Distal and proximal relation factors, emotional capabilities and psychological health outcomes in substance usersMaka, Zoe January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examined certain distal and proximal relational factors and emotional capabilities of individuals in therapeutic programs in Greece. The three studies aimed to extend existing work by examining links between distal (child abuse reports) and proximal (adult attachment, social support) relation factors with psychological health outcomes of substance users in addiction treatment programs. The results from the three studies supported the view that: a) distal (childhood maltreatment) and proximal (attachment organization) relational factors are important predictors of substance users’ well-being; b) proximal factors (anxious attachment) mediate effects of abusive experiences; c) emotional capabilities and specifically regulatory processes have a prominent role as mediators of relational factors on substance users’ well-being.

[en] THE CHARISMA OF COMMANDER: A STUDY OF PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AMONG MILITARIES OF BRAZILIAN ARMY FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE SYMBOLIC POWER, OF THE DOCILE BODIES AND OF THE TOTAL INSTITUTIONS / [pt] O CARISMA DO COMANDANTE: UM ESTUDO DAS RELAÇÕES PESSOAIS DOS MILITARES DO EXÉRCITO BRASILEIRO SOB O ENFOQUE DO PODER SIMBÓLICO, DOS CORPOS DÓCEIS E DAS INSTITUIÇÕES TOTAISEVERTON ARAUJO DOS SANTOS 02 October 2012 (has links)
[en] It examines the processes of socialization, and their continuous
reinforcements, which are permanently submitted members of the Brazilian Army
through inter-subjective relations that are developed in the day-to-day life in the
barracks. The theoretical approach is the symbolic power of Pierre Bourdieu, the
docile bodies of Michel Foucault and the total institutions of Erving Goffman.
The methodological instrument chosen, inter-subjective relationships, regards to
interpersonal relationships or the most trivial personal relationships developed in
everyday life of common military. The universe especially observed in the
research is the group composed of officers trained by the Military Academy of
Agulhas Negras - AMAN. People and their relationships, their feelings, are the
central aspects of research, aspects of which we tried to infer the values, beliefs,
attitudes, behaviors and opinions that are fundamental to the social group, or
regarded as essential for field of study. It examines in particular the ways in which
they are internalized and maintained in the member of the military group, often
imperceptibly, its most fundamental features, through the development of their
daily relationships more common and trivial.

Ties undone : a gendered and racial analysis of the impact of the 1885 Northwest Rebellion in the Saskatchewan districtMillions, Jodi Erin 03 December 2007
The Northwest Rebellion, in comparison to other North American civil wars, was short-lived and geographically contained, but for the people who lived through it, the residents of the Saskatchewan district, 1885 was a real and a frightening ordeal. By exploring micro-relations at the individual, family and community levels, and focusing on the connections between residents and ways that they related to each other, a portrait of the region emerges that reveals that Euro-Canadians and Aboriginals were linked to each other in many, and often subtle ways before the uprising. Drawing on personal papers, government and Hudson's Bay Company records, and oral histories, this study shows that race and gender were determining factors in how white, First Nations, Metis and mixed-blood men and women experienced both the conflict itself and its aftennath. Furthermore, its impact on residents' lives and society in the Saskatchewan territory was considerable and the effects long-lasting. Barriers, both physical and social, were created and solidified, and, although groups were still linked by the same family ties that bound them before the spring of 1885, the ways that they viewed each other changed after the rebellion. Mistrust and hostility that had not existed before, or that had been repressed, broke the bonds that connected racial groups, and sometimes families. The new order in Saskatchewan was one in which Euro-Canadians held power, and Aboriginals were second-class citizens barred from mainstream society. The rebellion accelerated white domination of the region, and acted as a catalyst for the racial divisions evident in Saskatchewan in the twentieth century.
