No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao Adrielli.pdf: 5370662 bytes, checksum: 4e167ff0f119f9298b4d7ed2791baa06 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-08-29 / The present work aims to study the performance of concrete with regard to the action of chloride ions, evaluating the influence of both mineral additions and water/binder ratio (w/b), considering kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the corrosive phenomenon. A experimental research was carried out considering the following variables: the presence of mineral additions in partial substitution to the cement weight (10% of silica fume; 25% of fly ash; 10%, 20% and 30% of metakaolin) and the water/binder ratio (0,40 and 0,55). Thus, cubic concrete test specimens were produced, in addition to cylindrical test specimens for concrete characterization in relation to the compressive strength, specific mass, void ratio and capillary water absorption. After 645 days of casting, the cubic concrete test specimens were submitted to the chlorides attack during 308 days, totality 44 weekly cycles of immersion in chlorides aggressive solution. They were monitored, throughout this period, by means of techniques, such as: the concrete electric resistivity, the half-cell potential, the polarization resistance and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. At the end of the experiment, visual inspections of reinforcing steels allowed to observe their superficial aspects after attack. As general result, it was gotten that the incorporation of mineral additions to the concretes promoted significant profits in all the evaluated properties, evidencing the beneficial effect of these additions in concretes exposed to aggressive conditions, specially in those in which there are chloride ions. In this direction, the statistical analysis has shown evidences that concretes with silica fume and metakaolin achieved the best results of electrical resistivity. In relation to the half-cell potentials, the reference concrete (without mineral additions) presented the worst performance, with an indication of despassivation in the reinforcing steels accentuated fall in the values of resistance of polarization with the time, proving the susceptibility of these systems to the action of chlorides. The concrete with mineral additions did not present depassivation of the reinforcing steels meaning that these systems possess great durability and service life in relation to those without mineral additions / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o desempenho de concretos quanto à ação de íons cloreto, avaliando tanto a interveniência das adições minerais incorporadas ao concreto quanto da relação água/aglomerante (a/ag), considerando aspectos cinéticos e termodinâmicos do fenômeno corrosivo.

Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T15:18:22Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao parte 1 Pammila Japiassu.pdf: 6094546 bytes, checksum: 79242a16f08c8b4ca8b8d6b2112d1cda (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-05-16 / The historical glazed tiles facades are an important luso-brazilian cultural expression that must be conserved and preserved. The bonding loss of glazed tiles to laying mortars is one of the most critical pathologic manifestations of this kind of coating. However, despite this importance, there‟s still a lack of studies about the bonding mechanism between this historical components. Accordingly, this dissertation proposed to perform an experimental and exploratory research, which the main objective is to give some contribution to the understanding of the ancient tile‟s bonding mechanism to the aerial lime-based mortar of historical buildings facade. For this, were analyzed samples of facade historical ceramic coating, between the late XIX and early XX century, of Ovar‟s buildings, in Portugal. In order to reproduce the historical bonding mechanism, were also analyzed ceramic coating applied in laboratory studying mortars of rehabilitation. In the first stage, were analyzed the ceramic coating and the mortars historic of three cases, as well was performed the interface‟s study between this two materials. In the second stage, were produced ceramic coatings in laboratory using tiles (similar to the historical ones) and four types of mortars of rehabilitation, composed by aerial lime, metakaolin and sand, varying the content of pozolana in 0%, 5%, 10% e 15%, replacement of lime in volume. In this stage, were characterized the tile, the raw materials of the mortar, and mortar in the fresh and hardened. Finally, yet was studied the interface between the glazed tile and the mortar of rehabilitation, in order to compare this one to the historical one. It was observed in the analysis of the historical ceramic coatings that the values of bond strength and of extension of bond were more related to the agregates granulometry than to the binder/aggregate of the laying mortars. In the case of the ceramic coatings molded in laboratory, it was found the influence of the metakaolin content in the rehabilitation mortars in bond strength. It was also observed a possible influence of the shape of the tile‟s back surface in the bonding of ceramic coatings. By the analysis in the SEM was identified the morphology of the products of carbonation and possible pozzolanic reactions in the studied mortars, that contributing to the increased bond strength of these materials.

Utilisation of industrial by-products in water treatment:carbon-and silicate-based materials as adsorbents for metals and sulphate removal

Runtti, H. (Hanna) 17 June 2016 (has links)
Abstract Pollutant (such as metals and sulphate) contamination exists in the wastewaters of many industries, including mining operations, metal plating facilities, and tanneries. Adsorption is one of the most commonly used processes for the removal of pollutants from waters and wastewaters due to its high efficiency and simple operation. Activated carbon is the most frequently used adsorbent material, although its high cost inhibits its widespread use in wastewater treatment. Therefore, there is a need to develop other adsorbents from alternative inexpensive raw materials such as locally available industrial and mineral waste and by-products. The aim of this thesis was to study the possibility of using industrial waste materials such as carbon residue, metakaolin, blast-furnace slag and analcime as an inexpensive sorbent for iron, copper, nickel, arsenic, antimony and sulphate removal from aqueous solutions. To enhance their adsorption capacity, different chemical treatments (i.e. activation, modification, geopolymerisation) were performed. As a result, the level of removal of iron, copper and nickel by carbon residue and zinc chloride activated carbon residue was higher than that by the commercial activated carbon. Iron chloride modified carbon residue was the most effective sorbent material for sulphate removal when compared to the other studied chemically modified/activated carbon residues. Blast-furnace slag and metakaolin geopolymers as well as their raw materials, were examined for the simultaneous removal of nickel, arsenic and antimony from the spiked mine effluent. In the case of blast-furnace slag, geopolymerisation clearly increased the efficiency of nickel, arsenic and antimony removal to a beneficial level. The barium chloride modified blast-furnace-slag geopolymer was a very efficient sorbent material for sulphate removal and it could thus be a technically feasible sulphate sorbent for wastewater treatment (e.g. in the mining industry in applications in which very low sulphate levels are desired). Barium chloride modified acid washed analcime could also be a potential sorbent for sulphate removal. Tämän vuoksi on tarvetta kehittää vaihtoehtoisia adsorbenttimateriaaleja edullisista raaka-aineista.

Geopolymery na bázi elektrárenských popílků a cihelného střepu / Geopolymers based on fly ashes and brick body

Řezník, Bohuslav January 2014 (has links)
In line with the current focus on utilizing side products of various production processes, this dissertation thesis analyzes the process of alkali activation of particular side products: fly ash and brick fragments. This activation produces geopolymeric materials widely used in civil engineering. The thesis aims to optimize the geopolymerization process so that the resulting geopolymer is both ecologically and economically viable. To that end, the thesis studies the course of geopolymeric reaction between the alkali activator and fly ash from: (i) the Chvaletice power plant, (ii) the Dětmarovice power plant, and (iii) biomass combustion, as well as (iv) fluid fly ash from the Hodonín power plant. All experiments of geopolymeric reaction have focused on the factors influencing the synthesis of geopolymers—that is: composition of the alkali activator, the ratio of alumino-silicate to the activator, and the impact of temperature on structure of the synthesized geopolymer. Further, the thesis analyzed the synthesized polymer’s microstructure, phase composition, resistance against corrosive conditions, and compressive strength, as well as mechanical-fracture properties of selected fly-ash geopolymers. The thesis finds that the most suitable for geopolymeric synthesis appears to be the fly ash from the Chvaletice power plant in which case the obtained geopolymers showed best properties in the studied areas. The fly ash from the Dětmarovice power plant, biomass fly ash, and fluid fly ash have failed to reach acceptable properties. Separately, the thesis studies the geopolymerization of brick body that could be suitable input for alkali activation. The geopolymers synthesized from brick fragments resulted in materials of supperior mechanical strength. A mixed use of fly ash and brick fragments failed to show a synergetic effect. Properties of the resulting geopolymers have been inferior to the properties of geopolymers produced using just fly ash or just brick body.

Vývoj kompozitů na bázi anorganických pojiv určených pro extrémní aplikace / The development of composites based on inorganic binders designed for the extreme applications

Janoušek, Petr January 2013 (has links)
The topic of this master's thesis is the development of composite materials based on inorganic binders for use in extreme conditions. It means especially geopolymeric or alkali activated materials (AAM) based composites. The theoretical part of this thesis summarizes knowledges about the development and use of alkali-activated materials, their structure and mechanisms of their formation. It also deals with the applicable raw materials for AAM and their exciters, which are in particular water glass and sodium hydroxide. There also have been a summary of the effects of high temperatures and chemicals on the mechanical properties of AAM and the requirements of standard EN 1504-3 for repairing materials. The task of the practical part was to develop a repair mortar for concrete structures based on AAM so that its production was as simple as possible, ie one-component materials. Gradually six recipes have been develeoped. Test specimens made from these recipes have been putted to selected tests according to the requirements of ČSN EN 1504-3.

Vývoj vysokopevnostních betonů definovaných vlastností s využitím druhotných surovin / Development of high-strength concrete defined properties with the use of secondary raw materials

Ondráček, Michal Unknown Date (has links)
Civil engineering development is connected with the application of new construction methods and the development of new building materials. Concrete, as one of the basic building materials, is part of this development. A major turning point in the development of concrete and its properties occurred with the use of new, more efficient plasticizing additives. This allowed to produce concrete with lower water cement ratio, while increasing the strength of concrete. Gradually, the compressive strength of concrete boundary has moved by several levels, when there are currently commonly used concrete with strength of about 100 N/mm2 and with the special methods of concrete production strength range from 250 to 300 N/mm2. A negative aspect of the development of (ultra) high-strength concrete is their energy and economic demands. A characteristic feature of high-strength concrete is a high content of cement and very fine admixtures, especially silica fume. One way to improve the economics of these types of concrete is the application of cheaper admixture based on industrial waste. The content of this work is the observation and description of the properties of high-strength concrete and reactive powder concrete, in which the admixtures were based on industrial waste were applied. Part of this work is the comparison of economic parameters for individual types of concrete.
