Music therapy for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias| A grant proposal

Ramos, Megan E. 17 March 2016 (has links)

The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to implement a music therapy program for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. There are over five million people in the United States who live with Alzheimer’s disease and that number is expected to increase significantly. The costs of medication and the negative impacts of dementia require non-pharmacological treatments.

This program would be held at Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles in Los Angeles. The May and Stanley Smith Trust was chosen as the funding source. If funded, this program would not only improve the quality of life of individuals suffering living with dementia but also their caregivers. Through various forms of music therapy (individual and group, including activity therapy where participants play instruments) and a support group for caregivers, this program is expected to lead to positive impacts on a large scale.

Content analysis of the literature| Recovery and quality of life for individuals with serious mental illness

Lopez, Nancy 18 June 2016 (has links)

Mental illness can be debilitating and gravely affect the quality of life (QoL) of individuals with mental disorders. What is more, it is often difficult for individuals to manage their disorder while maintaining a good QoL and to work towards a recovery that encompasses all aspects of their lives. This content analysis of 23 scholarly articles attempted to collect as many influencing factors to QoL and recovery, both positive and negative. The results indicated that there are a variety of environmental, psychological, and social elements that affect QoL and recovery. Social support and social networks were cited most often as improving QoL and aiding in recovery while stigma was found hinder recovery and improved QoL. Additionally, it gathered information about different treatments, interventions, and resources used to treat mental disorders. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a therapeutic intervention, was found to be a commonly used intervention. Recommendations for social work practice, policy, and future research regarding mental health are also presented in this analysis.

Maatskaplike gevallewerkintervensie aan adolessente met aggressiewe gedrag

Kruger, Richard 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical framework for social workers in nongovernmental organisations with regards to the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. The research was done based on an extensive literature study, which focussed on theories of aggression and factors which contribute to aggressive behaviour in adolescents, as well as the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. A combined qualitative and quantitative research method and an explorative and describing research design have been used in this study, since this combination resulted in reaching the goal of the study. The empirical research investigated the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. The universe consisted of all nongovernmental organisations in the Boland-district. Semi-structured questionnaires were used as an interview instrument with a purposive sample of 20 social workers. In light of the findings derived from the literature study and empirical research, appropriate conclusions and related recommendations were made. The main conclusion for this study is that various factors, such as the caseload of social workers and involvement of significant others during intervention, influence participants’ ability to utilise case work effectively during intervention with aggressive adolescents. The main recommendation of this study is that the delivery of social services be prioritized to avoid social work tasks or situations hindering or prohibiting intervention with aggressive adolescents. Semi-gestruktureerde vraelyste is as ‘n onderhoudskedule benut.

Special education: The status of special education services in Indian band-operated schools in Manitoba.

Phillips, Ronald Sydney. January 1994 (has links)
For many years Indian students requiring special education services were sent to provincial schools where services were provided. In 1985, the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) began providing funds to Indian band-operated schools for support of special education services. During the past nine years, parents, teachers, and administrators of band-operated schools have expressed concerned about the lack of and the quality of special education services in band-operated schools. There is an absence of information regarding the provision of special education services in band-operated schools in Manitoba. The purpose of this study is to describe the status of special education in these schools. The methodology of this study included surveys and in-depth interviews with principals of six band-operated schools in Manitoba. Two schools were randomly selected from each of three student enrollment categories (1200-750; 650-300; and 150-50). The major findings of this study confirm the concerns of parents, teachers, and administrators that the special education delivery system is not meeting the needs of disabled Indian students. Reasons for the lack of comprehensive services included: inefficient administrative structure; insufficient numbers of trained personnel; inconsistency of programs and services; absence of operating procedures; and lack of parent and community involvement. Eight activities are recommended for improving the quantity and quality of special education services to Canadian Indian children. First, planning committees need to be established at the band-operated school and tribal council level to develop cooperative plans for providing special education services to meet existing needs. Second, an Indian controlled special education organization should be developed consisting of band-operated schools, tribal councils, and a provincial agency. Such an organization can develop, support, and monitor special education activities. Third, the kinds and numbers of special education personnel must be increased. Fourth, there is a need to develop special education programs and services. Fifth, policies for efficient and effective operating procedures need to be written. Sixth, all students needing special education services should be identified and served. Seventh, parent and community involvement with band-operated schools must be encouraged. Eighth, additional research is needed in other Indian band-operated schools and reserves before these findings can be generalized.
