________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Objective: To investigate the influence of carbohydrate intake and the education level on myopia prevalence in children at the indigenous village of Jaguapirú in Dourados town. Methods: A cross-sectional study, which evaluated, in each subject, the type of refractive error, the body mass index and the carbohydrate intake by a 24-hour food- survey. Results: Myopia was found in 34% of 235 children (mean 10.74 years old) who underwent refraction examination. The average carbohydrate intake was 34.84%. There was a positive correlation between education and myopia. Conclusion: The carbohydrate intake did not affect directly the onset of myopia, but some influence of the growth factor might be related to the refractive error. It was also found that myopia was present in the group who attended a greater number of series, although we have not measured the hours dedicated to reading, suggesting that reading activities in these children may interfere with the myopia prevalence.
