A geology field guide for secondary students visiting the Landels-Hills Big Creek Reserve, Big Sur, California

A field guide is always a handy, but rare, little document, especially for a secondary educator. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to research, develop, write and present this document, for the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve. The University of California Natural Reserve System oversees thirty-six multi-acre, natural reserves. One part of the overall mission of these reserves is an educational outreach program in which curriculum is made available to the school systems. The curriculum is to be used to educate the students about each specific reserve area, to engage students in learning about their environment and to create an awareness of the need for conservation of wild areas. The final products from this research are a secondary-level geology guidebook, for students, with suggested classroom and in-field lessons, specifically written for the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve, Big Sur, California, along with a revised and updated geologic map of the Reserve and a teaching rock collection, for use at the Reserve. / text

Three-dimensional gas migration and gas hydrate systems of south Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon

Hydrate Ridge is a peanut shape bathymetric high located about 80 km west of Newport, Oregon on the Pacific continental margin, within the Cascadia subduction zone’s accretionary wedge. The ridge's two topographic highs (S. and N. Hydrate Ridge) are characterized by gas vents and seeps that were observed with previous ODP initiatives. In 2008, we acquired a 3D seismic reflection data set using the P-Cable acquisition system to characterize the subsurface fluid migration pathways that feed the seafloor vent at S. Hydrate Ridge. The new high-resolution data reveal a complex 3D structure of localized faulting within the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). We interpret two groups of fault-related migration pathways. The first group is defined by regularly- and widely-spaced (100-150 m) faults that extend greater than 300ms TWT (~ 250 m) below seafloor and coincide with the regional thrust fault orientations of the Oregon margin. The deep extent of these faults makes them potential conduits for deeply sourced methane and may include thermogenic methane, which was found with shallow drilling during ODP Leg 204. As a fluid pathway these faults may complement the previously identified sand-rich, gas-filled stratigraphic horizon, Horizon A, which is a major gas migration pathway to the summit of S. Hydrate Ridge. The second group of faults is characterized by irregularly but closely spaced (~ 50 m), shallow fractures (extending < 160ms TWT below seafloor, ~ 115 m) found almost exclusively in the GHSZ directly beneath the seafloor vent at the summit of S. Hydrate Ridge. These faults form a closely-spaced network of fractures that provide multiple migration pathways for free gas entering the GHSZ to migrate vertically to the seafloor. We speculate that the faults are the product of hydraulic fracturing due to near-lithostatic gas pressures at the base of the GHSZ. These fractures may fill with hydrate and develop a lower permeability, which will lead to a buildup of gas pressures below the GHSZ. This may lead to a vertical propagation of new fractures to release the overpressure, which results in the high concentration of shallow fractures within the GHSZ seen in the 2008 data. / text

HIGH-RESOLUTION SEISMIC IMAGES OF THE FORMOSA RIDGE OFF SOUTHWESTERN TAIWAN WHERE “HYDROTHERMAL” CHEMOSYNTHETIC COMMUNITY IS PRESENT AT A COLD SEEP SITE

A high-resolution seismic reflection survey was conducted during the NT07-05 cruise over the Formosa Ridge offshore southwestern Taiwan where strong and continuous bottom simulating reflections (BSR) have been observed. Previous seafloor pictures taken from a deep-towed camera indicate that there are some chemosynthetic colonies. During the NT07-05 cruise, not only large and dense chemosynthetic communities were confirmed at the plume site, ROV Hyper-Dolphin has also discovered that both deep-sea mussel Bathymodiolus platifrons, and galatheid crab Shinkaia crosnieri are vigorously populated at this site. By integrating swatch bathymetry, multichannel seismic and high-resolution seismic reflection data, we now have a better understanding on the structural characters of the cold seep site. The cold seep is situated at the summit of the Formosa Ridge southern peak. Submarine canyons that incised continental slope on both sides of the ridge are the controlling factors of the ridge formation. The sedimentary strata are generally flat lying but have been deformed by mass wasting processes. Strong BSR is observed 400 to 500 ms below the seafloor of the ridge, with many bright reflections beneath it. There is a narrow vertical blanking zone raising from BSR to the crest of the ridge. This narrow zone is interpreted to be the fluid conduit of the seep site. BSR may form a good cap to trap gas below, and this “gas reservoir” is shallower than the canyon floors on either side of the ridge. We suggest that this “ridge type” gas reservoir configuration enables the cold sea water to get into the fluid system, and forms a special kind of “hydrothermal” circulation that feeds the unusual chemosynthetic communities observed at the Formosa Ridge cold seep site.

Phosphorus fertilization and mycorrhizae influence soil phosphorus dynamics, corn nutrition and yield under reduced-tillage practices

Grain corn (Zea mays L.) production occupies more farmland than any other annual crop in Quebec and is expanding demand from the livestock sector and the emerging bioethanol industry. Corn production requires high nutrient inputs and intensive tillage (IT). Many producers have thus switched to conservation tillage systems like ridge-tillage (RT) to overcome soil compaction and erosion problems that are common in IT systems. However, fertilizer guidelines developed for IT soils are used in RT although RT adoption greatly modifies phosphorus (P) dynamics. Lower fertilizer P requirements are expected because arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis known to enhance plant P nutrition are minimally disrupted under RT, compared to IT systems. A two-year study was conducted on a commercial farm in the Monteregie region (Quebec, Canada) to investigate the effects of P fertilizer rates and soil P-saturation status on corn early growth, nutrition and yield. Surface soil plant-available P was monitored in situ with anionic exchange membranes (P AEM) from seeding to the end of July. The effects of indigenous AM fungi on corn parameters and rhizosphere soil P pools were also investigated in untreated (AMNI) or AM-inhibited fungicide-treated (AMI) soils. Quebec's P fertilizer guidelines underestimated the soil P fertility in studied soils. Adding inorganic P (Pi) did not improve the early corn P nutrition, growth or yield, and had little impact soil PAEM. Variations in PAEM were better explained by climatic variables. AMNI corn had similar early development and high yield, regardless of whether P fertilizer was applied, whereas AMI plants needed P fertilizer to produce optimal yield. AMNI corn had reduced dependence on Pi inputs due to more efficient uptake of soil solution P i in surface and rhizosphere soils during the first 22 days after seeding (DAS), In the rhizosphere, available-Pi pool appeared to be used first to replenish the resin-P pool, but over the longer term, AM symbiosis also enhanced NaHCO3-Po mobilization through a mechanism that remains unclear. Deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which AM fungi alter soil P dynamics will contribute to the development of more sustainable P fertilizer programs for RT systems.

Temporal Variations in Spring Water Chemistry and Comparison of Variable Paleozoic Aquifer Discharges in the Ridge and Valley Province of Northwestern Georgia

The fluctuations in solute concentrations from eight springs in the Ridge and Valley Province in northwestern Georgia were used to determine flow types and to measure each aquifer’s ability to remove contamination. The target springs are located along a northeast trending line in the Ridge and Valley Province of northwest Georgia. This study determined and interpreted the fluctuations in chemistry of each of the sampled spring’s water based upon temporal variations of precipitation in the area and variations in the chemistries measured at each weekly sampling event. Analysis determined that carbonate springs that showed characteristics of diffuse flow, including stable conductance during variable rain events and greater than zero saturation indices increase the potential for the aquifer to filter potential contaminants before the spring discharge. This study attempts to show that by identifying pre-filtered drinking water sources quickly is possible, through field and laboratory analysis.

THE EVOLUTION OF GRENVILLE BASEMENT IN THE EASTERN GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS; CONSTRAINTS FROM U-PB ZIRCON GEOCHRONOLOGY, WHOLE ROCK SM-ND, AND FELDSPAR PB GEOCHEMISTRY

Identifying the crustal affinity of Grenville basement rocks in the Dellwood quadrangle, western NC, provides insight into the tectonic evolution of eastern Laurentia during Grenville orogenesis. U-Pb zircon geochronology of orthogneiss, augen gneiss, and mafic xenoliths in orthogneiss reveal magmatic pulses at 1130, 1180, and 1330 Ma and metamorphic episodes at 450 and 1040 Ma. Xenoliths in 1330 Ma orthogneiss are as old as 1382 Ma and represent the oldest component of Blue Ridge basement identified to-date. Feldspar Pb isotope values span a range between juvenile-Laurentian and southern-central Appalachian basement/Amazonia. Most Pb isotope data define an array consistent with crustal mixing between Laurentia and Amazonia, however, one xenolith has a unique Pb isotopic composition interpreted as Laurentian crust. Sm-Nd isotope data yield depleted mantle model ages ranging from 1.52 to 1.79 Ga (200 to 650 Ma older than their crystallization ages) indicating a broadly non-juvenile heritage for Dellwood basement. Three biotite gneiss samples contain detrital zircon grains derived from 1060, 1160, 1330, and 1750 Ma sources. Multiple magmatic zircon age populations, variable depleted mantle modelages, and regionally unique isotopic Pb signatures are evidence of protracted Grenville magmatism in the southern Appalachians involving both Laurentian and Amazonian crustal components.

In this thesis advanced regression methods are applied to discuss and investigate highly relevant research questions in the areas of finance and economics. In the field of credit risk the thesis investigates a hierarchical model which allows to obtain a consensus score, if several ratings are available for each firm. Autoregressive processes and random effects are used to model both a correlation structure between and within the obligors in the sample. The model also allows to validate the raters themselves. The problem of model uncertainty and multicollinearity between the explanatory variables is addressed in the other two applications. Penalized regressions, like bridge regressions, are used to handle multicollinearity while model averaging techniques allow to account for model uncertainty. The second part of the thesis makes use of Bayesian elastic nets and Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) techniques to discuss long-term economic growth. It identifies variables which are significantly related to long-term growth. Additionally, it illustrates the superiority of this approach in terms of predictive accuracy. Finally, the third part combines ridge regressions with BMA to identify macroeconomic variables which are significantly related to aggregated firm failure rates. The estimated results deliver important insights for e.g., stress-test scenarios. (author's abstract)
