Digital TV transmission monitoring system for heterogeneous converging networks.

Ian Korolkovas 15 August 2007 (has links)
The great evolution in the telecommunication systems related to the transmission of multimidia contents in the data communication networks and TV transmission, demands management solutions in which regards quality of end-to-end services. Taking this scenario into consideration, it is proposed in this work the definition and implementation of a solution to monitor media transmition that can be applied to heterogeneous network architectures. The feature of such networks is to integrate different data communication network technologies and telecommunication, involving legacy and modern networks, standarized and proprietary. This work presents a monitoring system for digital TV transmission in heterogeneous converging environments, that is, networks that use different technologies and transmission means for the Digital TV application. Therefore, key aspects for monitoring the digital TV flow in this kind of network are pointed out, as well as an analysis of the communication among the environment subsystems. The monitoring system has a defined architecture, based on the RTP Real-time Transport Protocol, to support the media transmission, such as audio and video, in heterogeneous networks. In order to validate this architecture, a prototype was implemented, as concept evidence, that obtains data from the management information base (MIB) RTP. The results generated by the prototype consolidate information related to the delay variation (jitter) in a management web interface through monitors distributed around the network.

Identificação e tratamento dos problemas de desempenho de redes de sensores expostas por arquiteturas orientadas a serviço / Identification and treatment of performance problems in sensor network exposed by service oriented architectures

Thiago Caproni Tavares 11 June 2014 (has links)
This PhD work aims to show that the abstraction of sensor networks, by means of service-oriented architectures, may impose some performance degradation, but it does not invalidate most applications. The methodology used to conduct this research consists of experiments that realize performance evaluations that analyze the behavior of different mechanisms of exposure of sensor networks, and evaluates the three major services of the Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) model interfaces. The results show significant differences in performance between the methods of considered access. The results also show that the generated overhead is not significant when compared with the frequency of obtaining observations of most wireless sensor networks. Aiming to minimize the performance issues imposed by the SWE framework, an architecture providing quality of service (QoS) called Sensor Web Architecture (SWARCH) is proposed and implemented. A case study of SWARCH demonstrates that it is possible to reduce response times when accessing the SWE services through a Broker that constantly monitors various service providers

Currently the access to a cloud computing environment is provided on demand, which allows providers to offer elasticity services to customers. Although the cloud allows an abstraction of the infrastructure behavior of the service providers (logical and physical), the fulfillment of the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) is challenging, because according with the demand and system configuration, the providers cannot ensure the customers requirements. There is a necessity of mechanisms that consider load balancing algorithms to provide an efficient load distribution in the available resources. However, the papers available in the literature do not efficiently address the problem of resource equation considering the customers requirements, because they consider a limited set of objectives to be analysed and fulfilled. Therefore, this master project aims to develop and evaluate algorithms available in the literature that address the combinatorial optimization and the multi-objective approach to handle the computational resources during the execution time, trying to optimize the efficient use of the resources available in the infrastructure and fulfill the service level agreements defined between the clients and providers.

The use of semantic web for selection of web services information in the UDDI registration an approach with quality service

Nakamura, Luis Hideo Vasconcelos 15 February 2012 (has links)
This master project addresses the use of Semantic Web resources in the selection of information about Web Services in UDDI registry (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration). This registry has the limitation of only storing functional information of Web Services. The nonfunctional information that includes the quality of service information (QoS - Quality of Service) is not covered and thus it is complicate to choose the best service for customers. In this project, the representation of the knowledge base with information about the providers, customers, agreements, services and quality of services has been made through an ontology. This ontology is used by the module UDOnt-Q (Universal Discovery with Ontology and QoS) that was designed to serve as a platform for search algorithms and composition of services with quality. Although the use of semantics can be adopted for the composition and automation of services, the focus of this work is to guarantee quality of service in Web Services. The developed algorithms employ SemanticWeb resources to classify and select the appropriate Web Services according to the quality information that is stored in the ontology. The module and the algorithms have been subjected to performance evaluations that revealed performance problems in relation to the approach taken during the ontology inference process. This process is used for classification of information of the elements present in the ontology. However, since the information was inferred, the process of search and selection services proved the viability of using the module and one of its selection algorithms

SDN-BASED MECHANISMS FOR PROVISIONING QUALITY OF SERVICE TO SELECTED NETWORK FLOWS

Alharbi, Faisal 01 January 2018 (has links)
Despite the huge success and adoption of computer networks in the recent decades, traditional network architecture falls short of some requirements by many applications. One particular shortcoming is the lack of convenient methods for providing quality of service (QoS) guarantee to various network applications. In this dissertation, we explore new Software-Defined Networking (SDN) mechanisms to provision QoS to targeted network flows. Our study contributes to providing QoS support to applications in three aspects. First, we explore using alternative routing paths for selected flows that have QoS requirements. Instead of using the default shortest path used by the current network routing protocols, we investigate using the SDN controller to install forwarding rules in switches that can achieve higher bandwidth. Second, we develop new mechanisms for guaranteeing the latency requirement by those applications depending on timely delivery of sensor data and control signals. The new mechanism pre-allocates higher priority queues in routers/switches and reserves these queues for control/sensor traffic. Third, we explore how to make the applications take advantage of the opportunity provided by SDN. In particular, we study new transmission mechanisms for big data transfer in the cloud computing environment. Instead of using a single TCP path to transfer data, we investigate how to let the application set up multiple TCP paths for the same application to achieve higher throughput. We evaluate these new mechanisms with experiments and compare them with existing approaches.

Transparently Improving Quality of Service of Modern Applications

Yang, Yudong January 2019 (has links)
Improving end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) in existing network systems is a fundamental problem, as it can be affected by many factors, including congestion, packet scheduling, attacks, and air-time allocation. This dissertation addresses QoS in two critical environments: home WiFi and cloud networks. In home networks, we focus on improving QoS over WiFi networks, the dominant means for home Internet access. Three major reasons for end-to-end QoS efforts fail in WiFi networks are its: 1) inherent wireless channel characteristics, 2) approach to access control of the shared broadcast channel, and 3) impact on transport layer protocols, such as TCP, that operate end-to-end, and over-react to the loss or delay caused by the single WiFi link. We present our cross-layer design, Virtual Wire, leveraging the philosophy of centralization in modern networking to address the problem at the point of entry/egress into the WiFi network. Based on network conditions measured from buffer sizes, airtime, and throughput, flows are scheduled to the optimal utility. Unlike most existing WiFi QoS approaches, our design only relies on transparent modifications, requiring no changes to the network (including link layer) protocols, applications, or user intervention. Through extensive experimental investigation, we show that our design significantly enhances the reliability and predictability of WiFi performance, providing a ``virtual wire''-like link to the targeted application. In cloud networks, we explore mechanisms to improve availability during DDoS attacks. The availability of cloud servers is impacted when excessive loads induced by DDoS attacks cause the servers to crash or respond too slowly to legitimate session requests. We model and analyze the effectiveness of a shuffling mechanism: the periodic, randomized re-assignment of users to servers. This shuffling mechanism not only complicates malicious users’ abilities to target specific servers but also, over time, allows a system to identify who the malicious users are. We design and evaluate improved classifiers which can, with statistical accuracy and well-defined levels of confidence, identify malicious users. We also propose and explore the effectiveness of a two-tiered system in which servers are partitioned in two, where one partition serves only ”filtered” users who have demonstrated non-malicious behavior. Our results show how shuffling with these novel classifiers can improve the QoS of the system, which is evaluated by the survival probability, the probability of a legitimate session not being affected by attacks.

Studies in agent based IP traffic congestion management in diffserv networks

Sankaranarayanan, Suresh January 2006 (has links)
The motivation for the research carried out was to develop a rule based traffic management scheme for DiffServ networks with a view to introducing QoS (Quality of Service). This required definition of rules for congestion management/control based on the type and nature of IP traffic encountered, and then constructing and storing these rules to enable future access for application and enforcement. We first developed the required rule base and then developed the software based mobile agents using the Java (RMI) application package, for accessing these rules for application and enforcement. Consequently, these mobile agents act as smart traffic managers at nodes/routers in the computer based communication network and manage congestion.

Provider recommendation based on client-perceived performance

Thio, Niko January 2009 (has links)
In recent years the service-oriented design paradigm has enabled applications to be built by incorporating third party services. With the increasing popularity of this new paradigm, many companies and organizations have started to adopt this technology, which has resulted in an increase of the number and variety of third party providers. With the vast improvement of global networking infrastructure, a large number of providers offer their services for worldwide clients. As a result, clients are often presented with a number of providers that offer services with the same or similar functionalities, but differ in terms of non-functional attributes (or Quality of Service – QoS), such as performance. In this environment, the role of provider recommendation has become more important - in assisting clients in choosing the provider that meets their QoS requirement. / In this thesis we focus on provider recommendation based on one of the most important QoS attributes – performance. Specifically, we investigate client-perceived performance, which is the application-level performance measured at the client-side every time the client invokes the service. This performance metric has the advantage of accurately representing client experience, compared to the widely used server-side metrics in the current frameworks (e.g. Service Level Agreement or SLA in Web Services context). As a result, provider recommendation based on this metric will be favourable from the client’s point of view. / In this thesis we address two key research challenges related to provider recommendation based on client-perceived performance - performance assessment and performance prediction. We begin by identifying heterogeneity factors that affect client-perceived performance among clients in a global Internet environment. We then perform extensive real-world experiments to evaluate the significance of each factor to the client-perceived performance. / From our finding on heterogeneity factors, we then develop a performance estimation technique to address performance assessment for cases where direct measurements are unavailable. This technique is based on the generalization concept, i.e. estimating performance based on the measurement gathered by similar clients. A two-stage grouping scheme based on the heterogeneity factors we identified earlier is proposed to address the problem of determining client similarity. We then develop an estimation algorithm and validate it using synthetic data, as well as real world datasets. / With regard to performance prediction, we focus on the medium-term prediction aspect to address the needs of the emerging technology requirements: distinguishing providers based on medium-term (e.g. one to seven days) performance. Such applications are found when the providers require subscription from their clients to access the service. Another situation where the medium-term prediction is important is in temporal-aware selection: the providers need to be differentiated, based on the expected performance of a particular time interval (e.g. during business hours). We investigate the applicability of classical time series prediction methods: ARIMA and exponential smoothing, as well as their seasonal counterparts – seasonal ARIMA and Holt-Winters. Our results show that these existing models lack the ability to capture the important characteristics of client-perceived performance, thus producing poor medium-term prediction. We then develop a medium-term prediction method that is specifically designed to account for the key characteristics of a client-perceived performance series, and to show that our prediction methods produce higher accuracy for medium-term prediction compared to the existing methods. / In order to demonstrate the applicability of our solution in practice, we developed a provider recommendation framework based on client-perceived performance (named PROPPER), which utilizes our findings on performance assessment and prediction. We formulated the recommendation algorithm and evaluated it through a mirror selection case study. It is shown that our framework produces better outcomes in most cases, compared to country-based or geographic distance-based selection schemes, which are the current approach of mirror selection nowadays.
