A numerical investigation of the interactions between adjacent cooling tower plumes

Bornoff, Robin B. January 1997 (has links)
Cooling tower plume rise, dilution and dispersion is investigated using a numerical model. Both single and double sources are considered. The main aim of the investigation is concerned with comparison of the computational results to existing wind tunnel experimental data as well as simple empirical rise height formula. Analysis of the interaction of adjacent sources, and subsequent rise augmentation compared to that of a single source, is a central theme of the work. A full-scale hybrid mechanical cooling tower is modelled as a surface mounted cuboid block 20 m high with an internal development duct of 10 m diameter. Both jet and moderately buoyant plume type sources are studied. Two exit velocity ratios are also considered. An oncoming atmospheric boundary is modelled with an associated logarithmic velocity profile and profiles of turbulence kinetic energy and length scale. Two double source orientations, tandem and side-by-side with respect to the oncoming cross wind, are studied. Physical symmetry is utilised and so only half of the domain is modelled. Both the small-scale (wind tunnel) and full-scale were modelled. The small-scale work used combinations of a low Reynolds number k-e turbulence model and both hybrid and QUICK discretisation schemes. The high Reynolds numbers encountered in the fullscale allowed the use of a number of different turbulence models, namely the standard k-e model, the RNG k-e model and a differential flux model, combined again with the hybrid and QUICK discretisation schemes. The results of a number of sensitivity tests showed that plume rise in this case was not sensitive to the turbulence model constant C3 or to source turbulence levels. A decrease in the turbulent Prandtl number led to a marked increase in the turbulent diffusion of the thermal plume. Horizontal plume spreading was underpredicted in both small and full-scales compared to the experimental data. Plume rise and dilution was, in the majority of cases, predicted accurately compared to both the experimental data and also to rise heights given by simple empirical relationships. Generally, the choice of discretisation scheme was a more important factor than choice of turbulence model. Interaction of side-by-side plumes was dominated by the interaction of the rotating vortex pairs within the plumes. A tandem source arrangement led to early merging and efficient rise enhancement. Merging into a single type plume occurred sooner with an decrease in exit velocity ratio, R.

Oxyfuel-Technologie: Von der Grundlagenforschung zum Großkraftwerk mit CO2-Abscheidung

Löser, Jan, Hellfritsch, Stefan, Weigl, Sebastian, Wilhelm, Ronald, Klemm, Marco 15 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The ‘CO2-free’ power station is a frequently encountered keyword in the media. This paper highlights the efforts which are being undertaken at TU Dresden to avoid carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and, instead, to store it safely under ground. The handling of combustion with pure oxygen, simulation of the processes and cleaning of the exhaust gases are steps which need to be linked into a functional process chain for further evaluation. It is shown that this research is necessary in order to keep ‘CO2-free’ electricity affordable.

Pleskūnas, Gytis 04 August 2011 (has links)
Together with the increasing price of the fossil fuel, construction of wind power-stations and their parks as well as their connection to electrical networks has become a relevant topic. In Lithuania, wind power-stations and their parks have been constructed and connected not only in the seaside. The aim of my Work is to analyze possibilities of the wind power-stations’ park in the Baltic sea in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, their connection to electrical networks and influencing factors. The Work analyses the relevant possibility of constructing the Baltic park of the sea wind power-stations. Evaluation of generator circuit breaker applications / J.F. Fourie.

Fourie, Johannes Frederick January 2010 (has links)
The use of generator circuit breakers in power stations was investigated and evaluated. A feasibility study to determine if the additional capital cost required, when using a generator circuit breaker in a power station could be justified by the advantages it provides. The background to the study is provided through a technology and literature survey. Included in the technology review and the literature study is information on interruption mediums, the historic developments of circuit breakers and generator circuit breaker application theory. This data was used to determine the practicality of using a specific interruption medium within a generator circuit breaker application. The requirements of generator circuit breakers were determined and used to evaluate the interruption mediums in question. To ensure practical results, commonly used layouts were used to determine the effect of using a generator circuit breaker on the reliability, availability and the mean time to repair of a power station electrical distribution layout. Furthermore, the effect of the protection on the generator and generator transformer was evaluated. It was found that increased selectivity of the protection system by using a generator circuit breaker limits the extent of equipment damage in case of failure. Practical layouts were used to determine the effect on reliability. The analysis was conducted using assumed values of operational costs to determine the cost incurred through the change in reliability of the power station. By adding a generator circuit breaker, the station transformer and associated equipment is regarded as back-up or redundant equipment. This increases the reliability of the power station dramatically and limits the risk of income lost due to failures. The full evaluation included the estimation of the capital investment costs and the impact that the additional cost has on the operational requirements of a power station. The study determined that the capital cost required to use a generator circuit breaker results in no additional income for a power station. Through the increased protection, higher availability and the possible omission of power station ancillary equipment, the use of generator circuit breakers will result in more power being delivered and more income generated by a power station. The study proved that the generator circuit breaker is a critical part of a power station layout and is a necessary capital requirement to ensure the sustainability of the power station. / Thesis (M.Ing.
