Total Stress Load Inventory: A Validation Study

Sherck-O'Connor, Robin 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to validate a stress inventory which would differentiate between a normative group and a patient population suffering from environmental illness. The hypotheses of this study were: (1) the Total Stress Load Inventory would be predictive in discriminating between clinical ecology patients and a normative group; (2) each section or subscale of the Total Stress Load Inventory would be predictive of psychological, cognitive, nutritional, and/or medical factors.

Modelling the impact of total stress changes on groundwater flow

Dissanayake, Nalinda 29 April 2008
The research study involved using the modified FEMWATER code to investigate the impact of total stress changes on groundwater flow in the vicinity of a salt tailings pile. Total stress and pore-pressure data observed at the Lanigan and Rocanville potash-mine sites were used to assist the development of a generic FEMWATER model. The original 3-D mesh considered for model study covers a region of 7.6 km x 7.6 km x 60 m. The simulated pile itself covers a surface area of 1.6 km x 1.6 km within the region. Symmetry of the idealized system allowed half of the system to be modelled to reduce the size of the mesh. The model was layered to facilitate different materials representing different hydrostratigraphic scenarios. The GMS-release of the FEMWATER code (version 2.1) was modified to simulate the pore-pressure response to total stress changes caused by tailings pile loading at the ground surface to be modelled. The modified code was verified before applying to present study.<p>Long-term pore pressure generation and dissipation due to pile construction was investigated for eleven hydrostratigraphic scenarios consisting of plastic clays, stiff till and dense sand layers commonly found in Saskatchewan potash mining regions. The model was run for two distinctive pile loading patterns. Model results indicated that the loading pattern has a significant influence on pore pressure generation beneath the pile. The model was initially run for 30 year pile construction period and later simulated for 15, 25 and 35 year construction periods to investigate the impact of loading rate. These results showed that, as expected, the peak pore water pressure head is proportional to the pile construction rate. A sensitivity analysis, which was carried out by changing hydraulic conductivity of stiff till, revealed that the lower the hydraulic conductivity, the greater the pore pressure generation beneath the pile.<p>Overall, the research study helped to understand and predict the influence of pile construction and hydrostratigraphy on pore-pressure changes beneath salt tailing piles. Low K/Ss or cv materials (compressible tills) demonstrate a slow dissipation rate and high excess pressures. Compared to dense sand which has very high K/Ss, till has very low K/Ss which causes in high excess pore pressure generation. Sand layers act as drains, rapidly dissipating pore pressures. Thicker low K/Ss units result in slower dissipation and higher pressures. As the thickness of the low K/Ss layer increases, the peak pressures increase as the drainage path lengthens. Thin plastic clay layers give rise to the highest pressures.<p>The model study showed that hydrostratigraphic scenarios similar to those found at Saskatchewan potash mine sites can generate the high pore pressures observed in the vicinity of salt tailings piles as a result of pile loading. Peak pressures are very sensitive to pile construction rates, loading patterns and hydrostratiagraphy of the region. Peak pressures can reach levels that would be of concern for pile stability on the presence of adverse geological conditions.

Donato, Maciel January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this work is to study the polypropylene fiber-reinforced sand stress distribution through circular plate load tests, with direct stress measurement using total stress cells. The influence of fiber inclusion in load-settlement behavior of thick compacted soil layers was investigated and the fiber content effect evaluated. Laboratory calibrations were carried out in order to evaluate the factors that affect the stress measurements in total stress cells inserted in the soil. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was applied to simulate the numerical stress distribution inside the calibration chambers. Plate load tests with 0.30 m diameter plate bearing on compacted sand reinforced and non-reinforced layers were carried out to investigate the load-settlement behavior, failure mechanisms and stress distributions inside the sand layers and in the soil/plate contact. The analysis of the results shows that the vertical stress distribution inside the calibration chambers is a function of the high/diameter relationship and the calibration constants are a function of the stress cells installation position. It can be observed that the sand load-settlement behavior is significantly influenced by fiber inclusion, increasing bearing capacity and changing failure mechanisms. The stress measurements indicate an alteration in the stress distribution with the fiber inclusion.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DA SEGURANÇA DE UM QUEBRA-MAR SOBRE ARGILA MOLE / [en] SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF A BREAKWATER ON SOFT CLAY

ANA LUIZA ROSSINI VALENTE DE OLIVEIRA 12 September 2019 (has links)
[en] This work aims at applying available methods of probabilistic analysis for assessing the stability of a breakwater built on soft clay at the Sergipe Terminal, gathering information on the existent materials in the field and a statistical analysis of the geotechnical parameters, emphasizing the inherent variability as part of the research. Three probabilistic techniques of analysis have been used: FOSM, Point Estimates and Monte Carlo Simulation. The hypotheses, calculation steps and basic concepts of reliability index and probability of failure are presented, with brief discussions on the different limit equilibrium procedures used for polygonal surfaces. Three scenarios were studied, regarding the soft clay parameters: total stress analysis, considering undrained loading, effective stress analysis with effective friction angle from triaxial tests, and effective stress analysis with effective friction angle from back analysis of a previous failure. For the three scenarios, the probability of failure values were, respectively around: 1/70, 1/2100 and 1/30. Besides this, when using the FOSM and Point Estimates probabilistic techniques, the results proved to be more conservative, in comparison to Monte Carlo Simulation.

[en] This work aims the results of the application of probabilistic analyzes in the evaluation of slope stability, based on the case of the rupture of a tailings dam that colapse in January 2019. A statistical analysis of the geotechnical characteristics of the materials present in the work was carried out, emphasizing the inherent variability of the data. In the probabilistic analyzes, the FOSM method was adopted. The basic concepts of reliability and probability of rupture and the hypotheses and calculation steps considered in each method are presented. The different limit equilibrium methods used for circular rupture surfaces are briefly discussed. Two scenarios were studied in relation to the adopted procedures: total stress analysis, with the resistance of soft clay obtained by field and laboratory tests; effective stress analysis with the angle of friction of the clay from field and laboratory tests. It was observed that for the two scenarios the values of probability of rupture were, respectively, in the order of 1/3,5 e 1/312,5.
