My thesis is focused on the issues of the punishment for traffic offences. This topic is actually in the spotlight of the social discourse since the relatively high number of tragic traffic accidents leads to the call for the solution of the anomy on the Czech roads. One of possible solutions is also a proportional use of the state repression using the legal tools of the criminal law. The goal of this thesis is an analysis of all the punishments applicable to the traffic offences and their de lege lata and de lege ferenda evaluation. In the first part of this thesis, I will define all kinds of transportation and their legal basis. This is necessary to put the road traffic offences into their proper place in the system of traffic related offences. Furthermore, I define the traffic offence and I also elaborate on which offences are traffic offences per se. My conclusion is that we should use more restrictive approach when it comes to listing the traffic offence. Later on, I modify this restrictive approach by adding the offences of reckless endangerment and obstruction of an official decision. The main subject of this thesis is a detailed analysis of pre-oppid coin types represented in the monitored region and their interpretation. The thesis also includes a chronological concept of the earliest stages of Celtic coinage (3rd-2nd cent. BC.) and its relationship to the archaeological chronology of the middle of La Tene period. In the first part I describe various pre-oppid types known from Moravia. Subsequently, the thesis deals with production-trading centers (Němčice nad Hanou, Roseldorf, Nowa Cerekwia) in the corridor of the Amber Route. However, the most important part is typological - a chronological overview of coins from the production- trading center Němčice nad Hanou, which is mostly based on catalog of coin findings from newly compiled by E. Son preference prevails among Indian couples. I test the hypothesis that women who bear sons experience an elevated status within the household, which translates into their increased role in decision-making. The first essay empirically examines the issue. Using data from the Indian Human Development Survey, I find that women who have given birth to at least one son show greater participation in the household’s financial decisions as well as other decisions in a household. Presence of a senior member in the household, however, reduces the women’s relative household bargaining strength.
The second essay examines the wage differentials of natives, naturalized citizens, and immigrants on the basis of gender, and for the latter two categories, on the basis of region of origin. This paper argues that the assimilation effect for naturalized citizens should be stronger than that for immigrants since a naturalized citizen, on an average, spends more than 15 years in the country, much higher than immigrants. I find that immigrants experience higher increase in wages than naturalized citizens with longer stay in the United States. The essay concludes that this trend in wages cannot be explained by the assimilation argument alone. We also report that naturalized citizens command higher returns to higher education than immigrants.
The third essay explores issues in regional economics. Kansas has the third largest public highway miles and one of the highest miles per person in the country. Due to declining rural population, counties lack the required tax base and fiscal health to support their large ailing rural road infrastructure. The average farm size is increasing and so is the size of vehicles using the rural roads. This paper suggests removing some rural low volume roads from the county road network as one option. I study three Kansas counties to analyze the cost-benefit of reducing low volume road miles. I find that rural counties will be able to save money by closing some low volume roads.

Day / Over the last several years, the use of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, or FPGAs, has become increasingly popular in the embedded systems field. However, FPGAs are typically used only as a coprocessor or dedicated DSP. This project proposes that an embedded system can realize a performance gain over a traditional microprocessor-based design and be made more flexible and extensible by using an FPGA as the primary processing device in the embedded system. Basing a design on an FPGA also allows new features to be much more rapidly developed and integrated into the system.
This will be shown by designing an FPGA based embedded system for Surface Systems & Instruments’ Walking Profiler device. The system will include support for rotary encoders, an incline sensor for data collection, and an Ethernet protocol for communication with a Windows computer. The implementation of a sub sampling distance measuring algorithm will be used to demonstrate the tradeoffs between hardware, software, and development times.

At the Swedish Transport Administration two different maintenance strategies are practiced to keep cameras in road tunnels clean. The theory of Life Cycle Cost, LCC, is applied on maintenance depending on its Level of Automation, LoA, and is further developed. In the case of cameras, in Swedish road tunnels the processes demonstrate two different LoA. LCC is used to compare and analyze how the properties between semiautomatic and manual maintenance affect investment costs, operational costs and the cost of preventive and corrective maintenance. Semiautomatic cleaning maintenance of cameras in road tunnels indicate a larger LCC than manual maintenance. This is due to a larger investment cost for machinery, but a similar annual cost for preventive maintenance. The presented properties affecting LCC are placed in a general context. This emphasize the significance of examining costs at high level of detail and comprehend the properties causing the costs.

Severe traffic accidents cause personal tragedies forpeople involved as well as huge costs for the society. Therefore the roadauthorities continuously try to improve the traffic safety. Traffic safety may beimproved by reduced speeds, crash safe cars, tires with better road grip andimproved road maintenance. The environmental effects from roadmaintenance when spreading de-icing chemicals need to be considered, i.e.how much chemicals should be used to maximize traffic safety and minimizethe environmental effects. Knowledge about the current and upcoming roadcondition can improve the road maintenance and hence improve traffic safety.This thesis deals with sensors and models that give information about the roadcondition.The performance and reliability of existing surface mounted sensors wereexamined by laboratory experiments. Further research involved field studies tocollect data used to develop surface status models based on road weather dataand camera images. Field studies have also been performed to find best usageof non intrusive IR technology.The research presented here showed that no single sensor give enoughinformation by itself to safely describe the road condition. However, the resultsindicated that among the traditional road surface mounted sensors only theactive freezing point sensor gave reliable freezing point results. Furtherresearch aimed to find a model that could classify the road condition indifferent road classes from existing road weather sensor data and road images.The result was a model that accurately could distinguish between the roadconditions dry, wet, snowy and icy. These road conditions are clearly dissimilarand are therefore used as the definition of the road classes used in this thesis.Finally, results from research regarding remote sensing IR technology showedthat it significantly improves knowledge of the road temperature and statuscompared to data from surface mounted sensors. / Vårt samhälle bygger på att det finns effektiva transporter av människor ochvaror för att säkerställa att samhällets funktioner fungerar och att företagenkan genomföra sina affärer. Miljöeffekterna från vinterväghållningdär avisningsmedel sprids på vägarna måste beaktas, d.v.s. hur mycketkemikalier bör användas för att maximera trafiksäkerheten och minimeramiljöpåverkan. Denna avhandling handlar om sensorer och modeller som gerinformation om väglaget. En kunskap om aktuellt och kommande väglag kanförbättra väghållningen och därmed öka trafiksäkerheten.I avhandlingen har prestanda och tillförlitlighet hos befintliga vägmonteradesensorer granskats i laboratorieexperiment. Det vidare arbetet handlade om att hitta enmodell som skulle kunna klassificera vägförhållanden i olika vägklassergenom att utnyttja information från befintliga sensorer och kamerabilder.Detta arbete resulterade i en modell som tillförlitligt kan särskilja väglagentorr, våt, snöig och isig. Dessa väglag är väsentligt olika och har därför valtssom väglagsklasser i denna avhandling. Under en säsong genomfördes ävenfältförsök med beröringsfri infraröd mätteknik där det visade sig att denberöringsfria teknologin förbättrar kunskapen om vägbanans temperatur och vägbanans status.

Tony Tanner's book City of Words analyzes American literature from 1950-1970; in the chapter entitled "Everything Running Down" the theme of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, is explored and revealed to be a common motif within many works of American literature. Tanner's analysis does not specifically address the presence of entropy within the genre of the American road narrative; when considering his analysis presented in "Everything Running Down" with Kris Lackey's analysis of American road narratives presented in his book RoadFrames, the presence of entropy and how it is applied within the American road narrative becomes apparent. Although Jack Kerouac's On the Road and Cormac McCarthy's The Road were published over sixty years apart from one another and are seemingly disparate texts, these two texts reveal the thematic use of entropy which connects them in an ongoing dialogue within the genre of the American road narrative.

Dissolved Road Salt Transport in Urban and Rural Watersheds in MassachusettsTedder, Newton William January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Rudolph Hon / Thesis advisor: Yvette Kuiper / Chloride-based deicers (NaCl, CaCl<sub>2</sub>, MgCl<sub>2</sub>), also referred to as road salt, are the most common substances used in maintaining safe roadway surfaces during the winter months. Upon application, road salt reacts with the accumulated snow or ice to form brine equilibrium solutions along the liquidus line in the salt-water system. Dissolved salts dissociate, leading to increased concentrations of the respective ions in nearby soils, surface water, and groundwater. Of the ions present in road salt, chloride has the advantage of tracking all chloride deicers at the same time and since chloride ions are conservative tracers in soils it stays unaffected by ionic exchange interferences. This study explores the mechanisms of chloride return flows by investigating chloride dissolved loads, chloride concentrations in stream waters, seasonal patterns, and changes over the course of four years in two separate watersheds in Massachusetts with differing degrees of urbanization. The chloride tracking technique used in this study is based on calibrated chloride concentrations obtained from specific conductance signals recorded every 15 minutes by automatic recording systems at two locations, one in rural central Massachusetts and the other in urban eastern Massachusetts. These systems are maintained by the USGS, which also provide the simultaneously recorded stream flow datasets. The dissolved chloride load carried by each river is calculated for each single 15-minute interval by multiplying water volume with the corresponding chloride concentration, resulting in a total of over 34,000 data points per annum per site. Hydrograph separation techniques were used to separate dissolved load transported by each river into two separate flow components, event flow resulting from precipitation events, and baseflow resulting from groundwater discharge. Well defined hydrograph baseflow supported periods yield consistent chloride concentrations independent of the season at either urban or rural study sites. Comparison of direct runoff dissolved chloride loads with the total annual dissolved loads suggests that only a small fraction of the deicers actually removed during the overland runoff events and that a minimum of 60% of the total load discharged each year in both urban and rural systems is transported by groundwater. From groundwater recharge by brines rural watersheds are currently retaining as much as 95% of the total chloride applied to roadways each year while urban and suburban watersheds may only retain 75% of the total chloride applied to roadways each year. The increased retention of chloride in rural areas is likely due to the decreased amount of chloride transported during winter seasons as event flow compared to urban watersheds. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College.
