Cutting-Plane Separation Strategies for Semidefinite Programming Models to Solve Single-Row Facility Layout ProblemsYen, Ginger January 2008 (has links)
The single-row facility layout problem (SRFLP) is concerned with finding the optimal linear placement of n departments with different lengths in a straight line. It is typically achieved by minimizing the cost associated with the interactions between the departments. The semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation model that incorporates cutting planes proposed recently by Anjos, Kennings, and Vannelli (AKV) was considered a breakthrough in the field. This thesis presents a new SDP model AKV' and compares the two relaxations. The AKV' is largely based on the previous model, but it reduces the number of linear constraints from O(n³) to O(n²). Therefore, it reduces the computing time at the expense of a slightly weaker lower bound. However, AKV' is observed to pay off as the instance size increases. By examining the gap for both the AKV and AKV' relaxations, we notice that both relaxations generate very small gaps at the root node, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the relaxations.
Six different strategies are presented to separate the cutting planes for the medium-sized SRFLP. In combination with the two SDP relaxations, we compare the six strategies using three instances of different characteristics. An overall best strategy is deduced from the computational results, but the best choice of relaxations and the best number of cuts added at each iteration changes depending on the characteristics of the instances. Two new cutting plane strategies are proposed for large instances. This allows the solution to optimality of new instances with 36 departments, which is higher than previously published results in literature. We also briefly point out how the computing time can vary greatly between different sets of data of the same size due to the characteristics of the department lengths.

High-input management practices are often heavily marketed to producers to increase soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] yield in already high-yielding environments. Field research was conducted in three locations within 6 states (Arkansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, and Minnesota) in 2009 to determine the effect of seed treatment, inoculant, foliar fungicide, additional soil fertility beyond state recommendations, foliar fertilizer, increased population over state recommendations, and narrow row spacing on yield. The high-input system (combination of the management practices) yielded higher than standard-input system (University recommended management practices) in only 8 of the 18 locations. Narrow rows, in both the high and standard-input systems, only increased yield in 4 locations. Inoculant did not increase yield at any location. Foliar fertilizer application and seed treatment increased yield in one location each. The additional soil fertility and fungicide application increased yield in two locations each. The increased population increased yields in 3 of the 18 locations; while an additional fungicide application at R5 only increased yield in 1 location. Foliar fertilizers at rates above commercial use did not increase soybean yield in Kentucky in 2008 or 2009. High-input production practices were largely unsuccessful at increasing soybean yield in these studies.

Studies were conducted in 2011 and 2012 to determine if narrow row corn (Zea mays L.) and/or greater plant populations could affect yield, time to silking, and other physiological characteristics. Main plots of six hybrids were arranged as a randomized complete bock design with three replications. Split plots were row widths of 76-cm (wide rows) and 20-cm rows on 76-cm spacing (twin rows). Split-split plots were target plant populations of 75 000 and 111 000 plants ha-1. Corn was no-till seeded into soybean stubble near Lexington, KY in 2011 and 2012. Year interacted with most factors analyzed in the study. This was expected, given the extreme differences in weather. 2011 ASI (days) approached zero as plant population increased in wide rows in two out of four hybrids. ASI response to plant population in twin rows was not significant for any hybrid. In 2011, yield was greater in twin rows than wide rows. For significant equations, in 2011 grain yield increased as plant population increased, but in 2012 grain yield decreased as plant population increased, across both row widths. Kernel number per ear decreased as plant population increased in 2011 and 2012, but at different rates for wide and twin rows.

TWIN AND NARROW ROW WIDTH EFFECTS ON CORN (ZEA MAYS L.) YIELD AND WEED MANAGEMENTMackey, Grant 01 January 2013 (has links)
Corn or maize (Zea mays L.) has been grown in North America for many centuries, and an increase in corn production will continue to be needed. Agriculture producers must meet the demands of feeding and providing for an increasing population of people. In order to meet those needs, different production practices are being investigated as a way to increase grain yield.
Field plots were conducted across the state of Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the interaction between hybrid, row width, and plant density on corn yield. The primary objectives were to test if 1) narrower rows increase grain yield, 2) higher plant densities increase yield in narrow and twin rows, and 3) the interactions among all factors. Three hybrids were evaluated in three row widths (76, 38 cm or twin) at target densities ranging from 74 000 to 124 000 plants ha-1. Interactions between hybrid, row width, and plant density occurred; however, effects on grain yield and plant physiological characteristics were small and variable across all environments. Plant density had the greatest impact on IPAR and grain yield.
Field trials were conducted near Lexington and Princeton, Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the effects of row width on different weed management treatments in corn. The objectives were to 1) evaluate five weed management methods in three row widths (76, 38 cm or twin) and 2) estimate the effect of these practices on corn yield. Herbicides used within each weed management strategy included the residual herbicide S-metholachlor + atrazine (1.4 + 1.8 kg/ha) applied preemergence (PRE) and/or glyphosate (0.86 kg/ha) postemergence (POST). Weed management treatments consisted of a PRE only, PRE followed by POST, POST only, POST + PRE, and an untreated control. Row spacing had little effect on weed suppression and control except for two cases. In general, PRE followed by POST and POST + Residual treatments controlled weeds better compared to PRE only and POST only treatments. Corn yields were higher when a herbicide was used compared to applying no herbicide application.

CORN (<em>Zea mays</em> L.) YIELD RESPONSE TO DEFOLIATION AT DIFFERENT ROW WIDTHSBattaglia, Martin Leonardo 01 January 2014 (has links)
Corn (Zea mays L.) defoliation experiments have been conducted for more than 120 years. However, there is limited data on the effect of row width on defoliation in modern hybrids. A two-year experiment was conducted in Lexington, Kentucky with two hybrids (113 relative maturity (RM) and 120 RM), two row widths (38 and 76 cm) and a combination of defoliation timings and severities: 0% defoliation (control), V7-100%, V14-50%, V14-100%, R2-50% and R2-100%. No yield difference among hybrids was observed in 2012. Yields were 26% greater in 38-cm rows than 76-cm rows in 2012. For 2013, corn yield for 38-cm was 10% greater, but hybrid, row width and defoliation interacted. Lowest yields were caused by V14-100% followed by R2-100%. Defoliations of V14-50% and R2-50% reduced yields in some cases. Complete defoliations at V7 did not reduce yields in most comparisons. Light interception below 80% during the critical period was enough to attain maximum yields in defoliated plants. Kernel number and kernel weight were most reduced by V14-100% and R2-100% defoliations, respectively. There is a potential for narrow rows to reduce grain yield losses after a defoliation event, when compared with wide rows.

Row Compression and Nested Product Decomposition of a Hierarchical Representation of a Quasiseparable MatrixHudachek-Buswell, Mary 12 August 2014 (has links)
This research introduces a row compression and nested product decomposition of an nxn hierarchical representation of a rank structured matrix A, which extends the compression and nested product decomposition of a quasiseparable matrix. The hierarchical parameter extraction algorithm of a quasiseparable matrix is efficient, requiring only O(nlog(n))operations, and is proven backward stable. The row compression is comprised of a sequence of small Householder transformations that are formed from the low-rank, lower triangular, off-diagonal blocks of the hierarchical representation. The row compression forms a factorization of matrix A, where A = QC, Q is the product of the Householder transformations, and C preserves the low-rank structure in both the lower and upper triangular parts of matrix A. The nested product decomposition is accomplished by applying a sequence of orthogonal transformations to the low-rank, upper triangular, off-diagonal blocks of the compressed matrix C. Both the compression and decomposition algorithms are stable, and require O(nlog(n)) operations. At this point, the matrix-vector product and solver algorithms are the only ones fully proven to be backward stable for quasiseparable matrices. By combining the fast matrix-vector product and system solver, linear systems involving the hierarchical representation to nested product decomposition are directly solved with linear complexity and unconditional stability. Applications in image deblurring and compression, that capitalize on the concepts from the row compression and nested product decomposition algorithms, will be shown.

One problem has been a demand for a new dwelling and work spaces. The Bangkok townhouse has served to meet both needs, but the forms it has taken thus far leaves needs improvement.This creative project proposes improvements to the Bangkok townhouses to make it more responsive to its environment as well as interior functions. The improvements focus on facades, reorganization of interior spaces, and physical townhouse elements. The study uses a typological and environmental study to understand and investigate examples of existing Bangkok townhouses. This includes case study analyses to suggest daylighting design strategies for design applications.This study proposes a facade design guideline and a set of physical arrangement suggestions for enhancing the daylight, ventilation, and accommodation capacity of the Bangkok townhouses. In addition, potential applications of the facade guidelines are illustrated. The facade and physical arrangement guidelines can be a fundamental concept for further development and improvement of the Bangkok and other townhouses in locations throughout Thailand. / Department of Architecture
