The influence of non-health factors on quality of life / The influence of non-health factors on life qualityBeňačka, Adam January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this master thesis is to analyze the influence of non-health factors on quality of life in member countries of the European Union. For the analysis, economic and developmental variables were used. The master thesis begins with analysis of life expectancy in the world due to quality of life directly affecting life expectancy. The next part is devoted to the analysis of the influence of GDP on quality of life and correlation between single dimensions of the Human Development Index. The Health index, Inequality-adjusted income index, Expenditure on public health and GNI per capita PPP were analyzed in order to illustrate their influence and importance in provision of quality of life. Unemployment of the age group 55+ and out-of-pocket spending were analyzed to demonstrate their influence on quality of life and life expectancy. Pension systems and retirement age were analyzed with connection to ageing of the population and fiscal problems arising from decreased fertility. Gender inequality is analyzed, drawing adverse consequences of a more equitable, but not a long-term oriented society. As a result of this master thesis, the conclusion was drawn in form of a Quality of life dilemma diagram. The diagram consists of all the variables analyzed in the master thesis displaying positive, negative and likely positive relationships between variables and quality of life. In the conclusion, the problem of sustainability of public finances, welfare state and competitiveness caused by longevity and low fertility affecting future quality of life in the European countries is summed up. The finding of this thesis is that quality of life is a very complex issue and in order to achieve a sustainable quality of life, all the variables have to be wisely governed. Short-term unbalanced improvements in quality of life will very likely retaliate in terms of deterioration of other variables in the future, pulling quality of life down.

Characterization of Hpk2-Rrp2, two-component regulatory system in Treponema denticolaJuni, Sarkar 16 September 2011 (has links)
Treponema denticola levels in the gingival crevice become elevated as periodontal disease develops. Oral treponemes may account for as much as 40% of the total bacterial population in the periodontal pocket. The stimuli that trigger enhanced growth of T. denticola and the mechanisms associated with the transmission of these signals remain to be defined. A hypothesis was set that the T. denticola ORFs tde1970 (histidine kinase) and tde1969 (response regulator) constitute a functional two component regulatory system that regulates, at least in part, responses to the changing environmental conditions associated with the development of periodontal disease. The results presented demonstrate that tde1970 and tde1969 are conserved, universal among T. denticola isolates and transcribed as part of a 7 gene operon in a growth phase dependent manner. Tde1970 undergoes autophosphorylation and transfers phosphate to Tde1969. Henceforth the proteins encoded by these ORFs are designated as Hpk2 and Rrp2 respectively. Hpk2 autophosphorylation kinetics was influenced by environmental conditions and by the presence or absence of a Per Arnt Sim (PAS) domain. It can be concluded that Hpk2 and Rrp2 constitute a functional two-component system that contributes to environmental sensing. This study also sought to determine the molecular basis of Hpk2 function in response to environmental stimuli. Hpk2 was shown to bind hemin via a putative heme-binding domain within the PAS domain. Hemin binding to Hpk2 positively regulated its autokinase ability under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that Hpk2 activation may play a role in the migration of T. denticola away from the aerobic zone deeper into developing periodontal pockets. In this study we have generated point mutations of conserved amino acid residues in the sensor PAS domain of Hpk2 and assessed their role in kinase activation under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions depending on their oligomeric state, hence providing a strong basis to correlate ligand binding, kinase activity and oligomeric states of the protein that may provide stability of these complex interactions. Ultimately this study provides a comparative linkage between the responses of PAS domain to sensory inputs controlling access to its kinase domain within which is contained the dimerization domain, which ultimately leads to fine-tuned control of interactions between Hpk2 dimerization and catalytic domain.

Life Experiences and Resilience in College Students: A Relationship Influenced by Hope and MindfulnessCollins, Amy B. 16 January 2010 (has links)
This study examines the effects of hope and mindfulness on the relationship between life experiences and resilience, as well as the direct relationships among these constructs. Participants were 537 undergraduates who were taking online courses at Texas A&M University. Most participants were traditionally-aged and female. Quantitative self-report measures for each construct were administered online via SurveyMonkey.
The small, positive relationship between life events and resilience approached, but did not reach, statistical significance, and hope but not mindfulness was found to moderate this relationship. Correlations were significant, positive, and linear between resilience and hope (r = .57, p < .01), resilience and mindfulness (r = .50, p less than .01), and hope and mindfulness (r = .44, p less than .01). Suggestions for clinical interventions aimed at increasing resilience by increasing hope and mindfulness are provided

Strategies for the development of Kaohsiung County¡¦s cultural life circles studyHuang, Chiung-Ying 26 July 2001 (has links)
That study is based on three main factors, including Kaohsiung County¡¦s geographic features, its historical evolution, and the background of its cultural resources. In this study, the cultural life of Kaohsiung County is divided into three major circles ¡X the Fengshan Circle, the Gangshan Circle, and the Chishan Circle, which contains two other special circles¡Xthe Hakka Circle and the Aboriginal Circle. A survey was conducted to thoroughly understand the abundance of daily cultural life resources and the future continuous development of the existing cultural resources within the circles. Based on the information gathered, strategies for the development of Kaohsiung County¡¦s cultural life circles have been formulated.

The Effects of the Life Education Program on the Life Attitudes of Alternative School StudentsHuang, Yuan-ting 23 July 2009 (has links)
The main goal of this research is to understand the effects of life education courses on the life attitudes of the students in the alternative school via deep interview and implementing the purpose in the life attitudes test.
This research examines the same group before and after teaching, and focuses on 47 students in the southern alternative school to implement the 4-unit, 12 lessons life education courses. In the part of quantitative research, survey of the life attitudes of the students in the life attitudes test are used as the commenting materials. The information received is allotted and calculated according to the frequency and statistically analyzed according to paired t test. In the part of qualitative research, the researcher determined to select 6 students as the interviewees, and conduct the interviews of semi-structure to proceed deep interviews with the assistance of ¡§word-for-word interview draft¡¨, ¡§interview analysis records¡¨, ¡§activity sheets¡¨, and the ¡§feedback sheets of the whole courses¡¨ to comment on the effects of the life education courses on the life attitudes of alternative school students.
The outcomes of the research are as follows:
1. The life attitudes of the students in the alternative school are measured that tends to be medium, and forward.
2. The life education to the alternative school students ¡§the death attitudes¡¨ the part has in the life attitudes meter forward affects immediate effects, and continuous effects sustainable all around in four weeks ago. There is the interview analysis result's change : to change of the death subject view ¡] avoidance, traditional taboo ¡÷ to confront, attempt to forget¡^, change to self-inflicted injury, the suicide attitudes¡]to attempt, commits suicide ¡÷ no more, try hard for the goal¡^.
3. Although the life education does not have the immediate effects on the ¡§love and caring¡¨ of the chart of the life attitudes of the students in the alternative school, it has the delayed effects: the change of interview analysis outcome is improve the relationship between parents and children ¡]estrangement ¡÷ identification¡^, change of the significant others¡¦ relations¡]besides friends and parents ¡÷ increased teachers¡^.
4. On the overall life attitudes didn¡¦t have immediate or delayed effects, the main teaching results appearance in ¡§the death attitudes¡¨ and ¡§love and caring¡¨.
According to the above-mentioned research, we propose concrete suggestions of the alternative school, the midway education and students that dropout from school, the impetus life education implements, to domestic relative researches and practice workers as the reference.
