《西遊記》續書在明末清初和清末民初兩個時期，都有多本續書出版，成為明清小說中獨樹一幟的現象。從《西遊記》出版後至明末清初數十年間有《續西遊記》、《後西遊記》及《西遊補》三書，而清末民初則是在1902年「小說界革命」口號提出後，陸續有許多以「西遊記」命名並續寫的小說。本論文希望藉由主題學與敘事學的方法，將《西遊記》續書對《西遊記》主題的轉變、小說中敘事視野受到西方小說筆法的影響、人物形象面對不同時代所產生的不同特色，以及小說中的物質，是如何受到時代的影響，而產生完全不同的展演模式，藉此來探看世風轉變之際，《西遊記》續書是以何種方式，轉化《西遊記》中的主題、、人物，乃至對器物的描寫，將《西遊記》續書於明末清初與清末民初的轉變並置，重新看待此二時期續書的價值。
