明代中期羅欽順、王廷相、吳廷翰的哲學型態為自然氣本論，此一哲學強調「理在氣中」、「理在事中」、「理在情中」。日用倫常中的規則即是天理流行的結果。但此一型態的哲學並不能視為是他律的道德哲學，因為 他們的工夫實踐仍是要合內外之道的。他們要將內在的道德良知﹝此良知是有限度的道德直覺，是屬於弱性的良知﹞與外在的聖人禮教，在兩者相互的權衡中來實踐。明清的自然氣本論者是主張「人性向善論」的，而此一性善論與孟子的「人性本善論」是有差異的。羅、王、吳可說是自然氣本論哲學的發端，而此哲學型態最成熟、典型的代表人物即是戴震。因此戴震這類型的哲學出現，並非是突然的，他仍然可在明清哲學的脈絡中來看出其端倪的。
