The influence of conflicting role obligations on nontraditional student baccalaureate degree attainment

Guastella, Rosaria 20 December 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to investigate the phenomenon of the conflicting roles, such as parent, spouse, employee, caregiver, and community member/volunteer, associated with the lives of nontraditional college students and to reveal how these conflicting role obligations influence these students' persistence toward the attainment of an undergraduate degree. This study provides a brief history of adult education in the United States as well as the study context, a continuing studies division of a privately endowed research institution located in the southern United States. The participants in this study were nontraditional students who were also recent graduates of this continuing studies unit. This study drew upon the literature of nontraditional students in higher education, as well as literature on role theory, adult development theory, adult learning theory, and student persistence theory. This study used a phenomenological qualitative approach as a means of discovering the lived experiences of nontraditional students as these experiences relate to the conflicting roles of nontraditional students and their decision to persist toward the attainment of a bachelor's degree. Several important findings were discovered. In order to negotiate their conflicting roles, these students used several strategies as a means of helping them to balance their roles. This study also found several motivational factors that prompted nontraditional students to pursue a bachelor's degree at this time in their lives. The obstacles and challenges that these students confronted were also revealed, and in order to overcome these obstacles and challenges these students relied on several support systems. The reputation and prestige of this university was also found to be an important factor in the students' decision to attend college at this stage in their lives. Additionally, the various forms of assistance that this continuing studies unit provided encouraged students to persist.

A book as part of culture: The perception fo books by the generation Y and their representation in the media

Krumphanzl, Filip January 2019 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to clarify the status of books in the current Czech culture using scientific methods. Since there are many possible ways to achieve this widely defined goal, it was necessary to choose certain methods (and therefore an overall angle of the examination). Two specific methods were selected - a questionnaire for members of Generation Y and media analysis of culture sections of the Czech daily newspapers, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo during the months of June and December of 2017. Theoretical background, description of the methods and explanation of all the key terms are part of the theoretical section. The objective of the questionnaire is to map reading preferences and habits of young readers. The questions are focused on qualitative and also quantitative aspects of book reading. The overarching objective of the media analysis is to provide an accurate image the media paint about books. This will be achieved by thorough examination of all the articles that mention them. Just like with the questionnaire, qualitative and quantitative aspects will be tracked.

Análise da ação condicionadora de substâncias cosméticas adicionadas em alisante capilar à base de tioglicolato de amônio / Analysis of the conditioning action of cosmetic substances added in capillary straightener based on ammonium thioglycolate

Dias, Tania Cristina de Sa 05 October 2004 (has links)
Chemical hair relaxing is the most common used method to improve combability and styling on afro-ethnic hair. The hair is basically composed of three parts: cuticle, cortex and medulla. The main basic element is a protein, the keratin. The treatment with an alkaline reducing agent and/or an oxidant agent causes modifications in this structure, and related damages that can occur in the superficial layer (cuticle) through ali the fiber, reaching the cortex and modifying the physical-chemical properties of the hair. In that case, the hair becomes more fragile, it has no shine, gets rough and it is very difficulty to comb and to detangle it. Conditioning agents can improve the physical and sensorial attributes of the hair, thus allowing it to become more resistant and making it easier to take care of. In this study a hair straightener cream-base with ammonium thioglycolate was prepared and the selected conditioning agents added at the moment of the use. The straightener cream-base was submitted to the physical stability study for two months. The tests had been carried through: quantification of protein loss of albumine equivalent, using the Lowry method modified by Peterson; the combability and rupture traction. The results have indicated that the addition of Jojoba oil and silicones as Lauryl PEG/PPG-18/18 methicone; and Cyclopentasiloxane (and) PEG-12 dimethicone crosspolymer, improve the physical-chemical and sensorial attributes of the afro-ethnic hair tresses, being indicated as conditioning agents that could be added in a hair straighteners cream formulation to help its care.

Reparação óssea sobre superfícies de titânio usinadas ou tratadas por óxido de titânio com exerto autógeno em bloco coberto por membrana reabsorvível / Healing of bone on machined or grit-blasted titanium surfaces with autogenous block graft covered with resorbable membrane

Hespanhol, Andre Micheletti 14 September 2009 (has links)
This study quantitatively analyzed the regenerated bone after guided bone regeneration technique using autogenous block graft with resorbable membrane and described its pattern around machined titanium or oxide grit-blasted titanium surfaces in periods of up to 150 days. Sixty male, adult, Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of two groups: machined titanium surface (U) or oxide grit-blasted titanium surface (T). A block graft was harvested from the rat calvarium with a trephine, laid and stabilized on the external cortex near the angle of the mandible with implants. A collagen membrane was adapted to completely cover the bone graft in both groups. The animals were euthanized at 0, 14, 21, 45 and 150 days after surgery. Nondecalcified histological sections were processed for each specimen and one section on the long axis of the implant was obtained. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out. Statistical analyses were carried out with a significance level of 5% and used Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. Results showed that the mean bone defect was DO-U = 604,13 m and DO-T = 585,90 m (p=0,720), and the mean mandible bone width was EL U = 257,29 m and EL-T = 243,57 m at zero hour. The mean graft width was reduced after 150 days for the T group as compared to group U (EET = 338,25 m and EE-U = 407,71 m) (p=0,003). No other significant differences between groups were observed. Regenerated bone was observed buccal to the bone graft after 21 days increasing in width after 150 days. The final mean mandible bone width after 150 days (ETTO-U = 1254,40 m and ETTO-T = 1141,85 m) achieved 4,8 (U) and 4,6 (T) times the original mandible width (p=0,48).
