Ethics and social science research : a survey of social science researchers' experiences of ethically challenging incidents and ethics review.Corbella, Nicole. January 2007 (has links)
This study aimed to profile social science researchers' experiences of ethically challenging incidents and ethics review and to consider these experiences in terms of the two institutions from which participants were selected. Data was gathered by means of an email survey sent to social science researchers working in both a university and a research organisation. The findings reveal that ethically challenging incidents involving privacy, confidentiality and anonymity, harm, beneficence, poor science, role conflict, informed consent, recruitment of participants and publication were encountered frequently by social science researchers. While respondents reported both positive and negative experiences of ethics review, researchers at the university reported significantly more ethically challenging incidents and negative experiences of ethics review than did researchers from the research organisation. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

A bibliometric study of the publication patterns of South African scientists.Jacobs, Daisy. January 1998 (has links)
One of the legacies of the apartheid system was the discrepancy in funding
and support for various activities, including research work in science and
technology based on racial grounds. Some institutions of higher learning and
research institutes were favoured more than others in terms of resources.
Presently, despite the fact that there is national democracy, previously
disadvantaged institutions with their culture of minimal research and poor
publication output continue to produce inadequate quantities of research and
publications while the historically developed universities are at the forefront
of research and publication. This research is a bibliometric study of the publication patterns of South African scientists. The subjects were academic scientists from ten selected universities of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal, which
vary considerably, with regard to standards of education, quantity of
publications, development and overall progress.
The general purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns used by
scientists in publishing the results of their research, provide valuable
information and play a significant role in evaluating the research and
publication patterns of scientists from these different institutions
The study collected two sets of data through lists of publications and a
questionnaire. The questionnaire was pretested and the comments of the
respondents enabled the investigator to make the necessary revisions in the
subsequent questionnaire.
The questionnaire was sent to 350 full-time academic scientists in the
departments of physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and biochemistry /
microbiology in the selected universities. Out of the 350 scientists, 174
responded. Twenty one returns were discarded, hence only 153 were used in
the data analysis. Further data was obtained from the Science Citation Index
and the Foundation for Research Development.
Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, one way ANOVA and
Pearson Chi-Square test. The results obtained in this study showed that the
five null hypotheses were rejected. It was found that there was a : -
• direct relation between academic rank and productivity; academic status
and productivity.
• direct relation correlation between prestige and productivity.
• higher impact of "A" grade scientists over non-"A" grade scientists.
• significant difference in productivity between areas of science that are
funded and areas which receive little or no funding. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

Academic entrepreneurship : Why do university scientists play the entrepreneurship game?Sass, Enrico January 2013 (has links)
Research on entrepreneurial motivation of university scientists is often determined by quantitative methods without taking into account context-related influences. According to different studies, entrepreneurial scientists found a spin-off company due to motives like independency, market opportunity, money or risk of unemployment (short-term contracts). To give a comprehensive explanation, it is important to use a qualitative research view that considers academic rank, norms and values of university scientists. The author spoke with 35 natural scientists and asked professors and research fellows for their entrepreneurial motivation. The results of this study are used to develop a typology of entrepreneurial and non-entrepreneurial scientists within German universities. This paper presents the key findings of the study (Sass 2011).

The effects of podcasts of STEM professionals on middle school science students interests in STEM careers / Title on signature form: Use of podcasts of STEM professionals on middle school students and its effects on students interest in STEM careers / Effects of podcasts of science technology engineering mathematics professionals on middle school science students interests in science technology engineering mathematics careersHuelskamp, Diane M. 18 December 2010 (has links)
Job vacancies in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields are
expected to rise to 2.5 million between 2004 and 2014 (BLS, 2005). To help fill this need,
STEM professionals were podcasted to middle school students, exposing them to the potential
job opportunities which exist, and possibly increasing their interest in STEM careers. To
investigate whether STEM professional podcasts to middle school students increased their
interest in STEM careers, a quasi-experimental pretest/midtest/posttest control group design was
analyzed with ANCOVA to determine differences in interest between those students who viewed
the podcasts and those who did not. Grade level and gender were also studied to determine
differences in interest in pursuing a STEM career. The findings were that the podcast group had
significantly higher midtest and posttest scores compared to the control group, when the pretest
was the covariate. Posttest scores were not significant between the two treatment groups when
midtest scores were used as the covariate. Findings for gender suggested that there is no
difference in males and females for interest in pursuing a STEM career when treatment group
and grade level were controlled. Grade level comparisons between the two treatment groups
found no significant difference in grade level for interest in pursuing a STEM career, when group
and gender were controlled. The incorporation of STEM professional podcasts into the
classroom could stimulate class discussions on current issues in science, potential careers in
STEM and preparatory subjects needed for a particular career which may lead future STEM
career pursuits. / Access to thesis and accompanying PDF permanently restricted to Ball State community only / Department of Biology
