change occurs as well as the role of change agent); Driver-Barrier model (to assist in recognising the potential drivers and barriers that might influence successful e-Government implementation); Comprehensive Barrier framework (relevant for study of e-Government and information system barriers that could be used as checklist for project planning and evaluation);and Three-Quarter Moon model (developed for e-Commerce adoption and applied the model to e-Government implementation) The research questions and proposed framework were tested and validated by carrying out qualitative analysis using multi-methods approach for data collection. Case study research was adopted with focus on government-to-employee (G2E) within public sector organisations in Nigeria, West Africa. The research collection strategy included an in-depth investigation of organisations’ information systems using both primary and secondary data collection. The series of techniques adopted are questionnaire responses, interviews, document analysis and observation. The research findings suppose that most of the factors – internal and external, and characteristics – benefits, barriers and risks, identified as influential to e-Government implementation are similar to those discussed in existing literature, although some may be specific to the Nigerian public sector context. Based in the findings, the researcher was able to reconceptualise the developed model for e-Government implementation, which was specific to the case study. The model was then extended for application by other countries. A novel subset model – Rectangular Four-Actor-Activity - was also developed for identifying e-Government implementation key actors and their main activities, which is a subset of the holistic framework. The conceptualised model should help managers and academicians to understand the step-by-step guide to e-Government implementing process by ranking and mapping of relevant concepts and factors within the framework, understanding the difference between theory and practice in terms of e-Government implementation. The researcher therefore accomplishes that this study extends to the knowledge in the aspect of e-Government implementation from organisational perspectives, Government-to-Employee (G2E); thus contributing to the Information System (and e-Government implementation) literature through reviewing the range of studies using a wider multi-level and multi-method approach. This includes combining institutional theory with other models. This enables development of a holistic conceptual model for implementing e-Government, including a subset model for e-Government key actors and their main activities throughout the development life cycle.

Employee relationship planning (ERPII)

Gunasegaran, A. January 2009 (has links)
By triangulation of three longitudinal case studies with change leader practitioner survey, this research identified the following seven generative Employee Relationship Planning (ERPII) management strategies: 1. People Strategy 2. Capital Strategy 3. Information Strategy 4. Experience Strategy 5. Opportunity Strategy 6. Crisis Strategy 7. Result/Reward Strategy ERPII management strategies may facilitate development of organisational cultures where management enables employees to become aware of relevant capital, information, experience, opportunity and crisis situations to attain the result/reward of their collaboration and participation in business process reengineering activities for continuous improvements. These ERPI management strategies may facilitate practical application of current approaches in positive leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Spiritual Intelligence, Appreciative Inquiry and Kaizen.

Management, restructuring and industrial relations : organizational change within the United Kingdom broadcasting industry, 1979-2002

Quinn, Brian J. January 2007 (has links)
In the past decade researchers began to remedy a literature deficit in the study of broadcasting institutions – addressing in particular the issues of labour process, restructuring and industrial relations. This thesis which considers management change, industrial relations and restructuring within the United Kingdom (‘UK’) broadcasting industry employs a case study format with a view to highlighting the variations of industry (macro) and firm (micro) based restructuring. Organizational change was not a uniform process throughout the UK broadcasting industry and significantly different strategies were developed by management within the two main terrestrial broadcasters – in particular in attempting to fundamentally alter the organization of programme production. The labour process and experience of employees and owner-managers within the independent production sector was also distinguishable as between the two main UK terrestrial broadcasters. In order to provide a theoretical underpinning to the empirical studies which form the centrepiece of this thesis, the four themes of contemporary labour process theory are explored. These contributions are included because examinations undertaken of labour processes have resulted in critical insights as to the nature of management and labour relationships. Together with firm based organizational restructuring of the broadcasting industry, the past 25 years have seen very significant regulatory change consequent on a variety of legislative initiatives and which are set out. The case studies begin with the wide-scale restructuring of industrial relations within the Independent Television (‘ITV’) sector since 1979 (Chapter 4). The second case study (Chapter 5) is concerned with the implementation of a set of managerial strategies aimed at reshaping the labour processes within the Central Scotland ITV franchise – Scottish Television Ltd. (‘STV’). Chapter 6 deals with the implementation of new working practices and what might be described as an attack on employee identity within BBC Scotland. The restructuring of the Corporation along quasi-commercial lines with specific reference to the employment of the directorate (distinct business units) system is examined. The final case study (Chapter 7) is an examination of the independent production sector tracing the emergence of a group of Producer Owners (independent production company owners) who emerged during the first half of the 1990s and who have since become a significant force in British television production. This study also traces the development of the career and networking labour of the group of individuals employed on short-term contracts by the independent production company owners.

[en] MANAGERIAL OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESS TO INSTITUTE A CHANGE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT IN A MINING COMPANY / [pt] UMA VISÃO GERENCIAL DO PROCESSO DE CONSTITUIÇÃO DE UMA ÁREA DE GESTÃO DE MUDANÇAS EM UMA EMPRESA DO SETOR DE MINERAÇÃO

TATIANA DE JESUS SOUSA 23 November 2012 (has links)
[en] The objective of the present study is to identify, describe and understand the strategic process of constitution of a Change Management department for the SAP, type of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning System), implementation project of a major company of the mining sector. Thereunto, eleven managers of the project were interviewed. Also, documents from other SAP implementation projects held by this same company and documents from the current project were analyzed. The Speech Analysis methodology was adopted, which allowed the creation of six analysis categories: (1) Importance of the project; (2) Success factors; (3) Importance of the change management department; (4) Implementation phases; (5) Change management department creation process and (6) Dealing with the change. The results achieved by the interviews analysis suggest that the lack of involvement of the leadership on the previous projects; the complete or partial outsourcing of some activities (i.e. Change management) for a third party service provider and the misunderstanding of the importance of the project by some company’s business units were key factors for the decision of constituting a specific Change management department made of the own company’s employees, besides other strategic changes done on the current project.

Estudo de fatores que influenciam a mudança na contabilidade gerencial com enfoque na implementação do balanced scorecard - estudos multicasos / Study of factors that influence the change in the managerial accounting with approach in the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard ? multi-cases study

Silva, Lucileni Pereira da 24 April 2007 (has links)
This study aims to identify if, in companies where the variable contextual are more favorable to the change in the managerial accounting is higher the level of sophistication of the implemented BSC. Therefore, the studies of cases were done in four companies of which had implemented this tool. In these companies the characteristics of the implemented BSC are analyzed and how these are linked and established to the changeable contextual ones: the organizational characteristics and the factors that speed up or decelerate the process of management accounting change, were both analyzed under the perspective of the contingency approach. Although it is not possible to generalize the results, the development of the study of cases allowed to confirm the relation between such contextual variables and the level of sophistication of the BSC implemented in the studied companies. For the organizational characteristics, it is observed that, in general, as the level of competition and the growth of the company increases, more sophisticated are the implemented BSC. However there is only one exception; the BSC that is more developed was obtained by other factors. In the factors of stimulating changes, three factors stood out, allowing excellent comparisons to the types of BSC implemented in the companies: the specific objectives for change, the external necessities and the engagement of the high level management. The analysis of the degree of communication incorporated to the study of the cases showed that, in companies where the BSC is more developed, it has greater degree of communication of the strategy.
