Loss to follow-up among participants in the real talk study: a brief motivational interview intervention to reduce teen dating violence perpetration in Boston

Velasquez, Gabriela Elizabeth 20 June 2016 (has links)
Loss to follow-up (LTF) is an important issue that can affect the validity of longitudinal studies. Further, LTF among adolescent study participants may be predicted by variables such as substance use, educational attainment, and demographic information. The purpose of this study was to determine if alcohol or marijuana use, high school completion, or demographic information was correlated with LTF among adolescent participants in the Real Talk Study. The Real Talk study is a randomized control trial that employs a brief motivational interview intervention in a clinical setting to reduce perpetration of teen dating violence (TDV) in Boston. Current participants of the Real Talk study who were eligible for follow up comprised the study sample (N=127). Baseline characteristics on age, gender, race/ethnicity, high school completion, alcohol use, and marijuana use were analyzed using Pearson’s Chi Square, and the level of significance set to p < 0.10. A post-hoc analysis was conducted on frequency of alcohol use using Pearson’s Chi Square. Of the total sample, 13% were LTF (n=17). The results of the analyses indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between those LTF and those retained for gender and drinking 6 or more drinks of alcohol per occasion. Females were more likely to be LTF than males (p<0.10), and those participants who responded “never” or “less than monthly” to the question, “how many times do you drink 6 or more drinks per occasion?” were more likely to be retained, or less likely to be LTF (p<0.10) than those who responded differently. While some of the results were consistent with the literature, it is also possible that the follow-up procedure for Real Talk ensured that there were minimal differences in LTF.

Pacientes com Líquen Plano Oral : estresse, enfrentamento e eficácia adaptativa /

Justi, Mirella Martins. January 2009 (has links)
Studies demonstrate that this disease is aggravated according to the patients' conditions of stress, tension and emotional disturbance. Present researches on stress and its relation with the condition of falling sick, mainly in the field of psychoimmunology, have emphasized that such relations are dependent of personality aspects or ways of being of different individuals, which figure several ways of confrontation of the stressful events, maintaining or not the stress immunodepressive effects and increasing or not its pathogenic potential. Considering such registers, it is possible to relate OLP to stress - present in the modern life and, more and more, indicated as the main triggering element of "adaptation diseases". Confrontation must also be related to the disease, because it figures in the way as the individual adaptation process occurs face to the requirements of the modern life. The general purpose of this paper is to accomplish a longitudinal study of 10 patients with OLP diagnosis who took part in a group brief psychotherapy and had a continuous attendance controlling the size of the OLP lesions in 2003, investigating their health conditions, OLP lesions occurrences, sress events, confrontation and adaptative efficacy from 2003 to 2008. For the procedure of data gathering, the following items were used: two interviews (EDAO-R; Stress Interview, Confrontation and Health - specially elaborated for this study), present OLP measurements and anterior evaluation registers accomplished in 2003, which consisted in the accomplishment of BPO (Brief Pssychotherapy Operacionalized), EDAO-R application and OLP... The effect of Satir brief therapy on patients in a maternity hospital

Cohen, Bertha 31 December 2006 (has links)
As no known research has been done on Satir brief therapy in a maternity setting, an exploratory design using the case study method was used to assess whether women in a maternity hospital experience this form of therapy as beneficial. Purposive sampling was used to obtain a sample of five patients for this study. Therapeutic sessions were held with these women during their stay in hospital, and follow up sessions with four of the five women were held once they had been discharged home to evaluate their experience of the therapy. The fifth woman could not be reached after her discharge from hospital. The results indicate that the use of Satir brief therapy supports the research question and that it can therefore be used to address the psychological and social issues which can affect the mother baby dyad, thus promoting healthy mother - baby bonding. / Social Work / M.A.(Social Science)

Mantelli, Mathias Fassini January 2017 (has links)
New models of Unnamed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are developed on a daily basis and applied to several tasks, such as mapping terrains and surveillance. GPS sensors are usually the main source of information to estimate the robot position, however, a downside of these sensors is that a minimum number of satellites must be available and emitting high quality signals. A vision-based system can be used to overcome this problem by using a robot embedded camera and satellite images as maps. Computational vision systems estimate the UAV localization through the comparison between the robot extracted image and several parts of the satellite image. These comparisons are performed in order to localize the part of the map which is most similar to the robot perspective. Taking into account all this information, we propose BRIEF descriptor variation, called abBRIEF, to be used on a novel observation model, also proposed in this master thesis. An observation model is responsible for evaluate how similar the robot measurements and the different map parts are. The used descriptor must run fast, consume low computational resources and be robust regarding image changes, all to compensate the large number of necessary comparisons. The proposed model is applied with Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) method to the auto localization of UAVs and presented solid results that corroborate the model and descriptor efficiency.

Childhood obesity has grown exponentially. In this context, the family plays an indispensable role in the construction of healthy habits, and when associated with Education and Health, this process becomes complete and more effective. Brief advice seems to be a good strategy to strengthen such ties in order to work together and improve children's habits. Objective: To verify the effects of a BA intervention, addressing the spheres of physical activity and healthy diet to the family on the child, with support from public schools and the Family Health Unit (USF). Methods: Participated in the study 14 parents/guardians and 38 children between 6 and 10 years of EF-I were enrolled in the 2 municipal public schools drawn in the city of the interior of São Paulo, with close to 2 USFs that assisted in the collections. The children performed monthly anthropometric assessments and answered the questionnaire in three moments. Parents received BA during the 6-month period, answered questionnaires every 2 months. And teachers and ACS answered questionnaire in the pre and post moments. For statistical data, mean, standard deviation and percentage were used, ANOVA for repeated measurements and chi-square test with intention to treat. The analyzes were conducted using software SPSS version 21.0 and Excel 2013, with a value of p≤0.05. Content analysis was also performed for qualitative data. Results: Children reached the 60-minute guidelines for moderate to vigorous activities (140,76±114,91; 138,10±114,17; 111,60±121,67), however the time spent in sedentary behavior increased among the collections (103,57±136,98; 152,28± 277,38; 185,18±173,99). The parents did not reach the recommendations of 150 minutes of AF at leisure per week in collections 2 and 3 (174,28±207,13; 135,00±190,53; 138,57±194,25), and also showed high levels of sedentary behavior. Regarding healthy eating, the results indicate that there is a concern with it, however, a high intake of ultra-processed foods is observed. The qualitative part showed that there is a search for change in relation to physical activity and healthy eating, thus improving the quality of life of parents and consequently of children. In the partnership between Education and Health there were difficulties, but an effectiveness was observed in the moments in which they participated. Conclusion: The quantitative data point out the fundamental role that the family and school play in the child, and it is reinforced from the qualitative data. The difficulty in the communication between Education and Health was found, but in the moments of participation they demonstrated to be important and effective. Thus, there are indications that the BA to the family on the child, with support from public schools and USF, appear to be effective.
