This practice area has been comprehended from the analysis of the context which originated the Social Service insertion in the Environmental Health Surveillance in the city of São Paulo and sought to identify institutional demands in the socio-occupational area of environmental health. The conceptions regarding environmental health were systematized for an analysis regarding surveillance in environmental health as an occupational area of the social assistant and characterized the social conditions which demand professional intervention. In order to clarify the object, bibliographical and documental research were used, the analytical path carried out has demonstrated, firstly, the concrete reality of the center of São Paulo, followed by an emphasis on healthy politics in Brazil materialized by SUS and by environmental health surveillance inserted in this context. Afterwards, the relationship between social service and health has been presented in the scope of environmental health, reflecting about the professional intervention possibilities guided through reality comprehension and the sociohistorical meaning of social service. As results, the possibilities of professional intervention of social service in the socio-occupational area of environmental health surveillance, especially in management are assimilated, from the knowledge provided by the territory research, as well as SUS related guidelines, in contemporaneity, with surveillance, considering the tensions and the urban matter demonstrations as a dimension of the social matter / A proposta desta dissertação, embasada em uma perspectiva crítica, teve por finalidade desvelar a relação entre o Serviço Social e a saúde ambiental em face da questão urbana. Compreendeu este espaço de atuação profissional a partir de análise do contexto que deu origem à inserção do Serviço Social na Vigilância em Saúde Ambiental na cidade de São Paulo e buscou identificar demandas institucionais no espaço sócio-ocupacional da saúde ambiental. Sistematizou as concepções sobre saúde ambiental para análise sobre vigilância em saúde ambiental como espaço ocupacional do/a assistente social e caracterizou as situações sociais que demandam a intervenção profissional. Para elucidar o objeto foi utilizada pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. O percurso analítico realizado demonstrou primeiramente a realidade concreta do Centro da cidade de São Paulo, seguida de ênfase à política de saúde no Brasil materializada pelo SUS e pela Vigilância em Saúde Ambiental inserida nesse contexto. Posteriormente apresentou a relação entre Serviço Social e saúde no âmbito da saúde ambiental, com reflexões sobre as possibilidades de intervenção profissional pautadas na compreensão da realidade e do significado sóciohistórico do Serviço Social. Como resultados, apreenderam-se as possibilidades de intervenção profissional do Serviço Social no espaço socio-ocupacional da Vigilância em Saúde ambiental, sobretudo no âmbito das atividades de gestão, a partir do conhecimento proporcionado pela pesquisa sobre o território, bem como as diretrizes do SUS relacionadas, na contemporaneidade, com a Vigilância, considerando as tensões e as manifestações da questão urbana como dimensão da questão social
