Row Spacing Effect on Forage Sorghum Yield and Quality at Maricopa, AZ, 2015

10 pp. / Forage sorghum yields have been should to increase with narrow row spacing of 20 inches or less. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of narrow row spacing on forage sorghum yield and quality in Arizona. Two row spacing (20 and 40 inch) and two forage sorghum hybrids (Great Scott and Silo 700D BMR) were evaluated in a study conducted at the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center in 2015. Row spacing had no effect on forage yield, moisture, plant height, or maturity even though light interception was greater for the closer row spacing. The only feed quality parameter affected by row spacing was lactic acid which increased with row spacing. Hybrid by row spacing interactions was detected for a few feed quality parameters. Decreasing forage sorghum row spacing from 40 to 20 inches does not appear to have an advantage based on the results of this study.

There is renewed interest in cotton performance grown using various row spacings and plantings patterns in the Midsouth. Cotton seed size has been reduced compared to sixty years ago. Planting smaller seeds is concerning due to having less energy for emergence as well as complicating the ginning process. Two row spacings, two planting patterns, and two cotton varieties were evaluated over eight site years from 2019-2020. The solid planting pattern produced a higher yield on a land area basis. In addition, two varieties, each with three seed counts, were planted at three seeding rates and evaluated over six site years from 2019-2020. Greater seedcotton yields were observed from larger seed sizes and higher seeding rates. Row spacing had no impact on yield but depending on input cost, a 2x1 skip pattern could be beneficial. Also, higher seeding rates and larger seeds maximized yields.

This thesis focuses on the application of row spacing when planting corn for silage. The evaluation was based experiment on a little parcel at the altitude of 400 metres under the management of cooperative farm Krasna Hora. The attempt was aimed at comparing the yield of corn silage grown in one row (0.75 meters; classic row), twin row (0.75 meters) and close row (0.37 meters). The results in 2015 reflect drought, which appeared during the vegetation period. The one-year results showed differences in the yields of biomass and contents of biomass dry matter dependent on the type of row. For best results he reached close row.

Row crop navigation by autonomous ground vehicle for crop scouting

For this to happen designs that are cost effective, robust, and easy to use will be necessary. Robotic vehicles that can pest scout, monitor crop health, and potentially plant and harvest crops will provide new ways to increase production within agriculture. At this time, the use of robotic vehicles to plant and harvest crops poses many challenges including complexity and power consumption. The incorporation of small robotic vehicles for monitoring and scouting fields has the potential to allow for easier integration of robotic systems into current farming practices as the technology continues to develop. Benefits of using unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for crop scouting include higher resolution and real time mapping, measuring, and monitoring of pest location density, crop nutrient levels, and soil moisture levels. The focus of this research is the ability of a UGV to scout pest populations and pest patterns to complement existing scouting technology used on UAVs to capture information about nutrient and water levels. There are many challenges to integrating UGVs in conventionally planted fields of row crops including intra-row and inter-row maneuvering. For intra-row maneuvering; i.e. between two rows of corn, cost effective sensors will be needed to keep the UGV between straight rows, to follow contoured rows, and avoid local objects. Inter-row maneuvering involves navigating from long straight rows to the headlands by moving through the space between two plants in a row. Oftentimes headland rows are perpendicular to the row that the UGV is within and if the crop is corn, the spacing between plants can be as narrow as 5”. A vehicle design that minimizes or eliminates crop damage when inter-row maneuvering occurs will be very beneficial and allow for earlier integration of robotic crop scouting into conventional farming practices. Using three fixed HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors with LabVIEW programming proved to be a cost effective, simple, solution for intra-row maneuvering of an unmanned ground vehicle through a simulated corn row. Inter-row maneuvering was accomplished by designing a transformable tracked vehicle with the two configurations of the tracks being parallel and linear. The robotic vehicle operates with tracks parallel to each other and skid steering being the method of control for traveling between rows of corn. When the robotic vehicle needs to move through narrow spaces or from one row to the next, two motors rotate the frame of the tracks to a linear configuration where one track follows the other track. In the linear configuration the vehicle has a width of 5 inches which allows it to move between corn plants in high population fields for minimally invasive maneuvers. Fleets of robotic vehicles will be required to perform scouting operations on large fields. Some robotic vehicle operations will require coordination between machines to complete the tasks assigned. Simulation of the path planning for coordination of multiple machines was studied within the context of a non-stationary traveling salesman problem to determine optimal path plans.

Agronomic and Economic Evaluation of Ultra Narrow Row Cotton Production in Arizona in 1999

An experiment was conducted at the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center, Maricopa, Arizona in 1999 to compare and evaluate agronomic and economic differences between Ultra Narrow Row (UNR) and conventional cotton row spacing systems with respect to yield, fiber quality, earliness potential, plant growth and development, and production costs. Row spacing was 10 and 40 inches for the UNR and conventional systems, respectively. Two varieties were evaluated within each row spacing, Sure Grow 747 (SG 747) and Delta Pine 429RR (DP 429RR). Lygus populations were extremely high in the Maricopa, Arizona region in 1999 which resulted in poor fruit retention from early through mid-season. As a result of poor boll load through mid-season, the UNR plots were irrigated and grown later into the season than desired along with the conventional cotton in order to set and develop a later season boll load. The mean lint yield averaged across row spacing was significantly greater (P=0.05) in the UNR row spacing at 1334 lb/A than for the conventional row spacing at 1213 lb/A. SG 747 produced 1426 and 1337lb/A of lint in the UNR and conventional systems, respectively. DP 429RR produced 1242 and 1089 lb/A of lint in the UNR and conventional systems respectively. Fiber grades were all 21 or 31 in both UNR and conventional systems. Micronaire was 4.9 or less in both varieties within the UNR system. Micronaire was high at 5.3 in the conventionally produced SG 747 resulting in discount but was acceptable at 4.7 in the conventionally produced DP 429RR. Length and strength measurements met base standards in all cotton variety and row spacing combinations. Neither the conventional or the UNR cotton production systems were profitable due primarily to high chemical insect control costs and early season boll loss. However, UNR production costs were lower by $0.09 per pound than in the conventional system on a cash cost basis and $0.14 per pound lower when considering total costs including variable and ownership costs.

Weed Control in Arizona Ultra Narrow Row Cotton: 1999 Preliminary Results

In two 1999 Arizona studies, a preplant incorporated (PPI) application of Prowl (2.4 pt/A) or Treflan (0.75 lb a.i./A) followed by a topical Roundup Ultra (1 qt/A) application at the 3 to 4 true leaf cotton growth stage provided good weed control. At the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center field that had low density weed populations, a postemergence topical Staple (1.8 oz/A) application also provided good weed control was more expensive. At the Buckeye, Arizona study site, a PPI application of Prowl at a reduced rate (1.2 pt/A) was as effective as the full rate (2.4 pt/A) but a preemergence application of Prowl (2.4 pt/A) was not as effective as either of the PPI Prowl rates or PPI Treflan (0.75 lb a.i./A). A postemergence topical Staple application (1.8 oz/A) following the Roundup Ultra application did not significantly improve weed control. After one field season of experimentation and observation in Arizona UNR cotton, experience suggests that in fields with low to moderate weed populations, a PPI Prowl or Treflan application followed by a postemergence topical Roundup Ultra application will provide acceptable weed control in most fields. However, the presence of nutsedge or other difficult to control weeds may require two postemergence topical Roundup Ultra application prior to the four leaf growth stage of cotton. More research is needed to further explore weed control options in Arizona UNR cotton production systems.

Preliminary Investigations in Ultra-narrow Row Cotton, Safford Agricultural Center, 1999

A preliminary investigation was made in Ultra-narrow row cotton production on the Safford Agricultural Center to see if there was any promise in that technology for cotton producers in the high deserts of Arizona. Increases in plant populations to near 100,000 plants per acre in single lines, double lines and quadruple lines per bed were the goals of the study. In-season plant mapping to evaluate differences in plant growth characteristics were done along with yield measurements to evaluate differences. Yield increases were not seen with increases in plant populations in single row plantings nor in multiple row plantings.

Evaluation of Commerical Ultra Narrow Cotton Production in Arizona

Seven commercial ultra narrow row (UNR) cotton fields were monitored on a weekly basis in Maricopa County, AZ in 1999. Varieties of Delta Pine and Sure Grow were planted from April 15 to June 1 and reached cut-out after accumulating 1913 to 2327 heat units after planting. Average yield for UNR cotton was 2.1 bales per acre which was 0.4 bales per acre lower than the five year average for cotton planted on conventional row spacings. Fiber quality from gin records for 801 bales had average micronaire readings of 4.54 and grades of 11 and 21 for 74% of bales. Discounts for extraneous matter (bark, grass, and cracked seed) was 5.4% and average strength (34.8) and staple lengths (27.12) were in acceptable ranges. Total cash costs ranged from $450 to $705.

Identification and characterisation of the barley row-type gene VRS3

Barley row-type describes the number of grains present at a node on the barley spike. Two forms exist amongst cultivated barley: two-rowed with only the central of three spikelets fertile producing a single grain at a node and six-rowed with all three spikelets fertile, producing three grain at a node. Twelve regions of the barley genome have been associated with the row-type character with specific genes identified at three loci, <i>VRS1</i>, <i>VRS4</i> and <i>INT-C</i>. Advancements in the understanding of the genetic control underpinning barley row-type enables the identification of potential mechanisms for improving yield and yield architecture within the cereals.  This study used genetic linkage mapping in segregating F2 populations to refine the genetic location of the row-type locus, <i>VRS3</i>, to 16 candidate genes on barley chromosome 1H. Sequencing candidate loci in 32 <i>vrs3</i> induced mutant alleles identified <i>VRS3</i> to be a highly conserved JmjC histone demethylase, with two natural alleles within European cultivated barley. <i>VRS3</i> was further characterised as a potential means of improving grain uniformity within cultivated six-rowed barley, through phenotypic assessment of grain size in varying allele combinations of <i>VRS3</i>, <i>VRS1</i> and <i>INT-C</i>. The addition of six-rowed alleles at these loci was found to improve balance between central and lateral grain parameters, resulting in a more uniform grain sample. Analysis of gene expression found <i>Vrs3</i> to be constitutively expressed across a diverse panel of barley tissues. Moreover, detailed study within the developing inflorescence suggests a role for <i>Vrs3</i> in the regulation of the row-type genes <i>VRS1</i> and <i>INT-C. </i>
