This is an inquiry into human personal space at a basic descriptive level. Its purpose is to observe some of the characteristics of personal space configurations as measured by a projective technique and to see how certain conditions may effect them.

In this thesis a study is made of the space X of all step functions on [0,1]. This investigation includes determining a completion space, X*, for the incomplete space X, defining integration for X*, and proving some theorems about integration in X*.

The purpose of this thesis is to study in depth the relationship between the curvature of space-time and the other geometrical objects which naturally arise in general relativity. Most of the results obtained apply to the generic case. Chapter 1 contains a discussion of certain aspects of fibre bundle theory required in later chapters which may be unfamiliar to many relativists, while chapter 2 contains preliminary material on curvature in relativity and proves a continuity property of the algebraic classification of the Weyl and energy-momentum tensors. Chapter 3 describes the generic behaviour of the Riemann, Weyl and energy-momentum tensors, and chapter 5 goes on to use this description to investigate the relationship of the Riemann tensor to the metric, conformal class and connection of space-time in the generic case. In particular it is proved that the Riemann tensor uniquely and continuously determines the connections. The information obtained in chapter 3 on the algebraic type of curvature in the general case is related in chapter 4 to the topology of the underlying manifold. In chapter 6 a topology is defined on the set of sectional curvatures of all Lorentz metrics on a given manifold. The remainder of the chapter attempts to do for the sectional curvature what was done for the Riemann tensor in chapter 5 but, because sectional curvature is more difficult to handle, the results obtained are necessarily more modest.

A proposta deste trabalho é analisar a representação dos espaços marginais presentes nas crônicas dos jornalistas João do Rio e Ernesto Lara Filho. Espaços estes, físicos e literários, por onde circulam personagens de hábitos e identidades peculiares, figuras presentes no desenvolvimento real e simbólico da história social e política do Brasil na virada do século XIX e de Angola pré-independência.Por meio do gênero híbrido da crônica estes autores percorrem os caminhos tortos de suas sociedades, ambas formadas em contextos explícitos de desigualdade humana e social, heranças de uma mesma colonização, que se cruzam através do exercício de uma literatura marginal realizado por escritores que gozavam a realidade ao mesmo tempo em que criticavam ferozmente a ilusão de modernidade e progresso de suas épocas. / This paper proposal is to analyze the representation of side spaces in the chronicles of journalists Joao do Rio and Ernesto Lara Filho. They are physical and literary spaces, where characters of peculiar habits and identities live. These ones figures on the real and symbolic development of Brazilian social and political history in the turn of XIX century and also in pre independence of Angola. By means of hybrid kinds of chronicle these authors cover the tortuous ways of their societies, both of them raised from explicit contexts of social and human discrimination, inheritances of the same colonization, that crosses through the exercise of a felonious literature carried by writers who enjoyed the reality at the same time they fiercely (strongly) criticized the modernity and progress illusion of their time.

Este estudo visa o reconhecimento do valor artístico dos mosaicos e da importância do espaço onde estão inseridos. Para isso foram enfocadas as questões do ver mosaicos, que implica seu entendimento como objetos compostos de diversas partes, e do fazer mosaicos, que abrange as questões técnicas de projeto e execução. O espaço é apresentado como elemento essencial na hora de ver mosaicos, visto que os mosaicos transformam o espaço e, também, no sentido contrário, o espaço transforma o mosaico. Na questão de fazer mosaicos, na fase do projeto, exige-se um estudo do espaço em que ele será aplicado. Este trabalho inclui uma amostra de mosaicos de pastilha de vidro em seu espaço na cidade e em edifícios com fotos e ilustrações, visando transportar o leitor para esses espaços, e para os pontos de vista de um mosaicista e de um artista plástico, que projeta murais para espaços públicos. / This study aims at the recognition of the artistic value of mosaics and of the importance of the space into which they are introduced. To achieve this purpose, focus is directed at issues relating to the seeing of mosaics - which implies their being understood as objects composed of diverse parts - and of the making mosaics, which involves technical questions having to do with project and execution. The space is presented as an essential element at the moment in which the mosaic is seen - once the mosaic transforms the space - as well as, in the contrary sense, the space transforms the mosaic. The problem of making mosaics in the project phase demands a study of the space in which it will be applied. This work includes a sample of glass tile mosaics in their space in the city and building, with photos and illustrations, aiming transporting the reader into these spaces, and into the point of view not only of the mosaicist, but also of the plastic artist, who projects murals onto public spaces.
