NIMBY is widely used acronym for people's unwilingness to house noxious facilities in their immediate neighborhood. People feel that they are somewhat and they expect to be compensated for this. Goal of this thesis is to evaluate influence of monetary compensations on people's willingness to accept these facilities. Evaluates effects of Crowding Theory, extristic and intristic motivations on willingness to accept these facilities. Used method was qualitative analysis in form of controlled interviews with key stakeholders (mayor and town citizens). Author tries to evaluate if the NIMBY effect is the main reason for generally bad acceptance of this facilities. This thesis explores the NIMBY effect on construction of one of these facilities in town Chotíkov with a view on the gradual development of view throughout the population of this town.

Aldrig tidigare har så många människor sökt asyl i Sverige som de senaste åren. Det har medfört ett ökat behov av asylboenden runtom i landet. Etableringar av sociala verksamheter brukar förorsaka grannprotester. Retoriken i sådana grannprotester brukar beskrivas med hjälp av två akronymer: NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) och NIABY (Not In Anyone’s Yard). I NIMBY-retoriken kritiseras inte den etablerade verksamheten som sådan, endast lokaliseringen. I NIABY-retoriken däremot riktas kritiken mot verksamhetens art, det vill säga kritiken är principiell. I denna studie undersöks hur retoriken ser ut bland grannskap där etableringar av asylboenden har varit aktuella i och med den rådande flyktingsituationen. Metodiskt bygger studien på en innehållsanalys av massmediarapporter kring protester mot asylboenden. Studien visar att NIMBY-retorik är betydligt vanligare förekommande än NIABY-retorik. Samtidigt uppmärksammas att gränsen mellan NIMBY och NIABY ofta är flytande. En viktig teoretisk slutsats är att begreppen NIMBY och NIABY är nödvändiga, men inte tillräckliga, för att förstå grannprotester mot etableringar av sociala verksamheter.

The rebuilding of Slussen is in this thesis used as a case study on citizens’ emotionally engagement. The purpose is to investigate why people get emotionally engaged and whether it has any effect on the planning process. The aim is to contribute to a discussion on planning where emotions play a larger role than today. Two questions are asked and answered: 1) Why do citizens get emotionally engaged in the Slussenproject? 2) In what way have the citizens’ emotions and engagement been considered and used in the Slussen project? Interviews with “ordinary” citizens and “professionals” are conducted along with a supporting analysis of written material connected to the case. Theories of emotions and protests seen from different angles are used in order to uncover citizens’ motives for engagement. Sherry Arnstein’s Ladder of citizen participation is used in order to make clear what the significance of citizens’ engagement in the Slussen case has. The result shows emotionally engagement based on protests against someone or something where the dismissal of the others’ knowledge of Slussen play a big role. Citizens’ emotions and engagement are seen as something positive and the planning process is affected but only within certain limits decided by the municipality.

Under 2015 kom fem gånger så många ensamkommande barn till Sverige jämfört med året innan. Detta innebar en stor påfrestning för Sveriges kommuner och för de Hem för vård och boende (HVB-hem) som ansvarar för ensamkommande barn och ungdomar. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur denna belastning påverkade HVB-hemmens verksamhet för ensamkommande barn och att studera de informationsstrategier som används vid etablering av hemmen. Hur har grannar informerats om verksamheterna och hur har de reagerat? Metodiskt bygger studien på individuella semistrukturerade intervjuer och en skriftlig intervju via e-post. Personerna som intervjuades är verksamma vid HVB-hem i olika kommuner i Jönköpings län. Resultatet visar att de två största utmaningarna för HVB-hemmens verksamhet för ensamkommande barn handlade om att få tag i lämpliga lokaler och kompetent personal. De två vanligaste informationsstrategierna som användes var informationsmöten och öppet hus. Fyra kommuner valde dock att hålla en lägre profil och avstå från information till grannar. Vidare visar studien att respondenterna överlag är positivt överraskade över det stora engagemanget de mött från allmänheten och att sådana reaktioner är vanligare än oro. Resultatet analyseras delvis utifrån NIMBY-begreppet och kopplingar görs till de två informationsstrategierna, samverkansansatsen och den autonoma ansatsen. Dessutom belyses skillnader och likheter i relation till tidigare forskning.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka den lokala uppfattningen i Ockelbo gentemot etableringen av en vindkraftspark i näromgivningen samt vad som ligger bakom Upplands Väsbys val att bygga ett vindkraftverk på annan ort. Resultaten visar att NIMBY-åsikter inte ligger bakom Upplands Väsbys val samt att attityden som återges bland de boende och kommuntjänstemännen i Ockelbo kommun präglas av en positiv inställning mot vindkraftsetableringen i deras närmiljö. Den positiva inställningen grundar sig främst på utbetalningen av bygdepengen samt att vindkraften symboliserar och innebär miljövänlig energi.

I researched the strategies that city officials and housing developers used to address NIMBY concerns about low income housing developments. I conducted interview research with planning commission members, their staffs, and housing developers from two cities. I wanted to understand what strategies the interviewees employed to address NIMBY concerns, if best practices were used during the planning process, how well those practices were followed, how effective those approaches used were in a real world setting, and inquire about alternative methods. The findings indicated that population density and median income were the relevant factors regarding NIMBY related issues. Also, traffic concerns, classism, and ageism were found to be prevalent NIMBY concerns. The strategies used included early engagement of residents, studies being conducted to identify credible issues, and the use of the judicial system.
