Nonlinear Analysis in Investment and Trade across Taiwan Starit

Wu, Jia-ling 16 July 2008 (has links)
In this paper, we examine the relationship between outward FDI and trades across Taiwan Strait during the period 1994Q4 to 2007Q4. We modify the export function, import function and trade function by including outward FDI variable to reflect the effect of bilateral trade between Taiwan and China. Empirical evidences indicate that the coefficient is significantly crucial to the long-run relationship. Due to the failure of a linear error-correction model (ECM) in describing the dynamics of exports and trades, we apply a nonlinear ECM to examine its dynamics and find supporting to the appropriateness of the nonlinear model empirically. Furthermore, outward FDI in percentages of Taiwan GDP was found increasing exports and decreasing imports across Taiwan Strait in percentages of Taiwan GDP. Then, the results also indicate the possibility of a positive effect of the ratio of China GDP to Taiwan GDP on the ratio of import to Taiwan GDP and a negative effect of the ratio of export to Taiwan GDP. It possibly offsets the balance of trade surplus at the same time. Finally, the bilateral trade across Taiwan Strait raises while the FDI ratio is increasing. China becomes the most important trade partner to Taiwan in recent years.

A Study of RZ-DPSK Modulation Scheme upon Long-haul Optical Fiber Transmission System

Shu, Seng-Sheng 22 July 2008 (has links)
Long-haul optical fiber communication system is an important infrastructure to support the latest broadband communication in the world. It is important to study a technology to improve the performance of such system, and the Return-to-Zero Differential Phase Shift Keying (RZ-DPSK) modulation attracts much attention because of its improved long distance transmission performance. One important technology of the current long-haul optical fiber communication system is the dispersion map, and it is widely deployed for already installed undersea optical fiber communication system in the world. Recently, a new dispersion map that was totally different from the map used for already deployed system was proposed, and it demonstrated advantageous performance of the long-haul RZ-DPSK transmission. Even though, the reason of the performance improvement is not investigated, and it is important to clarify the physical mechanism of the performance improvement, because it will contribute to improve the system design of the long-haul optical fiber communication systems in near future. In this master thesis, the performance of the RZ-DPSK format in the long-haul transmission system is studied. Both computer simulations and experiments are conducted to confirm the effects of various factors in the long-haul RZ-DPSK transmission system. From the theoretical study, it is pointed out that the Self-Phase Modulation (SPM) played a significant role to degrade the transmission performance of the conventional map, while it does not cause so significant degradation in the new map. The effects of the SPM and the Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) with the conventional map are investigated through the experimental study.

This article adopt ¡¨nonlinear cointegrating regression¡¨ model, which was published by Bae and DE Jong in 2007, to conduct related empirical research on one of the pricing theories of futures-Cost of carry theory. Since cost of carry theory is based on the assumption that the market belongs to ¡¨perfect market¡¨, the test for cost of carry theory is accompanied by the test of the efficiency of the market. This article takes Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index ¡BTaiwan Stock Exchange Electronic Sector Index and Taiwan Stock Exchange Finance Sector Index as our researching target and the final result exhibits that the cost of carry theory is mostly significant in the future market of Taiwan .

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of metal-dielectric multilayer structures

Owens, Daniel Thomas 01 September 2010 (has links)
The object of the present research is to design and fabricate metal-dielectric thin film multilayer structures that make use of the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of Ag for efficient nonlinear absorption for sensor protection. These structures employ structural resonances to overcome the challenges of reflection and absorption that limit access to this large NLO response. The research consists of three parts: first, we present a comprehensive analysis of the contributions to the nonlinear optical response of Ag. Second, we present a systematic investigation of the linear optical properties of Metal-Dielectric Photonic Band-Gap (MDPBG) structures, including optimization of the structure for a particular transmittance spectrum. Third, we study the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Induced Transmission Filters (ITFs). Each of these parts includes experimental results backed by modeling and simulation.
